Islamic Centre asks Muslims to seek approval for loudspeaker use

The Islamic Centre of India on Tuesday urged Muslims in Uttar Pradesh to take permission from concerned authorities in case they want to use loudspeakers.In an advisory issued, Chairman Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali appealed people to follow the Allahabad court's order in the regard and asked them to obtain permission from the district administration to install speakers in the mosques.It further stated that the government had already issued a request form to obtain permission from the district administration, and the same can be collected from the office of Islamic Centre of India.Earlier on January 7, the Uttar Pradesh police had been directed to remove all loudspeakers present in public places, religious and otherwise, that have been installed without appropriate permission being sanctioned towards the same, in a bid to curb noise pollution caused by them.The order was issued following directions from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on the matter, citing the ...

Vice-Prez to offer prayers at hill shrine on Jan.11

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will offer prayers at the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara near here, on Thursday, a temple official said today. Arriving in the evening on Wednesday, he would pray at the shrine the next morning, temple Public Relations Officer T Ravi told PTI. This would be Naidu's first visit to the temple after being sworn in on August 11 last year. An ardent devotee, Naidu had earlier visited the shrine in his capacity as Vice President-elect on August 7 last year, the officer added.

Owaisi slams 'joker' Rizvi over his anti-Madrasas letter to PM

5 member committee of Bishops constituted to study land deal

The Synod of Kerala-based Syro-Malabar Church today constituted a five member committee of bishops to study the controversial land deal in Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese, in which the Church allegedly suffered huge financial loss. The committee, headed by Archbishop Mathew Moolakkattu, will study the issue and find a solution to the problem, a Church spokesman said here. Bishops Jacob Manathodath, Thomas Chakyat, George Madathikandathil and Antony Kariyil are the committee members. The committee has been authorised to hold necessary discussions and find a solution, the spokesman said. He said the Synod held 'serious discussions' on the issue of land deals in the Archdiocese. TMC leader organises 'Brahmin meet' in Bengal's Birbhum dist

A senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader organised a "Brahmin convention" in Bolpur town of Birbhum district today, a move described by the BJP as the Mamata Banerjee-led party's tactical shift towards "soft Hindutva". The day-long "Brahmin and Purohit Sammelan" was held by the TMC's Birbhum district president, Anubrata Mondal, who is a strong critic of the BJP and its policies. Mondal said the convention was organised to highlight the "misinterpretations" of Hinduism by the BJP and discuss what the Hindu religion stood for. "Hinduism is being misinterpreted by the BJP. West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh today alleged that the Trinamool Congress was trying to "befool" the Hindus by organising the Brahmin convention in Birbhum district. "The Trinamool Congress had earlier befooled the Muslims and now they are trying to befool the Hindus by organising Brahmin convention," Ghosh told a public rally at Ausgram in Purba Burdwan district. The Synod of Kerala-based Syro-Malabar Church will begin here tomorrow amid a raging controversy over a land deal in which the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese allegedly suffered huge financial loss. A group of priests and faithful have accused Syro-Malabar Church head Cardinal George Alencherry, who is also the Archbishop of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese, for selling the prime land of the archdiocese here for "a very low price". They alleged role of land mafia in the sale of land in a non-transparent manner violating even civil and canon laws. Kerala church gets back all-India jurisdiction with Shamshabad

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church today scored a historic victory with the inauguration of the Shamshabad Diocese here with pan-India jurisdiction, excluding the existing 30 dioceses, something they lost in 1886 to the Latin Church. With over 5 million followers, the Kerala-based church is the second largest Christian grouping in India. Major Archbishop Cardinal George Alencherry, the head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, formally dedicated the diocese to the Vatican with the installation of Raphael Thattil as its first bishop. Tourism projects worth Rs 70 crore announced in Meghalaya

Ahead of the Assembly elections in Meghalaya, Union Tourism Minister K J Alphons today announced projects valued at Rs 70 crore to develop religious and spiritual circuits in the state which, he said, lack infrastructure. These projects will be completed within a period between six and 18 months. "Places of worship in Meghalaya lack infrastructure. They do not have parking areas and they are not lit. Project consultants were brought here and we decided to sanction these projects," Alphons told reporters here. The ministry has sanctioned Rs 61,38 crore for illumination, landscaping, construction of parking lots and others in 37 Christian churches, and Rs 8.61 crore for similar projects for 11 other religious groups including the indigenous religions of the Khasi Jaintia tribals here. Panel on separate religion status for Lingayats/Veerashaivas

The seven-member expertcommittee constituted to look into the issue of separatereligion status to Veerashivas/Lingayats has sought sixmonths time to submit its report. The committee, which met for the fist time today,had been given four weeks time by the government to submit its report. "We cannot complete our work in the four weeks timethat the government has given us," Committee Chairman, Justice H N Nagamohan Das told reportershere after the meeting. "This is an important issueand the committee has an important responsibility to fulfill,"he said. City-based Islamic seminary Jamia Nizamia has issued a 'fatwa' that Muslims should avoid eating prawns. Prawns do not fall in the category of fish, and their consumption should be avoided, it said. Some foods fall in the 'prohibited' category for Muslims, while prawns fall in 'avoidable' category, it said. Jamia Nizamia, a century-old seminary, is a highly- respected Islamic institution in the city. Fatwa is a legal pronouncement based on the Islamic law, issued usually when someone seeks to know the legal position on a particular issue.
