India preparing to become trusted hub for global chip manufacturing: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday pitched India as a trusted destination for global chip manufacturing and said the government is taking all measures to ensure the industry's success through enabling policies and frameworks. Speaking at the inauguration of the SEMICON India 2026, the PM said that the semiconductor ecosystem is expanding rapidly, opening new opportunities for innovation, investment and growth. The world needs new and trusted locations for chip manufacturing, and India is preparing itself for this, he said. India is taking all measures to become a preferred destination for semiconductor manufacturing, he further said. So far, 12 chip-making projects have been approved, and the next phase will see the numbers increase further, the PM noted. Micron to scale up semiconductor assembly, testing in India next year

India's semiconductor policy push has given the industry a strong foundation it didn't have, and the nation has moved from vision to execution now, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on Thursday, as he announced the company's plan to scale up chip assembly and testing facility here by multifold next year. "For decades, people have talked about India's semiconductor potential. I have been in many of those conversations. Potential does not ship products. What I see in India today is execution," Mehrotra said, speaking at the SEMICON India 2026 inaugural. The government has notified the Semicon 2.0 scheme with an outlay of Rs 1.27 lakh crore to boost the chip manufacturing ecosystem in the country. The scheme has been divided into six segments covering designing of chips by Indian firms, setting up units for capital equipment required for chip production, semiconductor fabs, chip assembly, packaging and testing, etc. "The government has decided to provide ... sustained policy support to the semiconductor sector in India by notifying the Semicon 2.0 Scheme for the development of semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem in India. "Semicon 2.0 provides fiscal support to various verticals across the complete value chain of the semiconductor industry, ranging from chip design, fabrication and packaging to various segments of the semiconductor ecosystem," the notification said. The scheme will aim to build resilient, trusted, and sovereign semiconductor technologies by focusing on designing, development, and deployment of target .
