The big-ticket announcements by players including Micron, Applied Materials, and Lam Research during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit will create an estimated 80,000 jobs, and underscore the resolve of the two countries to shape the future of technology, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Friday. The Minister of State for Electronics and IT termed the announcements by Micron Technology, Applied Materials and Lam Research as a "significant and meaningful milestone" and "central piece" in the growth semiconductor ecosystem in the country. "These three investment decisions will create a minimum of 80,000 jobs directly in my estimate and indirectly the numbers could be much higher. More than that it will be a catalyst to the overall electronics and semiconductor ecosystem," Chandrasekhar said. First Made-in-India semiconductor chips to come by Dec 2024: Vaishnaw

First Made-in-India chips are expected to be rolled out by December 2024, Union Minister for Communications and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday. The minister said 4-5 semiconductor plants are expected to be set up in the country within a year. "First Made-in-India chip will be out by December 2024," Vaishnaw said while briefing media following a joint statement issued by US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US. He said that land allocation, factory design work and tax compliance related agreement for the Micron semiconductor plant to be set up in Gujarat has been completed. "First Made-in India chip from Micron is expected to come out in about six quarters from now," Vaishnaw said. Micron to set up $2.75 bn semiconductor assembly, test plant in Gujarat

Computer storage chip maker Micron will set up a semiconductor assembly and test plant in Gujarat entailing a total investment of USD 2.75 billion (around Rs 22,540 crore), the company said on Thursday. Micron will invest up to USD 825 million in setting up the plant in two phases. Micron's plant has been approved under the government's Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme,. Under the scheme, Micron will receive 50 per cent fiscal support for the total project cost from the Indian central government and incentives representing 20 per cent of the total project cost from the state of Gujarat. "Phased construction of the new assembly and test facility in Gujarat is expected to begin in 2023. Phase 1, which will include 500,000 square feet of planned cleanroom space, will start to become operational in late 2024," Micron said in a statement.
