Shorey, Vignesh steal the spotlight in Duleep Trophy match

India Blue (340) held an advantage over India Green (151 for 4) at the end of day two in the final league match of the Duleep Trophy at the NPR College ground here today. Talented Delhi batsman Dhruv Shorey missed out on a ton yet again as he fell to Atith Sheth on 93. However, his knock helped India Blue reach 340 in the first innings. In reply, India Green opener Priyank Panchal and Sudip Chaterjee were dismissed without scoring as the team slumped to 9 for 2 in the seventh over. Prashant Chopra (80) and Baba Indrajith (35) came to the team's rescue as they added 89 runs in a little over 35 overs. Chopra hit 10 boundaries in his knock while Indrajith, who made a century earlier in the tournament, proved the ideal foil to Chopra and helped India Green rebuild. Tamil Nadu medium-pacer K Vignesh underlined his potential, picking up a five-wicket haul, which was instrumental in India Blue being restricted to 340. The Faiz Fazal-led team looked set for a big score at 303 for

India at Asiad: 'Magic' Johnson, women's relay team burn track; hockey flops

There was no stopping the gold rush from track-and-field as India exceeded all expectations for its best Asian Games performance in close to seven decades but heartbreak in hockey took some sheen off the country's sprint past the previous edition's medal haul today. The seasoned Jinson Johnson and the women's 4x400m relay team were the joint stars with their golden show on the final day of the track-and-field competition in which India signed off seven gold, 10 silver and two bronze medals, the country's best haul since 1951. India surpassed its previous edition's overall tally of 57 by making it 59 with two more days of competition left. The country also took its gold tally to 13, two more than 2014. Johnson, who surprisingly lost the gold to compatriot Manjit Singh in the 800m, more than made up for that blip with a brilliant rally today. Johnson clocked 3:44.72sec to claim the top honours ahead of Iran's Amir Moradi, who turned in a timing of 3:45.62sec, his season's best ...

Curran, Moeen start rescue act as England reach 139/6 at tea on Day

Indian bowlers maintained their stranglehold despite an unbroken 53-run stand for the seventh wicket between all-rounders Moeen Ali and Sam Curran as England reached 139 for six at tea on the opening day of the fourth Test. Moeen (30 batting) and Curran (27 batting) carried a rescue act after Mohammed Shami's (2/38) double blow left England tottering at 86 for 6 at one stage. The second session proved to be slightly better for the hosts as it yielded 82 runs for the loss of two wickets. Post lunch, Jos Buttler (24) was out caught at slip by skipper Virat Kohli off Shami's bowling. Ben Stokes (23) continued to defend stoically, lasting 79 deliveries. Shami bowled brilliantly, continuing from where he left off in the morning session. And it brought him reward when he trapped Stokes lbw coming round the wicket. It was a sharp inswinger that was hitting the leg-middle. Curran and Ali then came together, and held fort until the tea break. They showed a lot of patience, in particular Curran

The Indian 4x400m women's relay team today clinched its fifth consecutive Asian Games gold medal to maintain a remarkable domination in this event while Jinson Johnson won the men's 1500m final race as the country produced its best ever show in athletics since the inaugural 1951 edition. Bangladesh axe Sabbir, Anamul from Asia Cup squad

Bangladesh have dropped batsmen Sabbir Rahman and Anamul Haque from their 15-man squad for the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates next month, a cricket official said today. Middle-order Sabbir and opener Anamul paid the price for poor performances during Bangladesh's win over the West Indies in a three-match one-day international series last month. Sabbir, who concluded a six-month ban from domestic cricket in June for assaulting a fan, accumulated just 27 runs in the series while Anamul made 33. "Sabbir's form is really bad, so it was difficult to keep him in the squad. His selection had nothing to do with his disciplinary problems," Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)'s chief selector Minhajul Abedin said. "We dropped Anamul as he could not fulfil our expectations in West Indies," he added. All-rounder Ariful Haque and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Mithun were picked instead for the squad. Ariful has played six Twenty20 internationals but is yet to make his debut in other formats. ...

Former official Okeyo handed life ban over Nike corruption: IAAF

Top athletics official David Okeyo of Kenya was handed a life ban from the sport's world ruling body on Monday for corrupt practices, the IAAF announced. Okeyo, a former Secretary-General and Vice President of Athletics Kenya (AK) as well as a member of the IAAF Council, was found guilty of diverting funds from a contract between AK and sports giant Nike to his "own personal benefit". Okeyo had been provisionally suspended by the IAAF in November 2015, along with two other Kenyan officials, former AK president Isaiah Kiplagat, who died in August 2016, and AK treasurer Joseph Kinyua. Okeyo has also been accused of extorting money from athletes in relation to anti-doping procedures. A decision on those charges has yet to be made by the IAAF's ethics commission.
