Metropolis Healthcare gets Rs 24 cr income tax demand from Mumbai officials

Metropolis Healthcare Ltd on Monday said it has received a Rs 24.46 crore income tax demand from the income tax authority. An income tax demand of Rs 24.46 crore (tax plus interest) has been raised by the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, Income Tax Department (ACIT) for assessment year (AY) 2023-24, Metropolis Healthcare said in a regulatory filing. The actual demand for AY 2023-24 will come to Rs 24.19 crore after adjusting rectification of Rs 27 lakh pertaining to AY 2023-24, it added. For the Rs 27 lakh demand, tax plus interest, for AY 2023-24, the company has brought to the notice of ACIT that an error has occurred during the computation of tax and ACIT has not granted credit for certain taxes already paid by the company. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday laid the foundation of the Metro Line 12 which will connect Kalyan with Taloja in Navi Mumbai, stating it will bring in a new wave of development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The upcoming metro line is an extension of Metro Line-5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) which will play a crucial role in improving the connectivity in MMR and extending the Metro network. Metro Line 12 incorporates a completely elevated structure with 19 stations along the 22.173 km route. The estimated cost of this project, expected to be completed by end-2027, is around Rs 5,865 crore, as per an official release. A Karachi-bound ship from China was stopped by Indian security agencies at Mumbai's Nhava Sheva port on the suspicion that it contained a dual-use consignment that could be used for Pakistan's nuclear and ballistic missiles programme, officials here said on Saturday. The customs officials, based on an intelligence input, halted a Malta-flagged merchant ship -- CMA CGM Attila -- at the port en route to Karachi on January 23 and inspected the consignment, which included a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine, originally manufactured by an Italian company. CNC machines are basically controlled by a computer and produce a scale of efficiency, consistency and accuracy not possible manually. A Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) team also inspected the consignment and certified that it could be used by the neighbouring country for its nuclear programme. Fire breaks out at commercial unit in Mumbai, no casualties reported

A fire broke out at a commercial unit in the western suburb of Sakinaka here on Saturday morning, and there was no casualty in the incident, a fire official said. The blaze occurred around 9.40 am in a single-storey structure near a bus stop on the Andheri-Kurla road, the official said. Three fire engines, jumbo tankers and an ambulance were dispatched to deal with the Level 1 category fire, he said. The fire-fighting operation is underway, the official said. Paper, cloth, electrical wiring and other materials were stored on the premises, he said. The cause for the fire is yet to be ascertained, it was stated.

Former Maha CM Manohar Joshi passes away after suffering cardiac arrest

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Friday, where he was admitted after suffering a cardiac arrest. The former Maharashtra chief minister was admitted in the ICU of P D Hinduja Hospital here on Wednesday and breathed his last at the private medical facility, family sources said. Joshi (86), was severely ill, the hospital had said in a statement on Thursday. The Shiv Sena stalwart was admitted to the same hospital in May last year after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Joshi served as chief minister from 1995 to 1999 and was the first leader from the undivided Shiv Sena to occupy the top post in the state. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament and was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 when the Vajpayee government was in power.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar on Tuesday approved a budget of Rs 4,950 crore for 2024-25, with no hike in taxes and emphasis on public welfare and civic development. Talking to PTI, Narvekar said an inclusive approach was adopted while formulating the budget, and suggestions from citizens were also incorporated. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is expecting Rs 1,626 crore in Goods and Services Tax, Rs 900 crore in property tax, Rs 244 crore in government grants, Rs 104 crore from water cess, and Rs 90 crore by way of registration incomes and permits, among other income, he said. Around 15 commercial units and some houses were damaged in a fire that broke out in a chawl in Mumbai's Govandi area early on Saturday, in which nobody was reported injured, an official said. The fire brigade received a call at 3.55 am, which alerted it about the blaze, he said. "Around 15 galas (commercial units) on the ground floor and some houses on the first floor were damaged in the fire that broke out in a chawl at Bainganwadi in Adarsh Nagar area of Govandi," the fire brigade official said. The fire engulfed some electrical wiring and installations, plastic sheets, household items, wooden planks and furniture, among other things, he said, adding that attempts to douse the flames were underway. Some water tankers along with an ambulance were rushed to the spot. Nobody was found injured and the exact cause of the fire is yet to be known, the official added.
