Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest wins Oscar for best international film

The harrowing Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest, which explores questions of complicity while depicting the mundane lives of a Nazi family in their home adjacent to the Auschwitz death camp, won the Academy Award for best international film. Writer-director Jonathan Glazer has found a way to convey evil without ever depicting the horror itself, wrote The Associated Press' Jocelyn Noveck in her review. But though it escapes our eyes, the horror assaults our senses in other, deeper ways. Sandra Hller, nominated for best actress for Anatomy of a Fall, plays Hedwig, the wife of Rudolf Hss (Christian Friedel), the bloodthirsty commandant of Auschwitz. The film was the United Kingdom's submission to the Oscars. Three decades after receiving his first Academy Award nomination, Robert Downey Jr. has won his first Oscar. Downey won best supporting actor on Sunday for his portrayal of Rear Adm. Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer, hailed as one of Downey's best performances in years. It was the third career Oscar nomination for a veteran actor known as one of Hollywood's most versatile performers but before Sunday had never won an Academy Award. How changing Oscars best picture rules will affect contenders, theatres

The theatrical requirements for movies vying for the Oscars top prize are getting a little tougher. Starting with the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, best picture hopefuls will have to spend more time in theatres to qualify for film's top prize. The changes, announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this week, come after three years of adjusted release standards due to the pandemic. On top of the current one week qualifying run in one of six US cities New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco or Miami best picture contenders would now must also now play for an additional seven days in 10 of the top 50 US markets. Glenda Jackson, a two-time Academy Award-winning performer who had a second career in politics as a British lawmaker, has died at 87.
