Stokes expected to be fit to bowl in Auckland Test

England all-rounder Ben Stokes will be fit to bowl in this week's opening Test against New Zealand if he successfully manages to come through training.Earlier, Stokes' hopes of making a Test return suffered a major blow after he was ruled out of his side's two-day warm-up match against New Zealand XI due to a back injury. The opening warm-up match would have been Stokes' first match since his last Test appearance against West Indies in September 2017, after which he was ruled out the Ashes series in the wake of his alleged involvement in a scuffle outside a City nightclub on September 25.However, Stokes seems to have recovered from that injury and is all set to train ahead of the opening Test, which is slated to be held on Thursday at the Eden Park in Auckland, ESPNcricinfo reported.Commenting on Stokes' chances to play in the opening Test, an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) spokesperson said, "His plan is to bowl tomorrow and on Wednesday outdoors. If he comes through, which he ..

McIlroy ends win-less streak with title win; Lahiri finishes 75th

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri ended a disappointing week with a horrendous card of six-over 78 to finish T-75 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational here. Lahiri dropped six bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies in his final round to total nine-over 297. Four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, made a back-nine charge like never before with five birdies in six closing holes to end a nearly 18-month winless period dating back to the day Arnold Palmer passed away on September 25, 2016. Ironically, McIlroy's first win since came at the Arnold Palmer Invitational where he carded a final day 8-under 64 and won by three shots. I wish I walked up that hill and got a handshake from him. But I'm so happy to put my name on that trophy," he said. Much before McIllroy produced his fireworks, Tiger Woods was the man in focus, as he has been since his return at the Hero World Challenge in December 2017. There was a stage when Woods, clad in trademark Sunday red-shirt, made three birdies in a ...

Guptill called in Kiwis squad as cover for injured Taylor

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has been called in the 13-man squad for the opening day-night Test against England, beginning at the Eden Park in Auckland. The 31-year-old, who smashed a crucial 73-run knock for New Zealand XI against England XI in a practice match in Hamilton on Friday, has been added to the squad as a batting cover for injured Ross Taylor. However, it should be noted that Taylor has been progressing pretty well after aggravating the thigh injury he suffered during his game-changing 181 not out in the fourth ODI against England.Reflecting on Guptill's inclusion, national selector Gavin Larsen said that the former will give the squad more depth, while he also provided an update on Taylor."We opted for extra batting cover for that final spot and with Martin having been playing in the middle-order recently, he can cover a number of positions for us," Larsen said."Ross is progressing nicely and is expected to take a full part in training tomorrow. The team are looking ...

India at CWG: Nervous energy helps, feels boxing coach Nieva

Confidence becomes the buzzword before any major sporting event but Indian boxing's High-Performance Manager Santiago Nieva prefers a bit of nervous energy heading into next month's Commonwealth Games because "that's what gets the best out of everyone". The 43-year-old Argentine-born Swede would be exactly one year into his job when the Games get underway in Gold Coast from April 4. Indian boxers had claimed four silver and a bronze at the last edition in 2014 and the country stands 12th in the all-time list with five gold, nine silver and 14 bronze medals in all. In an interview to PTI before the team of eight men and four women boxers left for a pre-CWG training trip to Canberra, Nieva dwelled on India's medal chances and the discontent triggered by a brand new selection policy. "Yeah, it's going to be my CWG debut. I have been at the Pan-American Games (while competing and later managing Argentina), the Olympics and now the Commonwealth Games which will be followed by the Asian ...

12 years later, Sharath Kamal seeks another double gold in Australia

Two of A Sharath Kamal's three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games were won in Australia and it is this little statistic which is driving India's finest table tennis player to go for another double in the Gold Coast edition next month. In all probability, the upcoming mega-event from April 4 to 15 will be the last CWG appearance for the 35-year-old, who has been leading India's mantle in the racket sport since 2006 Melbourne Games when he exceeded expectations by winning the team as well as the singles gold. Sharath has his name on all the three gold medals India has won at the quadrennial competition and factoring in his recent form, he thinks he can add at least another two yellow metal to his overall kitty. The Indian stunned world number 7 Koki Niwa at the Qatar Open earlier this month for "the biggest win of his career". "I feel we have a good chance in all four categories (singles, team, doubles and mixed doubles). It is easily the strongest men's squad we have fielded at the .

Indian golfer Aditi Ashok seemed to have regained her form on the final day as she carded six birdies enroute to a week's best card of four-under 68 to finish T-26 at the Bank of Hope Founders Cup on the LPGA here. The 19-year-old Indian, playing her second season on the LPGA, was making her first start since missing one in Australia at the beginning of the year. She had three birdies against one bogey on either side of the turn and took her total from four-under 212 and Tied-50th place to eight-under 280 and Tied-26th place, which gave her a decent start and a cheque of USD 12,697. After this week she plans to play as much as possible for next few months. Meanwhile, 29-year-old Inbee Park built on her solid 54-hole position to complete her 19th LPGA win.
