Fulham owner Khan withdraws offer to buy Wembley

Shahid Khan has withdrawn his controversial offer to buy London's Wembley Stadium, the American businessman announced on Wednesday. The Football Association, Wembley's current owners, had come under fire from many within its own ranks for a plan to sell. English football's governing body had also investigated allegations of "systemic corruption" surrounding the proposed sale. Khan -- the owner of London-based Premier League side Fulham -- offered to buy the stadium for ?600 million ($800 million), in a deal ultimately worth ?900 million to the FA, with the money to be reinvested in grassroots football. And while senior FA figures were happy for the sale to go through, that lack of support from the wider game, evident at a meeting of the FA's governing council last week, was crucial to the decision of Khan to pull out. "At this moment, following last week's FA Council hearing, it appears there is no definitive mandate to sell Wembley and my current proposal, subsequently, would earn ...

Iran prosecutor says no repeat of women at football matches

Iran's prosecutor general said Wednesday there would be no repeat of women watching football matches inside stadiums, saying it would "lead to sin". The comments by Mohammad Jafar Montazeri came a day after around 100 women were allowed to watch their country take on Bolivia in a friendly at the national stadium -- an extremely rare step in the Islamic republic. "I object to the presence of women in Azadi Stadium yesterday. We are a Muslim state, we are Muslims," Montazeri said, according to the conservative Mehr news agency. "We will deal with any official who wants to allow women inside stadiums under any pretext," he added. Women have been barred from attending matches since the 1979 Islamic revolution, with clerics arguing they must be protected from the masculine atmosphere and sight of semi-clad men. They have also worried about the crush of men and women when leaving stadiums. There had been reports that women would also be allowed to attend the return match of the 2018 AFC ...

Grounded Abbas determined to continue rapid rise

Pakistan paceman Mohammad Abbas insisted on Wednesday he is confident his rapid success will not go to his head, saying a tough early life has helped him mature as a person. The 28-year-old worked as a welder and a leather factory labourer in Pakistan before his hard work in cricket paid dividends with a first-class debut in 2009. Abbas has been Pakistan's most successful bowler since making his Test debut in the West Indies last year, taking 54 wickets in nine-and-a-half games. Abbas sent Australia tumbling to 145 all out with figures of 5-33 on Wednesday, helping Pakistan to a 137-run first-innings lead in the second Test in Abu Dhabi. By close on the second day Pakistan were 144-2 in their second innings, stretching the advantage to 281 runs with eight wickets intact as they bid to win the two-match series 1-0. Abbas took seven wickets in the drawn first Test in Dubai last week. But success is unlikely to go to his head, like it did to Mohammad Zahid, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad ...

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah says he does not pay heed to opinions on his bowling action since he is comfortable with what he is doing. Experts such as former Pakistan pacer Aqib Javed feel his unusual bowling action makes him injury prone. "I don't focus on what the experts are saying or not. I focus on what has helped me and and I try to focus on my body and what do I need to keep myself fit. There is not a perfect action in cricket, tell me a bowler, like that, who has not got injured. I focus on how to improve my fitness level," 24-year-old Bumrah told a select group of reporters here. Bumrah, associated with ASICS, was in the city for a promotional event. England blames crammed calendar for choosing Lanka tour in rainy season

England on Wednesday blamed the crowded international cricket calendar for its decision to tour Sri Lanka during the rainy season as bad weather hit the third straight one-day international. England said the number of tours left it no "wriggle room" in organising a tour of the island currently in the grip of inter-monsoonal storms. Heavy rain also hit Wednesday's game in Kandy. England won the rain-disrupted second ODI on a faster-run rate and the first game was abandoned after just 15 overs. A warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI side on October 6 was also abandoned and England players and fans have become increasingly frustrated by rain interruptions during the two month tour. "In respect of touring Sri Lanka at this time of year: The Future Tours Programme is congested involving 13 boards whose schedules all interconnect, so there are unfortunately a number of tours that have to take place outside prime match-staging periods," England Cricket wrote on its Twitter page.
