A 27-year old man, taken into police custody near here based on a complaint from his family, was found hanging in the police station Tuesday morning, police said. Nawas was taken into custody on Monday evening. In his complaint, Nawas's brother said Nawas was behaving violently at home after consuming liquor. He was found hanging from the window grill of the toilet at the station. The incident occurred just ahead of his being taken to court. Taking serious note of the incident, state police chief Loknath Behera directed the Ernakulam range IG to initiate stern action against the police officials in connection with the alleged custodial death. In line with the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission and the Supreme Court, a magisterial-level investigation into the custodial death would be conducted, the state police chief said.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) Tuesday asked the Director General of Police (DGP) of Rajasthan to ensure a swift and speedy probe into the reported gang rape of a woman in Bikaner. A married woman, who had gone out to collect firewood was allegedly sexually assaulted by three persons at an isolated place, police had said on Sunday. The alleged incident took place on May 15. The woman reached the police station along with her husband in the wee hours of May 18 to lodge a complaint. NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma in a letter to Rajasthan DGP Kapil Garg said, "The NCW is deeply disturbed by the media report captioned 'Married Woman gang-raped by three in Rajasthan's Bikaner on May 20". The Jammu and Kashmir BJP unit Tuesday batted strongly for grant of seats reserved in the state assembly to displaced people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Twenty-five seats are reserved for the people from that region. The United States on Monday (local time) said that a 16-year-old boy from Guatemala died at a Border Patrol station in southern Texas, becoming the fifth death of migrant child since December last year.In a statement, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the Border Patrol apprehended the teenager in Rio Grande Valley on May 13. The CBP said the teenager was found unresponsive on Monday morning during a welfare check, Al Jazeera reported.The agency did not state why the teenager was detained for a week but said he was "due for placement" in a facility for youth operated by the US Department of Health and Human Services.The incident happened less than a week following the death of a two-year-old child after he and his mother were detained by the Border Patrol.According to the US and Guatemalan authorities, the small child died after several weeks in the hospital. A man allegedly committed suicide at a public park in front of the collectorate in Hanumangarh of Rajasthan, police said Tuesday. Surjaram, aged 50, allegedly hanged himself from a tree, police said.
