London's Crystal Palace given green light to redevelop Selhurst Park stadium

South London's Croydon Council on Friday gave Crystal Palace Football Club its approval to go ahead with the redevelopment of its home ground, Selhurst Park, and convert it into a state-of-the-art football-coliseum with a capacity of over 34,000 spectators.

Djokovic to continue injury comeback in Barcelona

Former world number one Novak Djokovic will continue his comeback from injury at the Barcelona Open next week, tournament organisers announced today. The Serbian was beaten in three sets by Austrian Dominic Thiem in the Monte Carlo Masters third round on Thursday, but said he was pain-free for the first time in two years. Djokovic chose Barcelona instead of the event in Budapest. It will be only his fifth tournament since Wimbledon last July after lengthy spells out with a right elbow injury. The 30-year-old, who is working with former long-time coach Marian Vajda for the first time in a year, is now ranked 13 in the world. The 12-time Grand Slam champion has only played the Barcelona Open once before, losing in the 2006 first round as an 18-year-old world number 178.

Gurpreet wins gold, over-aged Sanjay disqualified at Junior Federation Cup

Distance runner Sanjay Kumar of Tamil Nadu was disqualified today after he was found over-aged following his second place finish in the 5000m for U20 Men on the inaugural day of 16th Federation Cup National Junior Athletics Championships here today. Haryana's 3000m Junior National Champion Gurpreet Singh won the event in 14 minutes 46.51 secs. Last month, he had finished eighth in the senior Federation cup at Patiala clocking 14:37.97. In the current season only two other Asian runners, Taku Miura of Japan (14:21.81) and Chinese Xinxin Wang (14:27.47) have been credited with faster timings than the Haryana lad. Following Sanjay Kumar's disqualification, UP's Ajay Kumar Bind and Maharashtra's Dinesh Kumar, who clocked 14:53:65 seconds and 14:59:44 seconds respectively at Nehru Stadium here, won the silver and bronze medals. Seasoned all-rounder Shane Watson slammed his third IPL century as Chennai Super Kings moved to their new 'home' by posting a challenging 204 for five against Rajasthan Royals, here today. Cricket Assn of Bihar moves SC seeking contempt against BCCI officials

The Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) today moved the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against some office-bearers of BCCI for not complying with its order allowing Bihar to participate in Ranji Trophy and other national championships. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said it will hear the plea of CAB, which sought contempt action against BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer Rahul Johri and its acting president C K Khanna, at a later stage. "We have already passed the order in the main BCCI matter. We will see to it later," the bench said when the counsel for CAB sought urgent listing of the contempt plea.
