PCB might start fresh inquiry against Kaneria after spot-fixing confession

The Pakistan Cricket Board might initiate a new inquiry against banned spinner Danish Kaneria after he confessed to being guilty of spot-fixing following six years of denial. Kaneria was banned for life by the England Cricket Board in 2012. The PCB, in 2012, followed the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption protocol and ratified the life ban on Kaneria, who was found guilty of spot-fixing and instigating other players to spot-fix in English county matches. Kaneria has lost a round of appeals against his life ban and is now also required to pay the ECB around 100,000 pounds for the case. "Kaneria's confession is a serious matter and this week the Chairman of the board, Ehsan Mani will have deliberations with his legal team and the Board's Anti-Corruption and Vigilance officials to see if a new inquiry should be opened up against Kaneria since he has now admitted to corruption," a reliable source in the PCB said. The official said the life ban on Kaneria was imposed on ...

The exhausted Jabeur served the last game with severe cramp and tears in her eyes. "I saw you gave everything today and this is what sport is about," Kasatkina told Jabeur. "When I was a little girl 10 years ago, I was coming to this tournament and dreaming of being champion one day," the 21-year-old Russian said. "Thank you to everyone who believed in me." Emery's Arsenal face gruelling week

Unai Emery admits Arsenal will struggle to cope with a draining schedule that sees them host Leicester at the start of three games in seven days. Emery's side will be pushed to the limit by the television schedulers, who moved their Premier League clash with the Foxes to Monday evening at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners then travel to Portugal for a Europa League tie against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday before returning to domestic action at Crystal Palace on Sunday. In contrast, Sporting were due to face Loures on Saturday night, giving them more time to recover before hosting Arsenal. Emery has fielded a strong side in Arsenal's previous Europa League matches, but he will be forced to rotate more heavily this time. "We are one team with a very high level and very high demand for us," he said. "Every player, they need to feel they can play every match. With only three days difference between one match and another, you can't do that. "You can't do that with play and rest, play and we

Klopp happy to win 'average' matches at last

Jurgen Klopp suggested he had found a way to win "average matches" for the first time in his managerial career after Liverpool eked out an unconvincing 1-0 Premier League victory at Huddersfield. This result ensured Liverpool finished Saturday level on points with leaders Manchester City after Mohamed Salah's first-half goal, his 50th in English club football, proved enough to defeat their struggling opponents. Liverpool laboured through the match, while Huddersfield, without a goal in five home league matches this season, were unlucky not to gain a point. Jonathan Hogg hit the post with a 25-yard shot just after the half-hour mark for David Wagner's side, while James Milner escaped a penalty appeal when he handled the ball shortly before half-time. Klopp has developed a reputation for building spectacular attacking teams, with Liverpool the second-highest scorers in last season's Premier League, behind only champions Manchester City. This season, however, they are only the ...

Ten-man Bayern end winless streak as Alcacer keeps Dortmund top

Ten-man Bayern Munich ended their four-match winless streak on Saturday as Robert Lewandowski scored twice in a 3-1 win at Wolfsburg, a day after the club's hierarchy launched an extraordinary attack on the German media. After back-to-back league defeats, Bayern leapt from sixth to third in the Bundesliga, four points behind Borussia Dortmund who routed Stuttgart 4-0 with Paco Alcacer claiming his seventh goal in four Bundesliga games. Bayern got back to winning ways in Wolfsburg the day after chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and president Uli Hoeness slammed the media in Germany for "disrespectful and disgusting" reporting on star-studded Munich. Bayern worked for the win, playing the last half an hour with ten men after Arjen Robben was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. "There was a lot of pressure on this game and I want to thank the boys for a top performance," said Bayern head coach Niko Kovac. "It was a very concentrated display. It is the first step and showed that FC ...

Barca victory tarnished as injured Messi set to miss three weeks

Lionel Messi is expected to be out for three weeks with a fractured right arm but his last contribution was to help send Barcelona back to the top of La Liga on Saturday. Messi scored and then went off injured as Barca beat Sevilla 4-2 at Camp Nou, in a six-goal thriller that never looked like ending in anything other than a home win. Any joy at jumping above in-form Sevilla, however, was tarnished by Messi's injury, which will now rule him out of next weekend's Clasico against Real Madrid. A Barcelona club statement read: "Tests carried out on Leo Messi have confirmed that he has a fracture of the radial bone in his right arm. He will be out for approximately three weeks." It means Messi will also miss the Champions League match at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday, and probably the return trip to Italy on November 6, as well as league games against Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano in between. "It is clear it is a blow," Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said. "We know what he gives us and ..

Henry suffers defeat on Monaco return, PSG seal perfect 10

Thierry Henry suffered defeat in his first match as a head coach when his 10-man Monaco side slumped to a 2-1 loss at Strasbourg on Saturday to drop into the Ligue 1 relegation zone, while Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 10th straight victory to start their title defence. The principality club have failed to win in 11 games in all competitions since the opening weekend of the French top-flight season, and are only above bottom team Guingamp on goal difference. Monaco, who were runners-up to PSG last season, are now 24 points adrift of the reigning champions after they cruised to a 5-0 thrashing of Amiens at the Parc des Princes despite resting several key players. A dreadful error by Monaco's third-choice goalkeeper Seydou Sy gifted Strasbourg midfielder Adrien Thomasson an early opener, and substitute Samuel Grandsir was sent off midway through the second half. Lebo Mothiba doubled the advantage, and a late Youri Tielemans penalty was a mere consolation for the 2017 Ligue 1 ...
