The Railways has earned more than Rs 600 crore through convenience fee, which it retains from passengers on the cancellation of a ticket, so far in 2022-23, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the cancellation or clerkage charge is levied on cancellation of tickets as per the Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Tickets and Refund of Fare) Rules 2015. In addition to the normal fare indicated on the reserved tickets issued through computerised passenger reservation system counters, the Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) also charges convenience fee from passengers who book tickets online. The minister said the convenience fee amount charged is Rs 30 for air-conditioned classes and Rs 15 for non-AC classes. On cancellation of ticket, this convenience fee is not refunded. More than 1,500 cases of stone pelting on moving trains were recorded across the country in 2022 and over 400 people arrested for the offence, the Railways said Wednesday. Vande Bharat trains have also suffered damage due to stone pelting, the most recent being in West Bengal. Soon after its launch, the New Jalpaiguri-Howrah Vande Bharat Express fell prey to stone pelters. Earlier this month, coaches of the Vande Bharat train were pelted with stones at the Visakhapatnam railway station in Kancharapalem area. Several windows of the train were shattered. "During the year 1,503 cases of stone pelting on moving trains were registered by RPF followed by arrest of 488 persons. Several awareness drives are being made by RPF using different means to educate residents near railway track. On January 3, the agency had booked Pramod Kumar Jena, a 1987-batch Indian Railway Traffic Service officer who retired in November last year, for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The officials said the Central Bureau of Investigation searched Jena's premises in Bhubaneswar. Over Rs 1.57 crore, 17 kilograms of gold and jewellery (ranging between Rs 8 crore and Rs 10 crore), besides bank and postal deposit receipts of Rs 2.5 crore and a large number of property documents were found, they said. People taking the train on the Kalka-Shimla heritage line may soon get to travel in advanced vistadome narrow gauge coaches which will have glass roofs and large windows and offer a panoramic view of the scenic route. The Rail Coach Factory (RCF) here has commenced production of these coaches, which are expected to be ready by next month. These coaches will have a trial run on the Kalka-Shimla route before they are put into service, officials said. The production of the vistadome narrow gauge coaches commenced following successful oscillation trials of two prototype coaches on the Kalka-Shimla heritage track in December last year. The RCF is likely to roll out four of these coaches by the first week of February, its general manager Ashesh Agrawal told PTI here. The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the Uttarakhand High Court order for removal of encroachments from 29 acres of land claimed by the railways in Haldwani, calling it a "human issue" and saying 50,000 people cannot be uprooted overnight. Amid protests by residents who insist they have title to the land, a bench of Justices S K Kaul and A S Oka said a workable solution needs to be found. According to the railways, there are 4,365 encroachers on the land. Nearly 50,000 people, a majority of them Muslims, belonging to over 4,000 families reside on the disputed land. The apex court issued notices to the railways and the state government seeking their responses to a batch of pleas challenging the high court order for removal of encroachments. "Notice.
