India is cementing its place in future of global supply and value chains, and soon-to-be announced semiconductor fab and first packaging unit in the offing along with potentially 100 design startups by 2024 mark its rise as a semiconductor nation, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Friday. From near zero levels just a year-and-half ago, India is now well on its way to having 100 semiconductor design startups by 2024. Currently as many as 27-30 design and semiconductor start-ups are "doing very good work", he said. Nissan reports surging profit amid strong sales, easing chip crunch

Japanese automaker Nissan reported Thursday a seven-fold surge in January-March profit and forecast strong sales for this fiscal year riding on the popularity of its new model offerings. Nissan Motor Co.'s net profit for the fiscal fourth quarter totalled 106.9 billion yen (USD 798 million), up dramatically from 14.2 billion yen a year ago. Quarterly sales jumped 36 per cent to 3.097 trillion yen (USD 23 billion), amid an easing of the supply shortage of computer chips and other parts, which had been caused by social restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. Chief Executive Makoto Uchida told reporters the automaker was preparing all-solid-state batteries for its electric models, as the world makes a rapid shift toward green zero-emissions technology. Vedanta expects to start building semiconductor plant by Oct-Dec quarter

Vedanta group is expecting to start building its Rs 1.5 lakh crore semiconductor plant in October-December this year and producing electronic chips by the first half of 2027, senior company officials said on Tuesday. Vedanta Semiconductor and Display business, global managing director, Akarsh Hebbar and Vedanta-Foxconn Semiconductors Limited CEO David Reed in a joint interview with PTI said the group has submitted all the technology tie-ups to the government and banks are comfortable in funding the project cost in the ratio of 70 and 30 (from the company) after adjusting subsidy. "We are planning by the fourth quarter of this year to have the first shovel ceremony. We are working on everything to have revenue by 2027. We would have this start with 5,000 wafers in the first part of 2027. And then, we will incrementally take that up to 40,000 wafers a month," Reed said.
