Sri Lanka's tour ends in second whitewash in South Africa

A tour that started with an unexpected Test series triumph ended with a second successive limited overs series humiliation for Sri Lanka when South Africa won the third and final Twenty20 international on Sunday. South Africa made a daunting 198 for two and Sri Lanka were beaten by 45 runs according to the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method when they were bowled out for 137 as they chased a reduced target of 183 in 17 overs following a rain delay at the Wanderers Stadium. It completed a 3-0 series sweep for South Africa, who also won a one-day series 5-0. "In home conditions, South Africa are very tough," said Sri Lankan white-ball captain Lasith Malinga, who only joined the tour after Dimuth Karunaratne led the Test side to a 2-0 series win. Malinga said his side's inability to make early bowling breakthroughs, together with their own poor top-order batting, had been the main reason for their defeats. "Going forward we realise what we need to do," he said. South Africa's match-winner on ...

Rishabh Pant's utterly destructive 78 powered Delhi Capitals to a 37-run win over Mumbai Indians in the IPL here Sunday, giving further proof of why he should be on the World Cup-bound plane to England. Pant got those runs in only 27 balls and while the relentless onslaught would do his confidence a world of good, Jasprit Bumrah's shoulder injury two months before the ICC showpiece left the Indian cricket fraternity on tenterhooks. The Delhi dazzler's seven towering sixes and as many fours at a Wankhede Stadium that was made to look like a tiny ground left the Mumbai Indians bowlers, including the world's best pacer Jasprit Bumrah, traumatised and gave rechristened Delhi Capitals the fresh beginning they longed for. Sent into bat, Delhi Capitals notched up an imposing 213 for six in the stipulated 20 overs, and buried under a pile of runs, there was not much of a riposte from the hosts, who were stopped at 176 in 19.2 overs after an injured Bumrah failed to show up with the ...

Durham defend making ball-tamperer Bancroft their captain

Durham insisted shamed Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft is "the best available option" to captain the northeast English county. Bancroft was banned for nine months for ball-tampering in a Test against South Africa in Cape Town last March while Australia captain Steve Smith and deputy David Warner received year-long suspensions. Bancroft's ban ended in December. The 26-year-old, acting under what he later said was pressure from Warner, applied sandpaper to the ball and then hid the sandpaper down his trousers. Thursday's announcement that Bancroft was to succeed retired former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood as Durham captain provoked widespread surprise -- particularly as he will miss their Championship opener to attend Western Australia's end-of-season awards dinner and could later be selected for Australia's Ashes series in England. But Durham chief executive Tim Bostock insisted the club were left with few other options. "He is the best available option," Bostock told BBC .

Gayle is most mischievous in dressing room: Rahul

Kings XI Punjab opener Lokesh Rahul Sunday said his team-mate and West Indian swashbuckling batsman Chris Gayle was a mischievous player in the dressing room, besides being one of the best players in the T20 format. Rahul, who has been the opening partner of Gayle, said the West Indian's energy seems to be increasing even as he grows older. "Gayle is the best T20 batsman the game has ever had. But he is always up to a mischief and tries to pull my legs. He does not seem like a senior player in the dressing room but in fact he is the naughtiest and most mischievous player in a dressing room," Rahul said ahead of their IPL match against Rajasthan Royals. "I have played with Gayle for quite a while, we had an opportunity to bat together for a few years in RCB and he considered me as a 21 year boy. I have learnt a lot from him. I love his company," he added. The India opener said just like last year, Gayle has come with a lot of energy this time also. "Each year as he grows older, his ...

"Russell played a great knock. He took the game away from us. He played all the shots, the bowlers did not bowl bad deliveries but he just smashed them," Khan said at the post-match news conference. "It's just the start of the tournament. We did really well in our department. We just couldn't finish well in the last three overs and that happens in T20 cricket.
