Pakistan's Amir strikes on return against Ireland

Mohammad Amir gave Pakistan a boost ahead of their series with England by taking two wickets in quick succession as he returned to the fray against Ireland on Monday despite a troublesome knee injury. The Pakistan spearhead went off just 3.2 overs into his spell during the second innings of Ireland's inaugural Test on Sunday with a recurrence of a "chronic" left knee problem. It was a worrying sign for Pakistan, who next play a warm-up match against Leicestershire (May 19-20) before facing England in a two-Test series, with back-to-back fixtures at Lord's (May 24-28) and Headingley (June 1-5) leaving little time for rest and recovery. Following-on, Ireland started the fourth day on 64 without loss. Amir did not come into the attack until Monday's ninth over, with the hosts 81 for two after Ed Joyce had been run out by Faheem Ashraf and Andrew Balbirnie lbw for his second nought of the match to Mohammad Abbas. Amir was not operating at top speed to begin with on Monday -- often the ...

Amir at the double as Pakistan strengthen grip on Ireland Test

Pakistan paceman Mohammad Amir took two wickets as the tourists continued to dominate in Ireland's inaugural men's Test at Malahide on Monday. Ireland, following on, were 123 for four at lunch on the fourth day -- still 57 runs adrift of Pakistan's total of 310 for nine declared. After collapsing to 130 all out in their first innings, Ireland resumed on a highly creditable 64 without loss. But they lost four wickets in Monday's first session, with left-arm quick Amir -- who had both openers dropped during a brief spell on Sunday before going off with a knee problem -- enjoying a burst of two wickets for no runs in six balls. It was a heartening sign for Pakistan, both in terms of winning this match and ahead of their upcoming two- Test series in England that will feature back-to-back fixtures at Lord's (May 24-28) and Headingley (June 1-5). Amir, however, repeatedly limped around the field on Monday when he was not bowling. Ireland resumed with veteran opener Ed Joyce, arguably their .

Jehan begins season with podium at Pau

Young Indian racer Jehan Daruvala began his 2018 campaign in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with a podium finish in Race 3 of the season opener here. Jehan had created history last year when he became the first Indian to win a race in the FIA F3 European Championship at Nuremburg in Germany. The first round of the 2018 season was held on the famous street circuit of Pau in Southern France. Jehan qualified just 0.29 seconds off the quickest, but the extremely competitive grid meant that Jehan would start seventh. In the next qualifying session, Jehan was supremely quick. He was all set to bag pole position but a slower car in front of him meant Jehan was blocked and he qualified down in seventh and fifth for the remaining races. The highlight of Jehan's weekend was when he made a brilliant start from fifth on a completely wet circuit, in Race 3. The Indian teenager climbed two places before corner 1 and thereafter made no mistakes in the treacherous conditions around the tight

Mancini to sign Italy contract Tuesday - report

Roberto Mancini has agreed a deal with the Italian football federation (FIGC) to take over as national coach and will sign his contract on Tuesday, according to reports in Italy. The 53-year-old former Manchester City manager quit as Zenit Saint Petersburg coach on Sunday, saying he now felt free to open talks with Italy. Sky Sports Italia reported on Monday that Mancini has now agreed a two-year deal and will sign a contract in Rome on Tuesday.
