Chief coach Sjoerd Marijne is satisfied with the performance of the Indian women's hockey team at the Asian Games but says losing the opportunity to directly qualify for the 2020 Olympics is a big disappointment. "Of course it is the biggest disappointment. Now we might have to play another six matches to do that. Today it is a gold lost but the way team played throughout the tournament, it will be a silver won tomorrow," said Marijne after India lost 1-2 to Japan in the final. India, however, improved their medal colour from the last edition four years ago when they had secured bronze. "I feel a draw would have been a fair score of this match. Japan played well. They converted all their penalty corners (2 in total) and we didn't. They were better in the first quarter. We fought back well in the second half and we were really good in third quarter. The fourth quarter was even," said the Dutchman. "Overall, the girls can be proud of their performance. They had not reach the final for .

A golden dream unfulfilled for over 30 years remained just that in women's hockey but India equalled its best ever medal haul as sailors joined the assorted contributors to the country's tally at the 18th Asian Games today. On the penultimate day of competitions, the euphoria of track-and-field gold rush was far over but the momentum was certainly retained with a silver and a couple of bronze coming in from the sailing events. The women's hockey team, however, endured a heartbreak, albeit not as big as the men. They lost to Japan 1-2 in the final despite being favourites for gold. But it was still a step up from the bronze that came in the 2014 edition. The men will square off against Pakistan tomorrow for a bronze. The Indian position in the overall tally was a steady eighth with 65 medals, which is the same as 2010 -- the country's best ever Asiad show. The Indian women's hockey team failed to break its 36-year-old gold jinx after losing to Japan 1-2 in a keenly contested summit clash to settle for the silver medal at the 18th Asian Games here today. The loss will hurt the Indians badly as a gold here would have guaranteed a direct qualification in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Minami Shimizu and Motomori Kawamura scored for Japan through penalty corners in the 11th an 44th minute while Neha Goyal's field goal in the 25th minute was the lone strike for India, who were aiming to win their first Asiad gold since 1982. The Indians had qualified for the final of the Asian Games after a gap of 20 years gap, having beaten China in the semifinals. Ahead of the Olympics, Japanese hockey is on the right track with the women winning their maiden Asian Games title after finishing runners-up thrice. For Indian hockey, there was more disappointment after the fancied men's team failed to defend its gold following their loss to Malaysia in the ...
England enjoyed upperhand in the post lunch session despite dogged defiance from Cheteshwar Pujara as India reached 181 for 5 at tea on the second day of the fourth Test. Rishabh Pant (0) patiently left the deliveries outside the off-stump before Moeen Ali got one to straighten after pitching trapping him leg-before at stroke of tea. Pujara however batted in his customary style reaching 70 off 151 balls with nine boundaries to his credit. Pujara played in his usual style. He took time to settle down and waited patiently for the loose deliveries to dispatch it to boundary. Skipper Virat Kohli (46), once again looked good for a big score before Sam Curran managed to draw him forward inducing a thickish outside edge to Alastair Cook in the slip cordon. Kohli-Pujara added 92 runs for the third wicket after Shikhar Dhawan (23) and Lokesh Rahul (19) were dismissed cheaply by Stuart Broad (2/50). Kohli's 71-ball knock had six boundaries. However vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (11) would ...

Jaydev Unadkat cleaned up the tail to finish with impressive figures of 4 for 16 from 10.5 overs. Armed with a lead, India Green reached 21 for no loss when rain interrupted play at 4.28 ..

The 28-year-old Queenslander picked up three wickets against India B in the quadrangular series. Neser, who made his Australia debut earlier this year in the one-day international series in England, picked 39 wickets at an average of 21.84 in the Sheffield Shield. He also hopes that the pacers will get a bit of assistance. He also said it was tough for fast bowlers to bowl in spinner-friendly tracks in India. "It was tough conditions as a quick. It obviously favours spin over here in India. It took out a lot, very hard wickets to bowl on. But if you do bowl well, you do get rewarded," he said. Neser said going into the four-day matches, variations are not going to be
The Indian women hockey team's dream of reclaiming the gold at the Asian Games after 36 years remained unfulfilled as it lost 1-2 to Japan to settle for the silver medal here today. It was yet another heartbreak for Indian hockey, a day after the fancied men's team lost to Malaysia via penalty shoot-out in the semifinals. Coming into the match, the Indians were favourites to the title as they are ranked five places above Japan at ninth in the world rankings. But the Japanese matched India stick for stick and took the lead in the 11th minute when Minami Shimizu converted their first penalty corner. India, however, did not give up and pressed hard for the equaliser which came in the 25th minute when Neha Goyal deflected in a Navneet Kaur reverse hit pass, as both the teams went into the breather locked at 1-1. The Japanese, however, came out rejuvenated after the change of ends and restored their lead through another penalty corner conversion, by skipper Motomi Kawamura in the 44th ...
