Rashid, Nabi have now understood why we sacked Asghar ahead of WC: Afghan chief selector

Afghanistan chief selector Dawlat Khan Ahmadzai Tuesday justified the unexpected sacking of ODI skipper Asghar Afghan ahead of the World Cup, saying the decision was taken looking at the long-term future of the team. The three-member selection panel led by Ahmadzai announced three captains for three formats last month, in a move that led to unrest in the team with star players Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi openly voicing their concerns over the timing of the decision. "We realised that we can't win the World Cup at this moment under Asghar's captaincy or anyone else who would have been in charge. We made the decision not just thinking about this World Cup, we are thinking about the 2023 edition. "We will be getting 10 matches with full members and we feel it will provide perfect training for the new captain (Gulbadin Naib)," said Ahmadzai, who is a former Afghanistan fast bowler, in response to a PTI query. Asked about the need for announcing split captaincy less than two months from .

Will use Ashwin's tips in the World Cup: Mujeeb

Injury and poor form made it a forgettable IPL for Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman but the time away from the field was well spent as he picked on Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin's brains ahead of the World Cup in England. A shoulder injury meant that the 18-year-old wasn't at his best during the cash-rich league, getting only three wickets in five games with an expensive economy rate of 10.05 runs per over. "I have learnt a lot having spend quality time with Ravichandran Ashwin in the KXIP set-up. He has given me a lot of useful tips and I am sure that I will execute those plans in the World Cup. During this edition of IPL, my shoulder injury was an issue. But now I am fully fit for the World Cup," Mujeeb told reporters at a promotional event to announce Amul's association with Afghanistan national team. While he hasn't played many matches this year, the best part about IPL according to Mujeeb is the opportunity to bowl at some of the prospective World Cup ...

Andy Murray given Queen's wildcard

Andy Murray has been given a wildcard to play at London's Queen's Club next month even though he has yet to set a date for a potential return to the court after hip surgery. The tournament in London, from June 17 to 23, could offer the five-time former winner a chance of some grass-court action ahead of Wimbledon, should he feel fit enough. The British former world number one, currently ranked 217 in the world, had the hip resurfacing operation in London in January and says he is now pain-free, although he has only been hitting balls from a stationary position so far. The Scot has an official deadline of June 18 to apply for a wildcard for this year's Wimbledon, though tournament chiefs last week suggested there might be some wiggle room for the three-time Grand Slam champion. The 31-year-old could also use his protected ranking to enter Wimbledon "A wildcard is being held in reserve for Murray, who will let tournament director Stephen Farrow know nearer the time of the event if he ..

New Delhi [India], May 7 (ANI): With just ten months to go for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, former India all-rounders Shantha Rangaswamy and Shubhangi Kulkarni have vouched for Mithali Raj, saying that she can fit into any format. The cricketing legends have also suggested that BCCI make Jhulan Goswami part of the team ahead of the tournament in Australia.Mithali, the torch-bearer of women's cricket in India for more than a decade, was left out of the ICC Women's World T20 2018 semi-final against England in the Caribbean, which began the war of words between the 36-year-old and former coach Ramesh Powar. In an exclusive interaction with ANI, Rangaswamy, who was a member of the panel that picked the new coach WV Raman, said, "If she is fit, yes. If I've had any say, I'll definitely include Mithali sheerly for her batting. Whenever she got a chance in the West Indies (during ICC Women's World T20 2018), she got a couple of half-centuries (against Pakistan and Ireland) which others couldn't

Favourite Son: Spurs star's brother details tough path to the top

The South Korean star leading Tottenham Hotspur's charge for a place in the Champions League final had a unique football upbringing. But that was only one component of his success, his brother told AFP. Striker Son Heung-min, 26, has been instrumental in Spurs' run to the semi-finals of Europe's top club competition, scoring three times over two legs against Manchester City to reach the last four. But he was suspended for the first leg of the semi, a 1-0 home defeat to Ajax, and will be crucial to their efforts in the Netherlands on Wednesday, despite picking up a petulant Premier League red card at the weekend. Around 8,500 kilometres (5,300 miles) away, his elder brother and fellow striker Son Heung-yun -- three years his senior -- will be watching closely. For years, the two boys were trained by their father, Son Woong-jung, a former professional footballer who aimed to take his sons to the top with a strict and disciplined regimen. "Everything we did revolved around football," ...

Boxing chiefs hit out at IOC over Tokyo threat

Amateur boxing's crisis-hit governing body Tuesday said it had done everything asked to clean up its act and warned of legal action if stripped of the right to organise the event at the Tokyo Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has frozen the sport's preparations for next year's showpiece competition as it seeks proof that the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) has done enough to address allegations of bout-fixing at the Rio Olympics in 2016. A decision on whether it will run the boxing programme in Tokyo is set to be made on May 22. If barred, the IOC has said it will step in to ensure the sport still appears in the Japanese capital. AIBA said in a statement to AFP that it will "defend its legitimate right" to organise boxing in Tokyo and "will review all of its options, including legal, given that the IOC has breached the Olympic Charter". The AIBA executive committee will meet on May 18 in Lausanne to fine tune its position. The governing body's chief executive Tom

Liverpool seek new 'heroes' with Salah absent against Barcelona

Liverpool must turn to unlikely heroes to overturn a 3-0 Champions League semi-final, first leg deficit against Barcelona on Tuesday, according to defender Trent Alexander-Arnold after Mohamed Salah was ruled out with concussion. Roberto Firmino will also be absent against the Spanish champions at Anfield, leaving Jurgen Klopp without two of his most potent attacking weapons for what is already a massive challenge. "Obviously we've got two of our main goalscorers out, but it also presents an opportunity for some of the other lads to come in, make a name for themselves and make themselves heroes," said Alexander-Arnold. "If we do overturn the deficit tomorrow then whoever scores, their name will always be remembered because I am sure it will be one of those really special nights." Salah was stretchered off during Liverpool's tense 3-2 win at Newcastle on Saturday that kept alive their chances of a first Premier League title in 29 years after colliding with Magpies' goalkeeper Martin ...

Would love to have big crowds cheering for us, says Devine

New Zealander all-rounder Sophie Devine expressed disappointment at the scarce turn out for the opening game of the Women's T20 Challenge here but was hopeful of a full house in the future. The second edition of the women's tournament kick started in stunning fashion with some fierce hitting by two teams captains Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur. In the end, Mandhana-led Trailblazers pulled-off a thrilling two-run win against Supernovas. However, like the last time, the stadium was far from full despite free entry. Nigel Llong pays for repairs after damaging glass door in Bengaluru stadium

Cricket umpire Nigel Llong has paid for the repairs after damaging the glass door in the umpire's room at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers' (RCB) final home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 4.Llong reportedly kicked the door after a controversial end to Sunrisers Hyderabad's innings. The umpire had signalled a no-ball off Umesh Yadav's bowling but the replays suggested that the delivery was legal."It was an unfortunate incident. He gave a wrong no-ball decision in the match, and Virat went and spoke to him, and Umesh also spoke to him. So he might have been upset, and frustrated. He came back and kicked the door to the umpires' room after the first innings. So there was a crack and a dent in the door. The glass didn't break, fortunately," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) secretary R Sudhakar Rao as saying on Tuesday."After the game, I found out, and I met the match referee. I spoke to him, and we had a discussion, and I ..
