Hafeez allowed to bowl in Int'l cricket

The ICC has found bowling action of Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez to be legal and the off-spinner can now resume bowling in international cricket. On April 17, Hafeez underwent a re-assessment of his bowling action at the Loughborough University, where it was revealed that the amount of elbow extension in his bowling action was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations. The Match Officials are still at liberty to report Hafeez in the future if they believe he is displaying a suspect action and not reproducing the legal action from the reassessment. To assist the Match Officials, they will be provided with images and video footage of the bowler's remodeled legal bowling action. Meanwhile, the Windies' Ronsford Beaton has failed an independent assessment and is suspended from bowling in international cricket. The fast bowler had been reported with a suspect bowling action during the second ODI against New Zealand in Christchurch on December

de Grandhomme's cameo takes RCB to 167 for 7

Mumbai Indians bowlers exploited a difficult batting track but leaked a few runs towards to end to allow Royal Challengers Banaglore post 167 for seven in an IPL match, the outcome of which will decide their survival in the League. Captain Virat Kohli (32) and Brendon McCullum (37) added 60 quick runs in the middle overs to help the side recover from a slow start but Hardik Pandya (3/28) scalped three batsmen and effected a run out to stop the hosts from running away with a big total. Colin de Grandhomme (23 from 10) hit three sixes in the last over, bowled by fellow New Zealander Mitchell McClenaghan to provide a flourishing finish to the innings. Opener Manan Vohra (45) played a useful knock at the top before being trapped by Mayank Markande. As the wicket offered turned and pacers too generated pace, Mumbai Indians succeeded in straight-jacketing the RCB batsmen. Since it had rained, there was dampness in the wicket, causing the ball to come a slow on the bat. Vohra broke the ...

I will recuse if my son is selected for Bihar Ranji team: Aditya Verma

Aditya Verma, secretary of unrecognised Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB), today made it clear that he will recuse himself from cricket administration if his son gets selected to play for the state in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting September. Verma, who has been the original petitioner in the 2013 spot-fixing case, is expected to play a major role when unified Bihar cricket body takes shape but the hindrance would be the cricketing ambitions of his son Lakhan Raja. With Bihar back in the national mix, it is expected that Lakhan will be back in his home state with an eye on first-class cricket. "I know that there could be an issue of conflict of interest if my son Lakhan Raja plays for Bihar. Obviously, if he is selected for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, I will recuse myself from cricket administration. However if he plays for a different state, I think I can continue as an official in my home state body," Verma told PTI today. Lakhan is a left-handed opening batsman and part-time ...

SC may reconsider one-state, one-vote policy relating to MCA, CCI

The vexatious recommendation of Justice R M Lodha panel on one-state, one-vote policy may be reconsidered by the Supreme Court which said it may look at the only aspect relating to loss of full-time membership of some cricket bodies. One of the Justice Lodha panel's recommendations, which was later approved by the apex court in its 2016 verdict, was that there would be one cricket association, having full time membership and voting rights in the BCCI, in one state. This had led to the loss of permanent membership and voting rights to iconic bodies like Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Cricket Club of India (CCI), Vidarbha Cricket Association, Baroda Cricket Association and Saurashtra Cricket Association. These bodies are in Maharashtra and Gujarat respectively which have separate permanent membership of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said so far as the one-state, one-vote policy with regard to north-eastern states was ...

Mancini to become new Italy coach - reports

Roberto Mancini has reached an agreement to become the next Italy coach, according to multiple media reports today. The Zenit St Petersburg manager met with the Italian FA sub-commissioner Alessandro Costacurta and team manager Gabriele Oriali for over two hours in Rome on Monday evening. It was reported over the weekend that Carlo Ancelotti had turned down the job, and both Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere dello Sport said on Tuesday that Mancini had agreed to take over and help revive the fortunes of the national side. Gazzetta said the federation had offered the former Manchester City manager a two-year contract until 2020 worth four million euros ($4.8million) a year. "Coaching the national team would be prestigious and a source of pride for me because Italy are one of the most important teams in the world," Mancini told Italian radio on Monday. Mancini is expected to take over the national team after the final round of Russian domestic fixtures on May 13 and before the May 20 ...

Veteran Williams threatens to bare all if he reaches world final

Veteran two-time world snooker champion Mark Williams vowed if he reaches this year's final to appear naked before the world's media. The 43-year-old -- champion in 2000 and 2003 -- made the pledge after seeing off journeyman Englishman Robert Milkins 13-7 in their second round clash. Williams will play Ali Carter -- conqueror of five-time champion 'Rocket' Ronnie O'Sullivan in the second round -- in what is the Welshman's eighth quarter-final at the championships at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. "I would come in here naked and do the press conference," said Williams, bidding to reach his first world championship semi-final since 2011. Williams was in a jocular mood remarking he would do his best not to earn a slap from Carter, who was involved in a heated exchange with O'Sullivan during their second round match. "I might have to walk sideways back to my chair a couple of times in case he gives me a dig, but apart from that I'll be fine," joked Williams. Williams said he could ...

Roma counting on Dzeko-inspired miracle against Liverpool

Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco said today he is counting on another Edin Dzeko-inspired miracle against Liverpool to reach the Champions League final. Trailing 5-2 after the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, Roma need to score at least three goals at the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow to reach the May 26 final in Kiev. Dzeko scored a crucial, late away goal in the 4-1 quarter-final first leg defeat at Barcelona and the opening goal of Roma's 3-0 second leg win at the Stadio Olimpico that saw the Italians through on away goals. The Bosnian handed Roma another lifeline with an 81st strike after Liverpool had romped to a five-goal lead at Anfield last week, Diego Perotti adding a precious second from the spot four minutes later to keep Roma's final hopes alive. "Players with his (Dzeko) qualities must be decisive as (Mohamed) Salah was in the first leg," said Di Francesco. Former Roma forward Salah tore through his former club at Anfield, scoring twice and setting up two more ...

Serena made to wait over Wimbledon seeding

Wimbledon chiefs have admitted they will hold an internal debate to clarify if seven-time champion Serena Williams can be seeded at Wimbledon. Williams is currently 449th in the WTA rankings after taking time off to get married and have her first child last year. Following the difficult birth of daughter Alexis Olympia, which left the American star fearing she might die after developing blood clots, Serena has played only two singles tournaments. The 36-year-old lost to her sister Venus in the last 32 at Indian Wells and was beaten by Naomi Osaka in the first round in Miami. However, Miami Open tournament director James Blake said recently that the 23-time Grand Slam winner had been "punished" for wanting to start a family. The WTA provides players returning from injury lay-offs or pregnancy with a 'protected ranking' that can be used to enter tournaments, but not for seeding at those tournaments. Players can enter eight events using the ranking they had when they left, including for .

Wimbledon warns players over injury withdrawals

Wimbledon officials warned players today they face losing prize money if they withdraw after competing with an existing injury and are not perceived to have given maximum effort. The All England Club will introduce the "50:50" rule at this year's Wimbledon in an attempt to prevent injury withdrawals in the opening round of the men's and women's singles events. Several players were widely criticised last year when they played in first-round matches at Wimbledon, despite being clearly unfit, in order to claim the prize money for losing at that stage. There were a total of seven mid-match withdrawals in the 2017 tournament. With an increased purse of USD 53,000 on offer to first-round losers this year, tournament chiefs are keen to clamp down on the issue. Players will now be able to claim 50 percent of their first-round prize money if they withdraw on site by the Thursday before the start of the main draw. An injured player's replacement would take the other 50 percent of the prize ...

Wimbledon backs plan to clamp down on tennis corruption

Wimbledon bosses have backed plans to restructure the lower levels of tennis in a bid to clamp down on match-fixing involving players struggling to make a living from the sport. A recent 'Independent Review of Integrity in Tennis' report said the lower reaches of the men's and women's game provided a fertile breeding ground for betting-related corruption. The problems stem from too many players in the lower reaches, such as the Futures and Challenger circuits, not earning enough to make a living, coupled with the rise of online betting. A total of 14.5 percent of players who responded to the survey said they had first-hand knowledge of match-fixing but the panel found no evidence of top-level players being implicated in corruption. The report recommended restructuring of the professional game with a significant reduction in tournaments deemed "professional", discontinuing the sale of official live scoring data at lower-level tennis and eliminating betting sponsorship in the ...

Hindustan FC beat Delhi Dynamos B

A late goal from Asifullah Khan helped Hindustan FC earn all three points for a 2-1 win over Delhi Dynamos 'B' in their I-League Second Division Group A clash at the Ambedkar Stadium today. Seiminmang Manchong had put Dynamos back in level terms with 15 minutes left on the clock but Khan's late strike meant Delhi Dynamos' unbeaten run in the 2nd Division came to an end. Head Coach Fran Perez gave Sukhadev Patil a start in Dynamos goal while Surya Tirkey, Yagya Kapoor and Simranjeet Singh all came into the starting line-up. It was the hosts who had the better of the early exchanges as they dominated the play, but Delhi's defense was upto the task, not allowing the Hindustan FC attackers a sight on goal. Against the run of play, Mayank Deswal could have handed Dynamos the lead but his effort from close range was denied by the Hindustan FC custodian. With a minute left in the first half, a mistake by Dynamos goalkeeper Sukhadev Patil handed Thomyo a clear sight on goal and he made no ...
