Rlys seeks nuclear energy allocation for trains from NPCIL, Power Ministry

The Railways has approached the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and the Ministry of Power for the allocation of nuclear energy to meet its increasing power requirement, the Rajya Sabha was recently informed. "The power requirement of the Indian Railways (IR) is increasing consistently year on year. IR is exploring all the possible options of energy including nuclear energy. REC Q3 results: PAT grows 23% to Rs 4,076 cr, income at Rs 14,286.91 cr

State-owned REC Ltd on Thursday posted a 23 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 4,076.35 crore in the December quarter, aided by higher income. It had posted a net profit of Rs 3,308.42 crore in the October-December period of 2023-24 financial year, the company said in an exchange filing. The company's total income rose to Rs 14,286.91 crore in the reporting quarter from Rs 12,071.54 crore in the year-ago period. Total expenses stood at Rs 9,105.94 crore in the latest December quarter as against Rs 7,899.85 crore a year earlier. The board of the company also approved a third interim dividend of Rs 4.30 per share for the financial year 2024-25 and set February 14 as the record date for shareholders to become eligible for the payment. About Rs 15 trn required for adding power generation capacity in 2022-27

About Rs 15 lakh crore fund is required to add electricity generation capacity during 2022-27, which includes expenditure for projects to be commissioned in 2027-32, a power ministry statement said. The projected electrical energy requirement and peak electricity demand on all-India basis is estimated as 1908 BU (billion units) and 277 GW, respectively for 2026-27. The projections were made during a Meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament for Ministry of Power here last evening. Union Power Minister Manohar Lal chaired the meeting. India's power consumption rises 5% to 125.44 billion units in Nov

India's power consumption rose 5.14 per cent to 125.44 billion units (BU) in November as compared to the year-ago month. In November 2023, power consumption was 119.30 GW, as per the government data. The highest supply in a day (peak power demand met) also rose marginally to 207.42 GW in November 2024 from 204.56 GW in the year-ago period. The peak power demand touched an all-time high of about 250 GW in May this year. The previous all-time high peak power demand of 243.27 GW was recorded in September 2023. Earlier this year, the power ministry projected a peak power demand of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW during evening hours for May while 240 GW during daytime and 235 GW in the evening hours for June. Around 337,900 MW power capacity likely to be added by 2032: MoS Power

A total of 3,37,900 MW power generation capacity is likely to be added in the country by 2032, Parliament was informed on Monday. About 2,14,237 megawatt (MW) of electricity generation capacity was added in the last ten years, Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said in a reply to the Rajya Sabha. The total generation capacity increased by 79.5 per cent from 2,48,554 MW in March 2014 to 4,46,190 MW in June 2024, he said, adding that "the total anticipated capacity addition by 2032 will be 3,37,900 MW". Of the total anticipated capacity addition, 80,000 MW will be thermal, 25,010 MW hydropower, 14,300 MW nuclear and 50,760 MW of pump storage plants (PSP) capacity, the minister said. Further, 510 MW of small hydro capacity is expected to be added by 2032, besides 1,43,980 MW of solar power and 23,340 MW of wind power.

TN power tariff hike: Oppn slams govt, demands withdrawal of revision

Tamil Nadu's main opposition, the AIADMK and the BJP on Tuesday slammed the state government over the latest power tariff hike announced on July 15, saying the people cannot be burdened due to the "administrative inefficiency" of the ruling DMK. State-owned REC Ltd on Monday said it sanctioned Rs 1,12,747 crore worth of loans during April-June FY25, posting a year-on-year growth of 24.17 per cent. It had sanctioned Rs 90,797 crore as loan during the year-ago period, the company said in an exchange filing. Loan disbursements rose 27.89 per cent to Rs 43,652 crore in the period under review. During June quarter FY25, Rs 39,655 crore was sanctioned for renewable energy projects, up 58.72 per cent from the year-ago period. Loan disbursements more than doubled to Rs 5,351 crore from Rs 1,534 crore. REC, under Ministry of Power, is a non-banking financial company (NBFC) focusing on power sector financing in India.

The power ministry on Tuesday said it has asked all utilities "to maintain a high state of alert and minimise forced outages of equipment" amid heatwave pushing electricity demand, especially in the northern region where Monsoon is yet to arrive. The country's northern region has been experiencing high electricity demand due to a prevailing heatwave since May 17, 2024, the ministry said in a statement. Despite these challenging conditions, the ministry said, the highest ever peak demand of 89 GW in the northern region was successfully met on June 17, 2024. It was made possible by importing 25-30 per cent of the region's power requirement from neighbouring regions, it said. Peak power demand bounced back to nearly 241 GW on Tuesday after sliding for two straight days from the 245 GW level recorded on the first day of this month. The government data showed that the peak power demand touched an all-time high of 250 GW on May 31, 2024, breaking the previous record of 243.27 GW in September 2023.
