FC Goa players yet to arrive, match against ATK to be delayed

A Navy fighter jet crash at the Dabolim airport today forced an unprecedented one-hour delay in the Indian Super League football clash between ATK and FC Goa here today. The home match of ATK was scheduled at 8pm but due to the unavoidable circumstances the kick off is delayed by a "minimum one hour". "The match between ATK and FC Goa will be delayed for a minimum of one hour," Football Sports Development Limited, the competition organisers, said in a release. An MiG-29 K fighter jet of the Navy overshot the runway and caught fire forcing the runway to be closed for operations for a brief period. It was another blow for the Gaurs' arrival plan. They were to depart Goa yesterday but a technical snag in their aircraft had forced them to stay put there and take today's flight for Kolkata. Their flight was to depart from Dabolim at 10am today. As per their new plan, the Goans are slated to land around 8pm here and that means they will have to directly head towards the match

More open-minded in my preparation than last time: Vijay

Flexibility is the key while preparing for a difficult assignment and that's precisely the reason why senior opener Murali Vijay has done his homework with an "open mind" compared to his previous tours of South Africa. "I am preparing myself to be a little more open-minded than I was last time. You cannot have a set pattern you cannot go into a Test thinking that you are going to leave so many balls. You also have to be in a frame of mind to score runs," Vijay said during a media interaction after training session. "If they bowl in good areas, then you have to try and counter that and come out stronger as well. These are the things I think which will be critical for us to move forward. I just want to go out there and whatever is thrown at me, I just want to play my 'A' game and do well for my country," Vijay added. The bouncy tracks of South Africa has been the talking point of India's upcoming Test series but Vijay reckons that managing the bounce is easier for an ...

No threat to India's No.1 status even if SAfrica sweep Tests

India's status as the No.1 Test side in ICC rankings will remain intact irrespective of how the series against South Africa pans out, but the Proteas will join the visitors at the top if they win all the three matches. Faf du Plessis's side is presently 13 points behind Virat Kohli's team, which is sitting on top of the table on 124 points. However, both the sides will finish on 118 points if the South Africa side makes a clean sweep of the series which starts in Cape Town on January 5, the International Cricket Council said in a statement. Even in that scenario, India will be ranked above South Africa when the points are calculated beyond the decimal point. In such a situation, India will be on 118.47 points, while South Africa will be on 117.53. On the other side of the coin, if India win all the three Tests of the series, then they will move to 128 points while South Africa will slip to 107 points. Yuki squanders chances galore in defeat against Herbert

Yuki Bhambri pressed the self-destruct button by squandering six break chances in the deciding set and crashed out of the Tata Open Maharashtra following a three-set defeat against eighth seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert here today. Bhambri's first serve let him down today as he bowed out with a 6-4 3-6 4-6 defeat against the Frenchman, ranked 81, in the second round of the hard court ATP 250 event. Bhambri, ranked 118, needed to play percentage tennis against a rival like Herbert but he struggled. His second serve hardly had any sting, making it easier for Herbert to attack. Herbert, to his credit, got better and better after a shaky start. He soaked in the pressure and came out strong. His body language remained strong while Bhambri could not assert himself despite being in advantageous position in the third set. In the second game of the decider, Herbert was down 0-40 but the Indian youngster, who has won 11 matches in a row on these courts, could not take advantage of ...
