Standing tall Down Under: India win their maiden Test series in Australia

Indian cricket got its new seminal moment after talismanic Virat Kohli led the country to a maiden series victory on Australian soil, ending a 71-year wait to script a golden chapter in the game's history. The fourth and final Test match at the SCG petered to a barren draw due to inclement weather but not before providing India with a 2-1 series win and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It is a rare first Down Under for India since Lala Amarnath's side visited the country back in 1947-48 months after independence to face Sir Don Bradman's 'Invincibles'. "Firstly, I want to say I've never been more proud of being part of a team, than this one right here. The culture we've built... our transition began right here, where I took over as captain, and I can't believe that after four years we've won here. Just one word to say, 'proud', to lead this team and it's an honour and privilege. The boys make the captain look good," an elated skipper Virat Kohli said after the mission was ...

West Bengal's women regained the team title after a two-year gap, beating holders Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) in the final of the 80th National Table Tennis Championship here Sunday. The credit must go to West Bengal -- who last won the title at the Manesar Nationals in 2016 and Mousumi Paul to give the kind of start to her team. But equal recognition should be given to PSPB team think-tank, including coach M. Gharib, who rested an in-form Archana Kamath and preferred Mouma Das, who had very little to show this season in national ranking events with mere 35 points from three appearances. In other words, in only one of those tournaments she had managed to reach the round of 32. But more than anything else, the two singles losses that the CWG gold medal winner Manika Batra suffered, first at the hand of Mousumi Paul, a PSPB player loaned to West Bengal, and then Krittwika Sinha Roy, summed up the mood of the team which eventually lost 1-3. Madhurika, who played the second ..

Whoever scores jubilation remains same, says modest Chhetri after going past Messi

To say Sunil Chhetri and Lionel Messi in the same breath is more than a little odd, is what the talismanic Indian striker himself felt once or twice. On Sunday, he went past the Argentine superstar in the list of goals scored by an active footballer on the international arena, leading, as he has so many times done, his country to its first win in the AFC Asian Cup since 1964. He was modesty personified after going past (in terms of goals scored at least) one of modern day's greatest footballers. "Records don't matter, it doesnt matter who scores the goals. Whoever scores the jubilation was the same. I'm glad we got all three points," Chhetri said after the sensational 4-1 result against Thailand, the team that featured three J-League players in its ranks. The 34-year-old Chhetri scored a world-class goal -- his second of the the game -- but he preferred to talk everything else but his strike, which became a talking point for Indian football fans. Aussie coach denies 'arrogance' after Asian Cup slip-up

Australia's coach denied treating Jordan with "arrogance" on Sunday after the Asian Cup champions came unstuck 1-0 in a horror start to their title defence. Graham Arnold had bullishly predicted victory for the Socceroos in their Group B opener, but he said his comments shouldn't be interpreted as lacking respect. "That's a translation difference. It's not arrogance, it's belief," he told a press conference, when the issue was raised by Jordanian media. "It's not arrogance at all. Those words are used a lot in Australia and in Australia it's not considered arrogant." Anas Bani-Yaseen's first-half header proved the difference as Australia made their worst start in four visits to the Asian Cup, which they won for the first time in 2015. It leaves Australia fighting to avoid an early exit at the Asian Cup. After their 2007 defeat in the quarter-finals -- in Arnold's first stint as coach -- the Socceroos have reached the last two finals. Jordan's coach Vital Borkelmans, whose fit and well
