CBI books former Director of NEERI, other scientists in corruption cases

The CBI has booked Nagpur Rakesh Kumar, the former director of CSIRNEERI, and four scientists of the institute in three FIRs of alleged corruption and favours extended to private companies in awarding various projects, including the giant air-purifiers WAYU, officials said Wednesday. The CBI conducted searches on Wednesday at 17 locations in Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar, and Delhi, resulting in the seizure of "incriminating" documents, property-related documents and jewellery, they said. They said the agency's action followed allegations of criminal conspiracy and corruption in a complaint received from the Chief Vigilance Officer of CSIR against National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) scientists - former Director Rakesh Kumar, Chief Scientists Atya Kapley and Sanjeev Kumar Goyal, Principal Scientist Ritesh Vijay, and Senior Scientist Sunil Gulia, posted at Zonal Centre Delhi. Aim for space station by 2035, India on Moon by 2040: PM Modi to scientists

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked scientists to aim to send the first Indian to the Moon by 2040 and set up an Indian space station by 2035, according to an official statement. He gave these directions during a meeting to review the preparedness of the Gaganyaan mission and the first demonstration flight of the crew escape system test vehicle scheduled for October 21. "The meeting evaluated the mission's readiness, affirming its launch in 2025," the statement said. During the meeting, the prime minister outlined the future of India's space exploration endeavours and urged scientists to work towards interplanetary missions, including a Venus Orbiter Mission and a Mars Lander. "Building on the success of Indian space initiatives, including the recent Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L1 missions, the prime minister directed that India should now aim for new and ambitious goals, including setting up 'Bharatiya Antariksha Station' (Indian space station) by 2035 and sending first ..

As sun blinks from amid clouds, scientists witness Zero Shadow Day

As young space enthusiasts gathered at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP) here on Friday to witness the Zero Shadow Day', they feared that the cloudy skies would cast a shadow on the rare celestial event. Zero Shadow Day or No Shadow Day is a phenomenon during which the sun is positioned directly overhead causing no shadows to be formed on the earth's surface. However, the clouds provided a 45-second window for the sun to blink at the nick of the moment before hiding, much to the delight of students and the scientific community. The IIAP, Bengaluru had organised the event on its premises in Koramangala this afternoon. A large number of students had gathered to have a glimpse of Zero Shadow Day', which occurred exactly at 12:20 pm in the city. For the past few days sun was shining bright but on Friday dark clouds hovered over the sky, threatening to mar the rare phenomenon. Yet, with hopes that the phenomenon would occur, the scientific community made all the arrangements.

Scientists use AI to develop better, simpler hepatitis C, Covid-19 tests

Scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) tools to simplify a test that works for both hepatitis C and SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The simplified test happens in one small test tube in just a few minutes. With further refinement, it could arrive at doctor's offices soon and, one day, become available as home tests that are as easy as a pregnancy test, the researchers said. "We are trying to build a home-based test that is as reliable as a lab-based test, said Piyush Jain, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Florida (UF) in the US. "Our objective is to develop a simple test that eliminates the need for expensive equipment and provides results in just 10 to 20 minutes," said Jain, who led the research published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine. The team is innovating on a system known as a one-pot reaction because the entire test happens in one small test tube. These tests, based on a technology known as RT-LAMP, can amplify small ..

India's cheetah reintroduction plan ignored spatial ecology: Scientists

The introduction of African cheetahs to India was planned without considering their spatial ecology, according to researchers who warn that the released animals may come into conflict with people in the neighbouring villages. Spatial ecology addresses the fundamental effects of space on the movement of individual species and on the stability of multispecies communities. A total of 20 cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa were introduced to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh since last year to establish a free-ranging populationfor the first time since their extinction in India 70 years ago. Scientists of the Cheetah Research Project of Leibniz-IZW in Namibia argue that in southern Africa, cheetahs live in a stable socio-spatial system with widely spread territories and densities of less than one individual per 100 square kilometres (km). The plan for cheetahs in Kuno National Park assumes that the high prey density will sustain high cheetah densities, even though there is no ...

India, UK scientists collaborate on SMART early warning flood alert system

Scientists from India and the UK have come together to create a real-time early warning system to help reduce the devastating impact of flooding on people and property, particularly in mountainous regions where extreme water events are a major problem. An international team of researchers from the University of Birmingham, Imperial College London, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, and People's Science Institute, Dehradun, worked on integrating science, policy and local community-led approaches to create a so-called SMART approach that better fits the local context. Publishing their findings in Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences' this week, the team hopes their new approach could better signal impending risk from flooding around the world. "A 'wicked' problem is a social or cultural challenge that's difficult or impossible to solve because of its complex, interconnected nature. We believe that integrating social science and meteorological data will help to identify unkno
