Emilia Prez tops Oscar nominations with 13, Wicked, The Brutalist get 10

In the wake of devastating wildfires in Los Angeles that struck at the heart of the movie industry, an embattled Hollywood lined up behind the Netflix narco-musical about trans identity Emilia Prez in Oscar nominations Thursday. Jacques Audiard's Emilia Prez, a Spanish language, French-made film, dominated the nominations with a leading 13 nominations, including best picture and best actress for Karla Sofa Gascn, making her the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar. The film also landed nominations for directing, original screenplay, two of its songs and for Zoe Saldaa. Netflix, despite its starring role in Hollywood, has never won best picture. Many of its top contenders have previously racked up large numbers of nominations (including Mank, The Irishman and Roma) but gone home with only a handful of trophies. Emilia Prez, though, may be its best chance yet. It became the most nominated non-English language film ever, surpassing Netflix's own Roma, which landed 10 ..

Oscars push back nominations announcement amid California wildfires

The Oscar nominations are being pushed back almost a week from their original date amid the ongoing California wildfires. Nominations will now be announced on January 23, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday. We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a joint statement. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship. With fires still active in the Los Angeles area, the film academy also extended the nominations voting period for its members through Friday. Originally, nominations were to be announced that morning. The organisation that puts on the Oscars has also made the decision to cancel its annual nominees luncheon, an untelevised event best known for the class photos it produces annually. Roger Corman, Hollywood mentor, Oscar-winning 'King of the Bs', dies at 98

Roger Corman, the Oscar-winning King of the Bs who helped turn out such low-budget classics as Little Shop of Horrors and Attack of the Crab Monsters and gave many of Hollywood's most famous actors and directors early breaks, has died. He was 98. Corman died on Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, California, his daughter Catherine Corman said on Saturday in a statement. He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him, the statement said. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, I was a filmmaker, just that.' Starting in 1955, Corman helped create hundreds of films as a producer and director, among them Black Scorpion, Bucket of Blood, and Bloody Mama. A remarkable judge of talent, he hired such aspiring filmmakers as Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, James Cameron and Martin Scorsese. In 2009, Corman received an honorary Academy Award. There are many constraints connected with working on a low budget, but at the same time there are certain ...

Oscars 2024: 'Oppenheimer' wins best picture, Emma Stone takes best actress

Oppenheimer, a solemn three-hour biopic that became an unlikely billion-dollar box-office sensation, was crowned best picture at a 96th Academy Awards that doubled as a coronation for Christopher Nolan. After passing over arguably Hollywood's foremost big-screen auteur for years, the Oscars made up for lost time by heaping seven awards on Nolan's blockbuster biopic, including best actor for Cillian Murphy, best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. and best director for Nolan. In anointing Oppenheimer, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts did something it hasn't done for more than a decade: hand its top prize to a widely seen, big-budget studio film. In a film industry where a cape, dinosaur or Tom Cruise has often been a requirement for such box office, Oppenheimer brought droves of moviegoers to theaters with a complex, fission-filled drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb. For better or worse, we're all living in Robert Oppenheimer's world," said ..

Cillian Murphy bags his first Oscar as best actor for 'Oppenheimer'

Cillian Murphy came away with his first Oscar for portraying the man who created the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer. A first-time nominee, Murphy won best actor for his stellar role as J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film tells the story of how Oppenheimer and his peers at Los Alamos would test the bomb on July 16, 1945, not knowing what was going to happen and the ensuing fallout. Murphy bested Colman Domingo for Rustin, Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction. The Irish actor, though a regular presence in Nolan films going back almost two decades, had always been a supporting player. This time, Nolan wanted him to lead. He's so understated and self-deprecating and, in his very English manner, just said, Listen, I've written this script, it's about Oppenheimer. I'd like you to be my Oppenheimer,' Murphy, 47, told The Associated Press last year. It was a great day. For Murphy, he knows ther

Oscars 2024: Poor Things, Da'Vine Joy Randloph win where Gaza protests rage

An election-year Academy Awards got underway Sunday with protests for Gaza raging outside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, a few cutting remarks from host Jimmy Kimmel and an Oscar for Da'Vine Joy Randolph for her performance in The Holdovers. Kimmel, emceeing the ABC telecast for the fourth time, opened the 96th Academy Awards with an opening monologue that drew a few cold looks (from Robert Downey Jr., Sandra Hller and Messi, the dog from best-picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall). But Kimmel, emphasizing Hollywood as a union town following 2023's actor and writer strikes, drew a standing ovation for bringing out teamsters and behind-the-scenes workers who are now entering their own labor negotiations. Accepting the night's first award, an emotional Randolph was accompanied to the stage by her Holdovers co-star Paul Giamatti. For so long I've always wanted to be different, said Randolph. "And now I realize I just need to be myself." Though Randolph's win was widely expected, an up

Protests over Israel's war in Gaza snarl traffic outside Oscars in LA

Protests over over Israel's war in Gaza snarled traffic around the Academy Awards on Sunday, slowing stars' arrival at the red carpet and turning the Oscar spotlight toward the ongoing conflict. Scattered demonstrations were held in the vicinity around the Oscars on Sunday. Los Angeles police, which had expected protests, beefed up their already extensive presence. The Dolby Theatre and the red carpet leading into it are cordoned off for several blocks in every direction. But protesters carrying signs and chanting for ceasefire disrupted traffic near security checkpoints on Sunset Blvd. Some arrivals were slowed by as much as an hour. Some protesters shouted Shame! at those trying to reach the Oscars. Police in helmets and wielding batons declared an unlawful assembly and threatened arrest. Several attendees, including Billie Eilish and Finneas, best song nominees for What Was I Made For? from Barbie, wore pins for Gaza. Ava DuVernay and Ramy Youssef were also among those wearing ..
