Argentina's Racing Club de Avellaneda beat Brazil's Vasco da Gama 4-0 to lead Group E of the Copa Libertadores football tournament.
The BCCI is all set to issue a diktat for Indian Railways, sating that only permanent employees will be allowed to play in the Board's U-19 tournament - Cooch Behar Trophy. There is a distinct possibility that Indian sports' biggest recruiters will have to disband their U-19 team if the BCCI technical committee recommendation is ratified by the general body. During a recent technical committee meeting in Kolkata, its members found that Railways is the only BCCI unit whose junior team (U-19) comprised children of employees. "The technical committee has recommended that from now on, any institutional unit taking part in any BCCI tournament (age-group to senior level tournament) can only select employees," a senior BCCI official and technical committee member told PTI today. "We have received complaints that Railways' employees' kids are playing U-19 Nationals. This was not the idea," the senior official said. When Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) secretary Rekha Yadav was ...
Dropping shooting from 2022 Commonwealth Games will be a huge setback for India, especially for its young shooters, said the country's only individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra. "No doubt, it will be a huge setback for the country and our shooters. It will hit hard on the up and coming shooters," Bindra said at the sidelines of a felicitation ceremony of India's Olympic medallists by the visiting International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach. The event was organised by the Indian Olympic Association at a city hotel last night. "Shooting is an optional sport and they (Birmingham organisers) say they don't have the facilities to host shooting events. Had Durban (South Africa) hosted the 2022 CWG, shooting would have been there," he added. Durban was to originally host the 2022 CWG but it later expressed its inability to host the Games due to financial problems. The Commonwealth Games Federation later awarded the 2022 CWG to Birmingham. The Birmingham Organising Committee

Mohamed Salah has made clear to Jurgen Klopp he wants as many games as possible to try to create Liverpool goalscoring history as they prepare to travel to bottom of the Premier League table West Bromwich Albion. It means the Egypt winger is reluctant to be rested for tomorrow's match at The Hawthorns, even though Reds manager Klopp has to pick a team with Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma in mind. Salah became only the third player to score 40 goals in a season for Liverpool when he struck in last weekend's 3-0 win over Bournemouth. He is now just seven short of equalling the all-time club record set by Ian Rush, who struck 47 goals for Liverpool in the 1983/84 season. Klopp, though, must consider whether to rest Salah for the West Brom fixture, given the match comes three days before the meeting with the winger's former club Roma. Klopp decided to leave out several key players for the Premier League match against Merseyside derby rivals Everton on April 7,
Manchester United head into tomorrow's FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur needing to keep their hopes of silverware alive to save their season. However, Spurs are just as hungry as they aim to end a decade-long wait for a trophy and confirm their consistent improvement under Mauricio Pochettino. Jose Mourinho's men tightened their grip on the Premier League runners-up spot this week but a title battle with champions Manchester City never materialised and they limped out of the Champions League in the first knockout stage. To add to the frustrations of the beleaguered boss, speculation over the future of ?89 million ($127 million) midfielder Paul Pogba has dominated headlines in recent weeks. Often deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho this season, Pogba showed what he is capable of by scoring twice to help United temporarily delay City's title party in a thrilling 3-2 Manchester derby win a fortnight ago. He impressed Mourinho once more in Wednesday's 2-0 victory at ...
Table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) will both be high on confidence after registering morale-boosting victories in their respective previous games, when they clash in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Eden Gardens here on Saturday.
World number one Rafael Nadal will aim to cement his spot in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters when he squares off with Austria's Dominic Thiem in the last-eight clash here on Friday. The Spanish tennis maestro had earlier stormed into the quarter-finals of the tournament following a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win over Karen Khachanov of Russia in a one-sided last-16 clash of the men's singles event that lasted one hour and 18 minutes. It should be noted that 16-time Grand Slam champion Nadal is bidding for an 11th Monte Carlo title and a record 31st Masters title.Thiem, on the other hand, bounced back from a set down to register a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 win over Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic and book his place in the last-eight of the tournament. While Nadal has reached the quarterfinals or better in Monte Carlo for 14 years in a row, Thiem is through to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the first time in his career.Heading to the semi-final clash, Nadal leads Thiem in their ...
Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri warned his side are heading to Turin on Sunday determined to end Juventus' long reign as the kings of Italian football. Juventus could have sealed a seventh consecutive title at home this weekend but for a 1-1 draw at lowly Crotone and Napoli's 4-2 fightback against Udinese midweek which reignited the Scudetto title race. "You are stronger but we will come to Turin to play the game," Sarri warned Juventus as his side look to add to their titles in 1987 and 1990. "I saw the team playing with great sharpness again. We are mathematically second, the goal is reached, now we can have fun." Napoli have reduced the deficit to four points on Juventus with five games to play. But history does not favour Sarri's side who have always lost in the Allianz Stadium. Despite attempts to minimise the scope of Sunday's direct clash, the game should decide the championship with a seven-point advantage probably meaning a seventh consecutive Scudetto for Juventus. A Napoli win
Chelsea kept their outside chances of chasing down Tottenham Hotspur for a place in next season's Champions League alive as a much-changed side secured a 2-1 win at Burnley. At the other end of the table, Southampton crept closer to relegation as a 0-0 draw at Leicester leaves the Saints still four points off safety with just four games remaining to save themselves. Chelsea closed to within five points of fourth-placed Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino's men also have a kinder run in than their London rivals. Southampton and Chelsea meet for the second time in eight days in a FA Cup semi-final on Sunday after Antonio Conte's side came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at St. Mary's on Saturday. And with the Cup representing Chelsea's last chance at silverware this season, Conte left Eden Hazard and Willian on the bench as Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata started together up front for the first time. Burnley's opening day 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge was an early indicator as to how the season would
A brace from late substitute Juanmi sealed a precious 3-0 win for Real Sociedad to virtually end Atletico Madrid's fading hopes of challenging for the Spanish league title. With a 12-point deficit to Barcelona, Atletico were already facing an uphill task to overhaul the runaway La Liga leaders. Now with only five games remaining, Diego Simeone's men would be forgiven for focusing their remaining efforts on making sure they finish second ahead of Real Madrid -- now just three points adrift -- and their bid to win the Europa League. Atletico face Arsenal in the semi-finals of Europe's second tier competition next week. Simeone warned on Tuesday his side would have to start improving if they were to stop star striker Antoine Griezmann from being lured to a rival club. Barcelona and England's Premier League are, according to reports, his favoured destinations. And after this performance, the Argentine should have even more reason for concern. "Today, we played poorly in the first half ..
Kings XI Punjab speedster Andrew Tye heaped praise on his side's explosive opener Chris Gayle, saying the West Indian played to perfection during his unbeaten knock of 104 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL match here. Gayle's 63-ball unbeaten innings, which included 11 sixes, helped KXIP post a total of 193/3. In reply, the Sunrisers fell short by 15 runs. "Gayle played to perfection. He made sure that he stayed there till the end. You don't often see (spinner Rashid) Khan get hit for more than 25 in one over. To make Rashid concede that many runs (55 in four overs) was awesome," Tye said at the post-match news conference last night. Tye said Gayle's shot selection and execution was spot-on. "I think he went about it very well. He knew that once he got through the powerplay, the spin would come on and then he got into the rhythm against the spin. I think he was very smart about it not to take too many risks against the pacers (early on)," he said. Asked what would have been his

Chris Gayle gave a fitting answer to the sceptics with a blistering hundred as Kings XI Punjab overpowered Sunrisers Hyderabad by 15 runs in an IPL encounter, here tonight. Gayle's unbeaten 63-ball-104, his 21st hundred in shortest format propelled KXIP to 193 for 3 in 20 overs and they then restricted Sunrisers to 178 for 4, recording their third win in the tournament. For Sunrisers, it was their first defeat after three successive wins. A cornered tiger can be dangerous and Gayle showed why he has taken the initial lack of interest of franchises to his heart. "A lot of people thought I'm too old. After this innings, I have nothing to prove," Gayle said immediately after his knock. While chasing, Sunrisers' were dealt with a blow at the onset when Shikhar Dhawan was hit on the elbow off the very first delivery that he faced from Barinder Sran.
