MP govt to let NDDB operate cooperative dairies for 5 yrs; Cong opposes

The Madhya Pradesh government has given its consent to hand over for the next five years the operations of the Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Dairy Federation and the milk unions affiliated to it to the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). This decision was made during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday here in Bhopal. The opposition Congress, however, resisted the move, claiming that it was Gujarat co-operative dairy Amul's "backdoor" attempts to take over MP's state-run milk brand Sanchi. "During the meeting, it was agreed that the Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Dairy Federation and its associated milk unions will be managed and operated by the NDDB for the next five years. For this, necessary approvals will be obtained and legal action will be taken," an official release said. CM Yadav said that there is a consensus on giving responsibility to the NDDB to increase the income of farmers and cattle keepers by making the state a leader in milk ...

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 2020 had proposed the establishment of fodder-centric FPOs and requested the agriculture ministry to allow such FPOs under the central scheme "Formation and Promotion of 10,000 new FPOs". The proposal was considered seriously and the agriculture ministry finally issued an order on November 4. "The competent authority in the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has approved to designate NDDB as implementing agency under the scheme of formation and promotion of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to form and promote FPOs, primarily fodder centric, and animal husbandry activities as a secondary activity (fodder plus model)," the order said. The size of the Indian dairy market is estimated to jump over two fold to Rs 30 lakh crore by 2027, driven by growth in both volume and value terms, NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah said on Tuesday. He also asserted that the government is not "insensitive" and it will protect the interest of 8 crore dairy farmers while signing free trade agreements (FTAs) with other countries. Shah said the size of Indian dairy market stood at Rs 13 trillion in 2021 and it is expected to reach Rs 30 trillion by 2027. The growth would come from increase in production of milk and other dairy products as well as value appreciation, he added. Shah, the chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), was addressing a press conference at the International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit (IDF WDS) 2022, being organised at the India Expo Centre and Mart here during September 12-15.
