Aditi lies way behind at Marathon Classic

Aditi Ashok is in danger of missing the cut at the Marathon Classic after she made a forgettable start with a four-over 75 in the opening round of the tournament on the LPGA Tour. Aditi had a nightmarish start with four bogeys in first five holes and she had two more on 14th and 15th to be six-over. She had her only birdies of the day on 17th and 18th to turn in 75 to lie T-117. Meanwhile, Thai girl Thidappa Suwannapura (65) took sole lead as she had a sensational back nine with seven birdies and two bogeys in her round. Defending champion In-Kyung Kim was one of four players who took advantage of the morning's calm conditions, carding a five-under par, 66 to get a fine start. The others were Yani Tseng, Jacqui Concolino and Katelyn Dambaugh. They were later joined at 66 by Caroline Hedwall and In Gee Chun. Later in the day, Thai girl, Thidappa Suwannapura (65) overtook them all to take sole lead. Kim started her day on the back nine where she made five birdies over a six-hole ...

Perera puts Sri Lanka on top in 1st South Africa Test

Sri Lankan spinners led by Dilruwan Perera wreaked havoc to put South Africa in deep trouble at 86 for six on day two of the first first Test in Galle today. Perera claimed three wickets including Hashim Amla for 15 with his wily off-spin to rattle South Africa's top and middle order after the visitors started the day on 4-1 in response to the hosts' 287. Skipper Faf du Plessis, on 22, and Vernon Philander, on 16, were batting when lunch was taken with the visitors still trailing by 201 runs in the first innings. Veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who got Aiden Markram for nought on Thursday, removed nightwatchman Keshav Maharaj for three in the third over of the day to set the tone for the hosts' domination in the morning session. Perera soon sent Dean Elgar packing on eight and struck twice again to reduce the visitors to 51-6. Du Plessis and Philander then put together an unbeaten 35-run stand as Sri Lanka continued to put pressure with spin from either end. Left-arm wrist ...

Atwal begins with 2-under 69 at PGA

Indian golfer Arjun Atwal made a fine recovery on the back nine to bring home a card of two-under 69 and lie tied 56th after the first round of the John Deere Classic here. In only this third PGA Tour start this season, Atwal, who got a late entry into the John Deere Classic, was two-over for the front nine, before four birdies pulled him back to two-under at the TPC Deere Run here. He had missed the cut at Sanderson Farms and Corales Puntacana earlier in the season. His playing partner and friend, Daniel Chopra, shot one-over 72 with three birdies and four bogeys. Steve Wheatcroft, who is way down in the FedExCup standings at beyond 200, was three-under through first 12 holes and then ran off six straight birdies to finish his opening-round at nine-under 62. He was one shot clear of Michael Kim (63) while Nick Taylor and Johnson Wagner were among four players at 64 each as Joel Dahmen and Andres Romero also shot 64 in the tougher afternoon conditions. Early starters had a soft ...

Kuldeep has exposed area of our game we need to improve on: Morgan

England captain Eoin Morgan says his team must improve against chinaman Kuldeep Yadav if it is to bounce back in the three-match ODI series against India. England batsmen have been at all sea while facing Kuldeep who has picked up 11 wickets in the two T20s and one ODI against the hosts. He finished with a career-best six for 25 in the series opener here yesterday. When asked to explain the Kuldeep phenomenon so far, the skipper replied, It is about identifying when he bowls well. The two grounds we've played at have offered more turn than other grounds. Today, like at Old Trafford, he turned it more than any other spinner in the game and similar to Cardiff and the way we adapted between the two games, conditions change. I think Lord's will be similar to Cardiff in that regard so the shift will be important, but that doesn't paper over the fact that we need to get better at playing him. He is very good and there is no getting around that. He exposes an area of our game that we need to

India eye series win, England face 'Kuldeep conundrum'

A high-on-confidence India look set to wrap up another series on the UK tour unless England find a way to tackle the marauding Kuldeep Yadav when the two teams clash in the second and penultimate ODI at Lord's here tomorrow. It is a short turn-around from the first ODI at Trent Bridge, as also from the T20I series that finished 2-1 in India's favour Sunday. Perhaps the game was scheduled for Saturday, keeping in mind the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday. But, with only a day's gap between the two matches, it hasn't worked out in England's favour who have their task cut out once again after going down by eight wickets in the series opener. In conditions resembling those in Manchester, in terms of a dry pitch, the English batsmen failed to comprehend Kuldeep's wrist spin. Like at Old Trafford, he was also helped by the breeze blowing across the ground and gained drift, bamboozling the batsmen to pick his best figures in ODI cricket. Unlike in the T20I series, England do not have the ...

India U-16s beat Thailand's Buriram United U-17 team 2-0

The Indian U-16 football team today notched up a comprehensive 2-0 win over Buriram United FC U-17 during its exposure tour of Thailand. An early goal by Bhuvnesh in the 3rd minute and Rohit Danu's 83rd minute strike led the Indian colts to an easy win in a match largely dominated by them, both in terms of possession and chances created. The signs of danger for the opponents were there from the first minute as Bhuvnesh tapped home a Givson cross from the flanks in the 3rd minute to give India an early lead. India led 1-0 at half-time and a flurry of goal scoring opportunities came in the second half, although Bibiano Fernandes's boys could only convert one of the chances. In the 53rd minute, Ridge De' Mello's bullet header was saved by the opposition custodian and shortly after Thoiba's rasping shot earned a top quality save from the opposition custodian. In the 80th minute Bekey's shot went inches wide of the goal but three minutes later, Rohit Danu slotted home with ease from inside

Soccer headers may lead to balance problems: Study

Soccer players who head the ball often are more likely to have balance problems than those who do not head the ball as often, according to a study. "Soccer headers are repetitive subconcussive head impacts that may be associated with problems with thinking and memory skills and structural changes in the white matter of the brain," said John Jeka from the University of Delaware in the US. "But the effect of headers on balance control has not been studied," Jeka said. For the study, 20 soccer players recruited from the community in Newark in the US took a balance test where they walked along a foam walkway with their eyes closed under two conditions: with galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) and without GVS. For GVS, electrodes placed behind each ear stimulate the nerves that send messages from the balance system in the inner ear to the brain. The stimulator can make you feel like you are moving when you are not. In this case, it made participants feel like they were falling sideways, .

Thai 'Wild Boars' return to training after teammates' rescue

At the first training session since their teammates went missing in a Thai cave, the remaining "Wild Boars" said they cannot wait to see their friends back on the pitch. The stunning rescue of 12 boys and their coach earlier this week spurred jubilation in Thailand and made the team famous worldwide. Though the group are healthy and in good spirits, they remain in an isolation ward waiting for the medical all-clear after more than two weeks stuck deep underground in an environment where they could have been exposed to nasty diseases. Back in the boys' hometown of Mae Sai their teammates had not practised together since the group went missing, as the area's residents kept an anxious vigil around the cave's entrance. The remaining team members waited for news that the rescue had succeeded before returning to training on Thursday evening, on a field where they are eager to see their friends again soon. "I want to tell the guys that I miss them and that I want to hug them," Wild Boars ...
