Shaw starts with half-century, youngest Indian to do so on Test debut
Teenager Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a half-century on Test debut, living up to the hype about his talent and steering the team to 133 for one at lunch on day one of the series-opener against the West Indies here. He was not facing one of the best attacks but the 18-year-old Shaw gave ample evidence of his brilliance in an unbeaten 75 off 74 balls. Cheteshwar Pujara too looked at ease at the other end and was on 56 off 74 balls as India scored at 5.32 runs per over in the morning session comprising 25 overs. Shaw, who became the 293rd cricketer to represent India in Tests, showed supreme confidence from ball one, on which he offered a watchful leave. Hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr. hospitalised with breathing problems
Three-time Olympic gold medal winning hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr. has been admitted to a hospital here after he complained of difficulty in breathing. The legendary centre-forward, who is 94, is being treated at the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) of the PGI Hospital. A doctor attending to Singh told PTI on Thursday that an endotracheal tube has been inserted into his trachea. "The purpose of endotracheal intubation is to permit air to pass freely to and fro from the lungs in order to ventilate the lungs," the doctor said. His condition has shown mild improvement since Wednesday when he was admitted to the hospital. The doctors are closely monitoring the iconic player and he will continue to remain in the hospital for the time being. BFI President Ajay Singh to contest for position in world boxing body's EC
Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh is in fray to be Asia's representative in the AIBA Executive Committee when the under-fire world body goes to polls where controversial interim President Gafur Rakhimov is set for re-election to the top post. Singh's nomination was approved, along with 10 others from the Asian bloc, by the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) election committee chairman Jost Schmid on Wednesday in Lausanne. The elections are scheduled to be held on November 3 during the AIBA's annual conference in Moscow starting November 2. Currently, India does not have representation in the AIBA EC. Veteran technical official Kishan Narsi was the last Indian to find a place in the EC but his tenure ended after the BFI came into existence in 2015. Hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr has been admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here after he experienced difficulty in breathing. Balbir Sr, 94, is currently admitted in Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) of the PGIMER, Chandigarh. A doctor attending on Balbir Sr told PTI on Thursday that an endotracheal tube has been inserted, which serves as an open passage through the upper airway. Andrew Strauss announced on Wednesday that he is standing down as England's director of cricket following a period of compassionate leave.
