Telecom operators including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have introduced new voice and SMS only plans for prepaid users in India. The move assumes significance as telecom regulator TRAI, last month, had amended tariff rules to mandate mobile service providers to issue a separate plan for voice calls and SMS, for customers who do not require data. Airtel has introduced a new Rs 499 plan, which offers unlimited voice calls, 900 SMS with 84 days validity. Another offering, Rs 1,959 plan, would offer prepaid users unlimited voice calls, 3,600 SMS and comes with a validity of 365 days. Jio too has unveiled two plans. According to information on Jio website, the Rs 458 plan - with 84 days validity - offers unlimited voice calls, and 1,000 SMSs. The Rs 1,958 plan offers unlimited voice calls and packs in 3,600 SMSs with 365 days pack validity.

Reliance Jio, India's largest telecom operator, on Thursday reported a 24 per cent jump in its October-December quarter net profit as average per-user revenue rose largely due to tariff hike. Its standalone net profit of Rs 6,477 crore in October-December 2024 compared to Rs 5,208 crore in the same period a year back and Rs 6,231 crore in the preceding July-September 2024 quarter, according to a stock exchange filing by the company. Jio's revenue from operations was up at Rs 29,307 crore from Rs 25,368 crore in October-December 2023.

India's largest telecom operator Reliance Jio lost 37.6 lakh wireless subscribers in October but spruced up its active mobile subscriber base by adding 38.47 lakh users, as per monthly data released by telecom regulator Trai on Monday. Overall, Bharti Airtel added 19.28 lakh users to its wireless coffers during the month and its active subscriber gains were about 27.23 lakh for October. Vodafone Idea lost 19.77 lakh wireless subscribers and its active subscriber base fell nearly 7.23 lakh users. Overall, so far as headline numbers are concerned, Reliance Jio's total wireless tally slipped to 46 crore in October down from about 46.37 crore in September, although its active user base (a key monitorable for telcos) strengthened. The total wireless user base of Vodafone Idea fell to 21.04 crore in October from 21.24 crore in the previous month. In all, the total number of active wireless subscribers in the month under review was 1,066.67 million (106.6 crore), as per Trai's sectoral .
