The Mumbai Fire Brigade has served notices to 17 of 68 malls over the past one week after carrying out surprise inspections last month, a civic official said on Monday. A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation release said 48 of the 68 malls were found to be following fire safety norms during inspections held between May 26 and 30, while 17 malls have got notices for not adhering to these stipulations. The malls were inspected on the order of BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani following the massive fire in TRP Game Zone in Rajkot in neighbouring Gujarat on May 25, which resulted in the death of 28 persons, including children. "The 17 malls have been issued notices under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Protection Measures Act 2006. They have been given 30 days to rectify the identified deficiencies failing which they will face further action," it said. A day after a 63-hour mega block, Mumbaikars on Monday continued to bear the brunt of delayed local train services on the Central Railway, with the authorities attributing the disruptions to the new signalling system. The Central Railway undertook a 36-hour mega block over the weekend along with a 63-hour block for widening platforms at Thane station between Friday and Sunday. "A new signalling system has been installed at CSMT, featuring Electronic Interlocking (EI). The system is currently stabilising. Many problems can only be identified after the actual movement of trains. The technical teams are on the job and addressing these issues," Central Railway said in a post on "X". The Central Railway claimed trains were running late by 25 to 30 minutes. A 57-year-old man was injured while 25 to 30 persons were rescued after a fire broke out in a 62-storey residential building in south Mumbai's Byculla area around midnight, officials said on Sunday. The blaze erupted in a flat on the 10th floor of the Monte South building's A wing in the Khatao Mill Compound in Byculla at 11.42 pm on Saturday, a fire official said, adding smoke filled the entire floor. Some persons were stranded on the upper floors of the building, he said. The official said 25 to 30 persons were rescued through the staircase. Amid the 63-hour mega block on the Central Railway, the work is in progress for widening two platforms at Thane station and extending two at CSMT, but the restrictions hit services of local trains on the second day on Saturday, inconveniencing passengers. Officers and supervisors are among 350 labourers who are working round-the-clock to ensure timely completion of the widening of platform numbers 5 and 6 at Thane station, one of the busiest ones on the Mumbai local train network. "Cementing of the platform wall gap is nearing completion," the Central Railway said in a statement. The mega block for the widening of platform numbers 5 and 6 at Thane station started from Thursday midnight, while a 36-hour block is operated for the works related to the extension of platform nos 10 and 11 at CSMT to accommodate 24-coach trains. The Navi Mumbai police have arrested four members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang for allegedly plotting to attack actor Salman Khan, a development coming in the wake of the recent firing outside his Bandra home, a senior police official said on Saturday. The Navi Mumbai launched a probe last month after they received a tip about a conspiracy to target the actor at his farmhouse in the Panvel area, the official said. The police said the four were in touch with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, and his younger brother Anmol Bishnoi and had recced the farmhouse and places where Salman Khan worked at the behest of the Bishnoi brothers. The Navi Mumbai named 17 persons, including Lawrence Bishnoi and Anmol Bishnoi, in its FIR. The four arrested persons have been identified as Dhananjay Tapesingh, alias Ajay Kashyap, Gaurav Bhatia, alias Nahvi, Vaspi Khan, alias Waseem Chikna and Rizwan Khan, alias Javed Khan. They have been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including 120-B .
Registration of properties in Mumbai municipal region increased 22 per cent during May to 12,000 units driven by strong housing demand, according to real estate consultant Knight Frank. Citing Maharashtra government data, Knight Frank India said Mumbai city (area under BMC jurisdiction) recorded around 12,000 property registrations last month as against 9,823 units in May last year. State exchequer garnered Rs 1,034 crore in May 2024, up 24 per cent from the same month last year. Of the overall registered properties in May 2024, residential units constituted 80 per cent. A special court in Mumbai on Thursday sentenced gangster Chhota Rajan to life imprisonment in the case of murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty here in 2001. Special judge for cases under the Maharashtra Control Of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), AM Patil, held Rajan guilty under the Indian Penal Code provisions for murder. Jaya Shetty owned the Golden Crown Hotel at Gamdevi in central Mumbai. Shetty was shot dead by two alleged members of Rajan's gang on the hotel's first floor on May 4, 2001. The court's detailed order was not yet available. Police had registered the murder case based on a complaint filed by the hotel manager. A probe into the case indicated Shetty had received extortion calls from Hemant Pujari, a member of the Chhota Rajan gang, and was killed because of his failure to pay the money. The Western Railway has cancelled or rescheduled several trains following the derailment of a goods train at Palghar railway station in Maharashtra and the restoration work is on more than 15 hours after the incident, officials said on Wednesday. Seven wagons of the goods train derailed at Palghar, located around 100 km from Mumbai, at 5.08 pm on Tuesday, affecting the traffic of Mumbai-bound trains coming from Gujarat, a railway spokesperson earlier said here. No casualties were reported. The goods train with 43 wagons and carrying iron coils was heading to Karambeli in Gujarat from Visakhapatnam. As per railway sources, seven wagons including the guard's van from the rear end derailed, and some of them fell on their sides with iron coils thrown off over the tracks. A Mumbai court on Sunday extended till May 29 the police custody of Bhavesh Bhinde, director of the advertising firm which had installed a hoarding that collapsed in Ghatkopar area here and claimed 17 lives. M/S Ego Media Pvt Ltd, the advertising firm of Bhinde, managed the giant hoarding that collapsed on a petrol pump during a dust storm and rains on May 13. As Bhinde absconded after the incident, police registered a case against him on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code. He was arrested in Udaipur, Rajasthan, on May 16 and brought to the city. Bhinde was subsequently remanded in police custody till May 26. On Sunday, the crime branch, which is probing the case, produced Bhinde before the metropolitan magistrate court at the end of his previous custody. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday said he has directed the authorities to remove illegal hoardings in Mumbai and other parts of the state, and asked them to register cases against those responsible for such tragedies. He also said that he has also directed them to carry out a structural audit of all the hoardings, even if they are installed legally and have proper permission. A 32-year-old man died after his bike collided with a juvenile's bike in south Mumbai on Thursday, police said. The incident came days after the May 19 Pune accident involving a Porsche car driven by a 17-year-old boy in which two people were killed. The man injured in Thursday's accident in Mazgaon area, Irfan Nawab Ali Shaikh, was rushed to J J Hospital but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Police detained the juvenile and transferred him to Dongri Children's Home in Mumbai, an official said. His father has been arrested, the official added.
