Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar, a day ahead of the Bharat Jodo Yatra beginning its Punjab leg. The Haryana leg of the march concluded on Tuesday in Ambala district. Gandhi will spend few hours in the holy city of Amritsar before returning to Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab this evening, Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications, Jairam Ramesh told reporters in Ambala. In a tweet earlier in the day, Ramesh said, "Day 116 #BharatJodoYatra finishes Haryana leg in Ambala now. 2mrw morning is Punjab leg. There can be no better way to begin that than with a pilgrimage to holiest Golden Temple in Amritsar. "There'll be no padyatra this afternoon so that @RahulGandhican pay his respects there," he had said in his tweet. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will pay obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar this afternoon before the Bharat Jodo Yatra begins its Punjab leg on Wednesday. Cold wave sweeps Haryana and Punjab, Hisar reels at 1.4 degrees celsius

The ongoing cold wave sweeping Haryana and Punjab continued unabated, with minimum temperatures on Sunday hovering below normal limits at most places. While the minimum temperatures have been hovering below normal limits at most places for the past over a fortnight, the maximum temperatures too have dropped sharply for the past over a week. According to the MeT Department's weather report, dense fog was observed at most places in Haryana and Punjab on Sunday morning. Fog has enveloped several parts of both the states in recent days, reducing visibility in the morning hours. Cold conditions continued to prevail in Haryana and Punjab, with minimum temperatures remaining below normal at many places on Friday. According to the Met department's weather report, Narnaul was the coldest place in Haryana, recording a minimum temperature of 2.5 degrees Celsius. Hisar, which recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degrees, was also gripped by biting cold. Bhiwani recorded a low of 5.8 degrees Celsius, Karnal 4.8 degrees, Rohtak 6.2 degrees. Bomb found near Punjab, Haryana chief ministers' official residences

A bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot after a live bomb was found a few hundred metres away from the helipad used by Punjab and Haryana chief ministers here on Monday, police said. The shell was found in the fields on the Nayagaon-Kansal road, which is about one kilometre away from the helipad and about two kilometres from the official residences of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar, they said. An official of the disaster management department who reached the spot told reporters that the police control room received a message that a bomb-like object had been seen near the Kansal and Nayagaon T-point. "When we checked it and found that it was a live shell," he said, adding the area has been sealed. "It is a matter of investigation how this shell reached the spot," the official said. Severe cold grips Punjab, Haryana; Bathinda coldest at 0.4 deg C

Severe cold conditions gripped Punjab and Haryana on Monday, with minimum temperatures registering a sharp fall at many places. A thick blanket of fog in the morning continued to envelop parts of both the states and Chandigarh, reducing visibility. Fog covers parts of Punjab and Haryana, intense cold conditions prevail

Fog shrouded many parts of Punjab and Haryana where intense cold weather conditions continued on Tuesday. In Haryana, Narnaul shivered at one degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal, according to a report of the Meteorological Department here. Among other places in the state, Ambala's minimum was 7.5 degrees Celsius while Karnal's low was 5.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperatures of Hisar, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa settled at 3.9, 6.6, 4.4 and 4 degrees Celsius respectively. Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded its minimum at 6.9 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Bathinda experienced cold weather conditions at 1.4 degrees Celsius. Amritsar recorded its low at 5 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana's minimum was 6.6 degrees Celsius. Pathankot, Faridkot and Gurdaspur recorded their respective minimums at 7.2, 4.4 and 3 degrees Celsius respectively.

Punjab Police conducts special operation at bus stands, railway stations

Punjab Police on Friday conducted a special operation at vulnerable locations, including railway stations and bus stands, to search and round-up suspicious persons for verification. The special drive -- Operation Eagle -- was conducted in all 28 police districts of the state on the directions of Director-General of Police Gaurav Yadav, an official statement said. "Apart from checking at bus stands and railway stations, over 500 well-coordinated strong 'nakas' (checkpoints) involving over 5,000 police personnel, were also set-up under the supervision of deputy superintendents of police in the state for a thorough search of suspected vehicles/persons, while ensuring minimum inconvenience to the general public," it said.
