There will be three versions of Vande Bharat trains -- Vande Chair Car, Vande Metro and Vande Sleepers -- by February-March next year, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday. These indigenous semi-high speed trains, which are being prepped to replace Shatabdis, Rajdhanis and local trains, are being made at the Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai. In an interview with PTI, the minister said in the next three to four years, railway tracks will be upgraded to support the maximum speed of 160 kmph of Vande Bharat trains. "There are three formats of Vande Bharat. Vande Metro for less than 100 kilometres, Vande Chair Car for 100-550 kilometres and Vande Sleepers for a journey beyond 550 kilometres. During the summer season this year, Railways will run 6,369 trips of 380 special trains to and from major destinations such as Patna, New Delhi, Visakhapatnam and Mumbai, the ministry said on Friday. The national transporter is running 1,770 more trips of summer special trains this year than in 2022. Last year, it ran 4,599 trips on 348 special trains. While an average of 13.2 trips per train were run during last summer, the figure this year will be 16.8, the ministry said. The major routes to be covered this year are Patna-Secunderabad, Patna-Yesvantpur, Barauni-Muzaffarpur, Delhi-Patna, New Delhi-Katra, Chandigarh-Gorakhpur, Anand Vihar-Patna, Visakhapatnam-Puri-Howrah, Mumbai-Patna, and Mumbai-Gorakhpur. The trial of the semi-high speed Vande Bhagat Express train on the Mumbai-Goa route began on Tuesday, officials said. A Vande Bharat rake, capable of running at the top speed of 180 kmph, departed from platform number 7 of CSMT in Mumbai at 5:30 AM and reached Madgaon station in Goa at 12.50 PM. The rake departed from Madaon at around 1.15 pm and it is expected to reach CSMT late in the evening. The trial is being carried out using the rake of CSMT-Shirdi Vande Bharat Express that does not run on Tuesdays, officials said. Currently, three Vande Bharat Express trains operate between the financial capital and Ahmedabad, Solapur and Shirdi. Senior railway authorities are exploring the possibility of operating Vande Bharat Express trains on the popular Mumbai-Goa route which witness heavy rush throughout the year, officials added. Signages at railway stations across India will be standardised on the basis of colour, font and the use of pictograms for the ease of passengers, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday as he released a booklet containing details of the project. The Indian Railways, which is redeveloping 1,275 stations across India under the 'Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme', will seek to have uniform signages across stations to make it convenient for passengers. Railway ticket checkers are being provided body cameras with the aim to ensure transparency in the process and prevent violent and unruly behaviour on board trains, officials said. As a pilot project, the Central Railway has procured 50 such body cameras and provided them to ticket checkers in the Mumbai Division. Procured at a cost of Rs 9,000 each, these body cameras can record about 20 hours of footage. Officials say that if the pilot project in Mumbai is successful, it will be replicated across the rail network. Body cameras were first worn by police in the United Kingdom in 2005 and have since been adopted by numerous police forces and law enforcement agencies worldwide. The South Central Railway (SCR) zone's Vijayawada Division has logged impressive financial metrics for the fiscal 2022-23, which include the highest ever gross earnings of Rs 5,306 crore and highest ever passenger revenue of Rs 1,247 crore among others, said an official on Thursday. Gross earnings rose by 66 per cent when compared to fiscal 2021-22 while the Division's previous best of Rs 5,136 crore was logged in 2018-19. Shivendra Mohan, divisional railway manager (DRM), said, "Divisional performance in 2022-23 is path breaking in the history of the Division, and exceeded the set targets and on all major fronts." Incidentally, the passenger revenues shot up by 70 per cent in comparison to Rs 730 crore recoded in the previous fiscal. The Western Railway (WR) on Wednesday launched a mobile application that will allow commuters to check the live status of trains on its suburban network spread between Churchgate station in south Mumbai and Dahanu in adjoining Palghar district. According to the zonal railway, the app, 'Yatri', also has several other features. Western Railway general manager Ashok Kumar Misra launched the app at Churchgate station concourse in the presence of railway officials and other dignitaries, Sumit Thakur, chief public relations officer, WR, said in a press release. The Western Railway has installed GPS tracking devices in all its suburban trains, which will enable the app to provide their real-time location.
