Chris Gayle has proved to be quite a bargain buy for Kings XI Punjab in the ongoing Indian Premier League but co-owner Ness Wadia today revealed that the team almost lost the destructive opener at the auction, thinking it had run out of cash. Gayle had unexpectedly gone unsold twice before KXIP bought him for his base price of Rs 2 crore. Wadia explained how the franchise got lucky with the Jamaican. "We had only Rs 2.1 crore left and if we had bid for Chris earlier (at the auction) and another team came up with a counter bid, we did not have the money to buy him. Luckily, no other team bid for him and we were more than happy to get third time lucky," Wadia told PTI. KXIP, who had retained just one player in Axar Patel before the auction, spent big bucks in their bid to build a team for the future. Gayle was their final buy and the Rs 2 crore they spent on him meant they were left with just Rs 1o lakh, using almost their entire purse of Rs 67.5 crore. Two months later, Gayle has ...

Outgoing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger lamented a familiar defensive lapse as his side failed to cash in on a man advantage for over 80 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. Antoine Griezmann's away goal eight minutes from time is a body blow to Wenger's hopes of bowing out after 22 years on a high in the final on May 16, and Arsenal's chances of playing Champions League football next season. Sime Vrsaljko's early red card handed the Gunners the initiative, however, they were made to rue a host of missed chances before and after Alexandre Lacazette headed them in front on the hour mark. "I feel we produced the performance we wanted to produce, but the result is not in line with the performance," said Wenger. "We can only look at ourselves for tonight's result because 1-0 is a perfect result at home. It was up to us not to make a mistake...it is a story we have seen before." Tensions are running high as Juventus travel to Inter Milan tomorrow in a game which could prove decisive for the champions' hopes of a seventh straight Serie A title. Massimiliano Allegri's side are being pushed all the way for the Scudetto by Napoli with their lead cut to just one point after last weekend's 1-0 defeat by their title rivals in Turin. Juventus have 85 points from 34 games with Napoli on 84 with four games to play this season. The champions face Inter, Bologna, Roma and Verona before the end of the season, as well as AC Milan in the Italian Cup final. Mohamed Salah's brilliance has taken most of the focus away from Liverpool's midfield concerns as they seek to finish a memorable season in style. Jurgen Klopp's side host Stoke City in the Premier League tomorrow with confidence sky-high after Tuesday's spectacular 5-2 victory over Roma in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. Salah produced a masterclass against his former club, scoring twice and providing two assists as he took his club total for the season to 43. Four more goals would equal Ian Rush's Liverpool record for goals in one season, set in 1983-84. Yet while there was much talk after the game of the Egypt winger being a serious contender for the Ballon d'Or, there was also concern about the season-ending injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, which could have serious implications for Liverpool's ambitions. The England international will miss the World Cup after suffering knee ligament damage in making a challenge on Aleksandar Kolarov, and his absence leaves ...

Riding on wonder spinner Rashid Khan's brilliant effort, Sunrisers Hyderabad produced an inspired bowling display to eke out a fighting 13-run win over in-form Kings XI Punjab in a low-scoring IPL match here today. The 36-year-old who last played at a World Cup with Sweden in 2006, retired from the Swedish team after the 2016 European Championship. He said last month he wanted to concentrate on settling into his new life in Major League .
An interim agreement between Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the SA Cricketers' Association (SACA) was announced today, averting a stand-off between the country's players and officials. The agreement was announced five days before the expiry of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which covers players' remuneration and commercial rights. Under the interim agreement, players will get an increase of six percent in their pay from May 1 until the conclusion of a new MOU. A joint statement from CSA and SACA came a week after it appeared a conflict was looming between the two bodies. The statement said a deadline of June 30 had been agreed for the conclusion of a new deal, with dates set in May and June for negotiations. Cricket South Africa committed to maintaining a revenue share model with players and also agreed that a new commercial rights agreement would be at least as favourable to players as the existing agreement. SACA chief executive Tony Irish, who last week warned that uncertainty
Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard is in contention for his first managerial post having made the short list for the role at Scottish giants Rangers, British media reported today. The 37-year-old -- capped 114 times and a member of the Liverpool side that won the 2005 Champions League -- is presently the academy coach at Liverpool after rejecting the advances of lower league MK Dons when he hung up his boots in 2016. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Rangers chairman Dave King attended Liverpool's 5-2 humbling of Roma in their Champions League semi-final first leg clash on Tuesday. Former Rangers manager and now Scotland national coach Alex McLeish told the BBC he believes that while Gerrard has things still to learn he already possessed some of the qualities required for such a post. "Steven knows the game inside out and with regard to coaching, I am sure he has got some things to learn," said McLeish. "He won't have all the answers to that but I am certain he
