India and US trade ministers will meet in Washington from May 17 to assess progress on the bilateral trade agreement, provide political direction, and advance talks toward a broader trade pact
India to discuss proposed retaliatory tariffs on US goods during trade talks starting May 17, amid efforts to finalise a broader bilateral trade agreement targeting $500 billion by 2030
The four-day discussions, scheduled from May 17 to 20, will involve key meetings with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will lead a team of senior Indian officials to Washington starting May 16 for discussions with their US counterparts on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA), an official said on Tuesday. Goyal is expected to hold meetings with US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick during his visit. The four-day talks come against the backdrop of both countries exploring the possibility of an interim trade arrangement in goods to secure "early mutual wins" ahead of finalising the first phase of the trade agreement by fall (September-October) this year. Through these discussions, officials from New Delhi and Washington aim to take advantage of the 90-day tariff pause window to advance the talks. The US has suspended the additional 26 per cent tariffs on India till July 9. It was announced on April 2 to bridge the widening trade deficit. However, the 10 per cent baseline tariff imposed on the countrie
India will impose retaliatory duties if the European Union goes ahead with its plan to levy a carbon tax on Indian products, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday. Under the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Indian exports of steel, aluminum, and cement to the EU could face tariffs of 20-35 per cent. He said that gradually the talks about climate is dwindling and termed the CBAM as "very very irrational regulations". The minister asserted that the developed countries should share technologies and and finances to developing and least developing nations to deal with the issues related to climate change. "If they will put in carbon tax, and now there is a big if for obvious reasons. If they do put it in, we will retaliate. They will put it on products which really will hurt their own economy and the retaliation will further hurt their economy," Goyal said here at an function. "I think it will be very silly particularly to put tax on friendly countr

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal says India-EU trade deal to focus on tariff and non-tariff barriers alike, with both sides targeting a meaningful pact by end of 2025
India has emphasised that resolving non-tariff barriers faced by businesses is as important as addressing import duty issues for meaningful progress in talks on the proposed free trade agreement with the European Union (EU), an official statement said on Friday. The progress of the talks was discussed during the meeting between Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic in Brussels. Both leaders also reaffirmed their shared resolve to conclude the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025. "India emphasised that meaningful progress in trade negotiations requires an equal focus on Non-tariff Barriers (NTBs) alongside tariff (import duty) discussions and regulatory frameworks must be inclusive, proportionate, and avoid restricting trade," the commerce ministry said. The country has earlier on multiple occasions flagged NTBs being faced by domestic industry in the European Union markets
Goyal also addressed a gathering, alongside UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds, and spoke about the bright future ahead for the India-UK partnership

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday criticised attempts of certain firms to secure pharmaceutical patents through minor incremental innovations, stating that such practices could deprive millions from access to affordable medicines. Just for the "super-natural" profits of a few companies and their shareholders, the world has to suffer and is deprived of quality and equitable healthcare, he said. "I received requests very often that we should also allow pharmaceutical companies... to have incremental changes to their patents and allow them to have a fresh patent for another long period of time, which we normally understand that as evergreening of patents. "It is so sad that just for the profit of a few companies, just for the supernatural profits of a select few companies and possibly their shareholders, the world has to suffer," he said here at an event. Section 3(d) of the Indian Patents Act, 1970 restricts patents for already-known drugs unless the new claims ar
Says govt has been able to protect domestic steel industry from 'dumping'
India is poised to contribute significantly to global steel demand, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday while emphasising that the government has been able to protect the domestic steel industry from unfair dumping and irrationally low pricing. Speaking on the sidelines of the Steel India 2025 event here, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Steel and industry body Ficci, Goyal also said both exporters and the MSME sector will continue to get steel at international prices. "India is consistently focused on self-reliance (Atmanirbharta). But when we talk about Atmanirbharta, we are not closing the doors to the world. We are in fact opening the doors wider because every country will have its competitive advantages for different products," he said. The Indian steel industry is a very highly efficient and cost-effective, high-quality producer, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister said. "Therefore we believe that this is one sector where we will not only meet the growing needs o
Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said the entire nation is united in its commitment to hold accountable the persons responsible for the terror attack in Pahalgam, in which 26 people lost their lives. Speaking at an event here, Goyal said Tuesday's attack has caused outrage from "Kargil to Kanyakumari". Terrorists opened fire in a meadow near Pahalgam in south Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon, killing 26 persons, mostly tourists. "This is a moment when the entire country comes together and, in one voice, expresses both its anger and collective commitment to hold accountable those responsible for this heinous crime," the Union commerce minister said. "There is an outrage from Kargil to Kanyakumari over the dastardly attack on innocent lives at Pahalgam. We are all united in grief. I offer my condolences to the victims and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. May god give strength to the families who are deeply impacted by this extremely heinous and criminal act committed by
Union minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said the action by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald case is aimed at protecting the nation's assets from being "taken over by the Gandhi family for personal use". Goyal alleged that Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were involved in a conspiracy to take control of the property, originally meant for public interest, through the now-defunct National Herald newspaper. The ED's action in the National Herald case is to save the nation's assets, the Union commerce minister told reporters here. Such property should be returned to the people, he said. It should be utilised for the people and not the Gandhi family, which was trying to keep it for its own interests, he claimed. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others on charges of money laundering in the National Herald case.
