Kallon's strike takes NEROCA to the top

NEROCA FC defeated Gokulam Kerala FC by a solitary goal to jump to the top of the 2017-18 Hero I- League, here today. Liberian defender Varney Kallon Kiatamba scored two minutes before half-time which was enough for the newly- promoted side to register all three points at their home ground and unsettle Minerva Punjab FC at the top. Gift Raikhan decided not to disturb NEROCA's winning combination which defeated Churchill Brothers in their away game earlier this week. Bino George, on the other hand, made three changes in the starting eleven which defeated Shillong Lajong in the previous game. Kivi Zhimoni, Santu Singh and Daniel Addo made way for Arjun Jayaraj, Henry Kisekka and Balwinder Singh. The visitors received an early blow when Laldampuia had to leave the field with an injury in the ninth minute of the game. George introduced Kivi Zhimoni in place of the injured winger. NEROCA opened the goal mouth on multiple occasions within the first 25 minutes of the match. ...

Presence of Ashwin, Vijay boosts TN's prospects in Vijay

The presence of ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Test opener Murali Vijay gives Tamil Nadu an advantage in the Vijay Hazare Trophy Group 'C', when the matches begin at various venues here tomorrow. The host gets its campaign underway with a match against Gujarat and will expect to come up trumps in the tournament. Ashwin, who has been out of the India ODI side since last year's ICC Champions Trophy, will aim to be among the wickets and impress the selectors again. The lanky off-spinner, who was recently snapped up by Kings XI Punjab in the IPL auctions, did well in the first two Tests of the series against South Africa before missing the third. His experience could be vital for Tamil Nadu's bowling unit in what are likely to be high-scoring conditions. Vijay, on the other hand, who hasn't featured in the limited-overs format for a while now, will look to use the tournament to run into form ahead of this year's IPL. He has been picked up by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) .

IOC chief 'disappointed' over lifting of Russian doping bans

A decision by sport's top court to lift life bans for doping of 28 Russian athletes was "extremely disappointing and surprising", IOC chief Thomas Bach said today. He said that the ruling came as a complete surprise to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). "We would never have expected this," Bach told a press conference in Pyeongchang just five days ahead of the opening of the Winter Olympic Games. The IOC's disciplinary commission banned 43 Russian athletes for life and disqualified all Russians from competing at the Pyeongchang Games over a state-sponsored doping conspiracy. It later ruled that 169 athletes who had proved they were clean would be allowed to compete. The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday upheld the appeals of the 28 Russians against the Olympic life bans, ruling there was "insufficient" evidence that the athletes had benefited from the doping system at the 2014 Winter Games, hosted by Russia. Bach said that Olympic officials had asked CAS
