Over 21 per cent polling in UP till 11 am

Voting picked up in Uttar Pradesh after a slow start on Sunday in 14 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state where SP President Akhilesh Yadav and Union minister Maneka Gandhi are among key contestants. The average poll percentage was 21.98 per cent, a state election office spokesperson said. While Basti parliamentary constituency recorded the highest turnout of 26.39 per cent, enthusiasm among voters was the least in Phulpur, where 18.20 per cent of eligible voters cast their ballots till 11 am. Altogether, 177 candidates are contesting in these 14 constituencies, where 2.53 crore people are eligible to vote at 16,998 polling centres. Polling was underway in Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Phulpur, Allahabad, Ambedkararnagar, Shrawasti, Domariyaganj, Basti, Sant Kabirnagar, Lalganj, Jaunpur, Machchlishahr, Bhadohi and Azamgarh constituencies in Purvanchal region of the state. PM Modi used hatred in elections, we used love: Rahul Gandhi

Congress president Rahul Gandhi Sunday cast his vote in Lok Sabha polls here and hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he "used hatred" during the elections but the grand old party "used love". Asserting that this elections saw a "good fight" between the two rival parties, Gandhi said he thought that "love is going to win". "Prime Minister Narendra Modi used hatred, we (Congress) love. And, I think love is going to win," he told reporters, soon after exercising his franchise. Clad in his trademark kurta-pyjama, he was accompanied by party's New Delhi candidate Ajay Maken on way to the polling booth, a walking distance from his Tughlaq Lane residence. Repoll underway in single booth in Kamaraj Nagar segment in

Polling is underway in a booth in the repoll in Kamaraj Nagar Assembly segment of Puducherry Parliamentary constituency Sunday. The Election Commission had ordered repoll in the booth following a complaint that officials had not cleared the mock poll votes recorded on the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machine. The mock polling was conducted before the actual election on April 18. A total of 952 voters including 479 women are expected to exercise their franchise at the repoll, official sources said. Tight security is in place for the repoll which began at 7 a.m and would go on till 6 p.m.

Voting begins late in some booths in Delhi

Voting, that was scheduled to start at 7 am, began late at some booths in the national capital Sunday. Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain said that voting started 50 minutes late at three polling booths. "Voting started at 7.50 am at 3 booths of Railway Jhuggi, Shakurbasti," he tweeted. However, there was no immediate response from the Chief Electoral Office. Shashi Devi, a 58-year-old resident of Mayur Vihar I, said that she and her son were made to wait for 20 minutes by officials at a polling booth. "My son and I came to cast our votes to avoid the heat, but after reaching the polling booth at 7 am, we were asked to wait for 20 minutes as officials were still in the process of starting polling," Devi said. Another voter, Rahul Sharma, had to wait to for half an hour outside the polling booth of his area to cast his vote. 7.67 per cent turnout in first two hours of polling

The national capital recorded a turnout of over 7 per cent in the first two hours of polling on Sunday, with North East Delhi recording the maximum voting percentage among seven constituencies, poll officials said. Voting began at 7 am on and it is scheduled to go on till 6 pm. "The total turn out in first two hours was 7.67 per cent," a senior official in the Delhi CEO Office said. Data from all polling booths has not yet been compiled. Voting percentage recorded in the seven constituencies are -- Chandni Chowk - 6.90 per cent; North East Delhi - 8.61; East Delhi - 8.31; New Delhi - 6.48; North West Delhi - 8.00; West Delhi - 8.33; and South Delhi - 7.05 pe cent. Polling underway for 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana

Polling began Sunday morning in ten constituencies of Haryana in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections, which will seal the fate of 223 candidates, including Union ministers Rao Inderjit Singh and Krishan Pal Gurjar. Polling began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm in the 10 parliamentary constituencies, officials said. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was among the early voters in Karnal. Haryana's Joint Chief Electoral Officer Inder Jeet said over 1.80 crore people are eligible to vote in the state. Of them, 97,16,516 are male, 83,40,173 female and 207 transgenders.
