US effort to curb China, Russia's access to new chips 'inadequate': Report

The Commerce Department's efforts to curb China's and Russia's access to American-made advanced computer chips have been inadequate and will need more funding to stymie their ability to manufacture advanced weapons, according to a report published Wednesday by the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. The Biden administration imposed export controls to limit the ability of China and Russia to access US-made chips after Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago. The agency's Bureau of Industry and Security, according to the report, does not have the resources to enforce export controls and has been too reliant on US chip makers voluntarily complying with the rules. But the push for bolstering Commerce's export control enforcement comes as the incoming Trump administration says it is looking to dramatically reduce the size and scope of federal government. President-elect Donald Trump has tapped entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new Department

Suchi Semicon starts plant without govt's incentive, plans to spend $100 mn

Gujarat-based Suchi Semicon has started production of semiconductors without the Centre's incentive and plans to invest USD 100 million in three years, a top official of the company said on Sunday. Suchi Group Chairman and Suchi Semicon founder Ashok Mehta said though the company has applied for the Centre's incentive under SPECS (Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors) and India Semiconductor Mission, it does not want to hold on to production for the sake of incentives. "We have a full proof business plan. Our business plan is not primarily for incentives. We have set up a plant to do business. The Centre's approval will come when we meet their requirements. We have made USD 100 million (about Rs 840 crore) investment plan over three years," Mehta said. He said that the state government has approved 20 per cent incentives for the plant. "At the time of Covid when there was shortage of semiconductors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked

China's ban on high-tech materials could impact industries, economy

China has banned exports of key materials used to make a wide range of products, including smartphones, electric vehicles, radar systems and CT scanners, swiping back at Washington after it expanded export controls to include dozens of Chinese companies that make equipment used to produce advanced computer chips. Both sides say their controls are justified by national security concerns and both accuse the other of weaponising trade. Analysts say the latest restrictions could have a wide impact on manufacturing in many industries and supply chains. Critical mineral security is now intrinsically linked to the escalating tech trade war, Gracelin Baskaran and Meredith Schwartz of the Center for Strategic International Studies, wrote in a report on Beijing's decision. The full impact will depend partly on whether US industries can compensate for any loss of access to the strategically important materials, equipment and components. Here's why this could be a tipping point in trade confli

Govt to come out with legal framework to ensure data privacy: Piyush Goyal

India will come out with a legal framework to ensure data privacy that will encourage free data flow among trusted partners, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said, as he sought investment in technology and innovation. Speaking at the UK India Business Council's 'UK-India Technology Futures Conference', the minister said India and the UK can collaborate on technology in the fields of AI education, telemedicine, climate modelling, precision agriculture and organic chemical, electronic and food industries. Goyal pointed out that it will be important to understand how in the future the digital world and sustainability issues will intersect. A major portion of energy will be consumed by systems that will churn out data and that will have an impact on sustainability issues, he said, adding that there are very few places in the world where there is an interconnected grid in the way that India has. The minister said that by 2030, India would have a thousand-gigawatt
