Solid second round for Lahiri sees him rise to T-11 at Travelers

Anirban Lahiri produced another solid round of 3-under 67 to position himself at Tied-11, three behind a trio of leaders, at the midway stage of the Traveler's Championship, here. The 30-year-old Indian ace, still looking for his breakthrough win on the PGA Tour, is now 6-under 134 after 36 holes. Lahiri, whose last win came in February 2015 at Hero Indian Open, had four birdies against one bogey. He hit better on the first day than the second, when the conditions were easier but the pin positions were tougher at the TPC River Highlands. Brian Harman, who was third in 2015, shot a 4-under 66 to go with his first round 64 to take a share of the three-way lead with Russell Henley (65-66) and first round co-leader, Zach Johnson (63-68) at nine-under 131. I have generally hit it good the last two days, pretty solid, though I didn't drive it as well today. Yesterday, when I drove really well. Federer beats Kudla to reach 12th Halle final

Roger Federer booked his 12th career final at the ATP Halle grass tournament on Saturday, beating qualifier Denis Kudla 7-6 (7/1), 7-5. The Swiss needs to win the title on Sunday - it would be his tenth at the event - to remain world number one heading into Wimbledon. He will face either Spanish fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut or Croatian Borna Coric. Federer's win was his 20th in a row on grass, dating to June, 2017. Federer needed just under 90 minutes to get the job done and hold off the 109th-ranked Kulda, who had not lost a set going into the semi-final. Federer is back in a familiar spot in Halle, which models its Centre court after its namesake at the All England club, as he works to fine-tune with a Wimbledon title defence starting a week from Monday. The 36-year-old has reached the final four in each of his last 14 Halle appearances. Taming Kulda was no easy task, with Federer losing a break after taking an early 2-0 lead. The first set went into a tiebreaker where the ...

'Groundbreaking' Mauresmo appointed French Davis Cup captain

Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo today became the first woman appointed to captain France's Davis Cup team. Mauresmo succeeds Yannick Noah next year, the French tennis federation (FFT) announced. In contrast, Julien Benneteau, who retires after the US Open in September, will take the reins of France's side in the women's equivalent the Fed Cup. Mauresmo, who turns 39 on July 5, was captain of the Fed Cup team in 2015 and 2016, and led them from the second division to the final of the competition, which they lost to the Czech Republic in Strasbourg. At a press conference to unveil the two captains, FFT president Bernard Giudicelli hailed a "completely groundbreaking choice" of putting "a woman in charge of French men's tennis." Mauresmo is unique among French players of the modern era. She is the only one to be ranked No. 1 in the world (for 39 weeks in 2004 and 2006). She also won two majors -- the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006 -- as well as the Fed Cup, in ...

Cracking art: the Vietnam craftsman making World Cup mascots from eggshells

Football scarves, shirts and... eggshell art? World Cup swag has taken a quirky turn in Vietnam where a retired schoolteacher is making mascot memorabilia from hollowed-out eggs, meticulously crafted by hand. Nguyen Thanh Tam, 67, spends hours every day making the models, driven by his football fanaticism -- a passion shared by millions across Vietnam glued to the World Cup since the tournament kicked off in Russia earlier this month. Most of his tiny statues are of tournament mascot Zabivaka, a wolf in sports goggles kicking a football, and he has models of football heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the works. "Over the past few years, I have been spending my time making football mascots with eggshells as a way for me to show my love for football," Tam told AFP, speaking before a basket of eggs in his Ho Chi Minh City home. Though not widespread in Vietnam, using eggshells in art is not unheard of: traditional lacquer works often feature inlaid eggshell in lieu of white ...

Desire to protect fans lead to football hooliganism

The desire to protect and defend other fans is one of the main reasons behind the consistency of football hooliganism. The Oxford University has confirmed it in a recent study.Previous research has linked sports-related hooliganism to 'social maladjustment'.The study which tracked 465 Brazilian fans and other hooligans, found that members of super-fan groups are not particularly dysfunctional outside of football and that football-related violence is more of an isolated behaviour.Martha Newson, a lead researcher said, "Our study shows that hooliganism is not a random behaviour. Members of hooligan groups are not necessarily dysfunctional people outside of the football community; violent behaviour is almost entirely focused on those regarded as a threat- usually rival fans or sometimes the police.""Being in a super fan group of people who care passionately about football instantly ups the ante and is a factor in football violence. Not only because these fans tend to be more committed to .
