Astha leads LET Q-School after Round 1 in Morocco

Astha Madan fired a flawless seven-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead on the opening day of the Ladies European Tour's Lalla Aicha Tour School finals here. The 22-year-old from Gurgaon had a clean score card featuring two birdies on the front nine and five on the back at the Amelkis Golf Club here to sit one clear of Lauren Horsford from England. Among other Indians, Vani Kapoor and amateur Diksha Dagar shot 2-under 70 each at Amelkis to lie T-13th, while Ridhima Dilawari with an even par 72 was T-35th. Saaniya Sharma and Sharmila Nicollet had an off day shooting 75 each to be T-68th. Madan didn't even know that she was bogey-free until after the round and thought that her score would have been "around five-under." It happened to be the best ever 18-hole score for the Sacramento State University graduate, who turned professional in July. "I'm really thrilled with my round," she said. "I started on the first hole and hit it pretty close and made birdie there. I made a really long one ..

India make poor start in stiff chase of 287

India suffered a poor start in their chase of 287 after pacer Mohammad Shami brought back the visitors back in the second Test with a six-wicket haul on day four here on Monday. Shami took career-best figures of 6-56 as Australia were bowled out for 243 runs in their second innings. India were then reduced to 15-2 at tea with Murali Vijay (6 not out) and Virat Kohli (0 not out) at the crease. KL Rahul (0) played another indecisive stroke and was bowled off Mitchell Starc (1-6) on the fourth ball of the second innings. The bigger moment came when Josh Hazlewood (1-5) had Cheteshwar Pujara (4) caught behind off a faint edge in the fourth over to leave India leaning on Kohli once again. Post a wicket-less morning session, Australia collapsed in a heap as they lost five wickets for 15 runs in the space of eight overs. Shami was the wrecker-in-chief, taking 4-26 in seven overs after lunch, as his express pace combined with short stuff bamboozled the Australian lower order. Skipper Tim ...

Imperious Latham strokes epic 264 as stuttering Sri Lanka face defeat

New Zealand opener Tom Latham flayed Sri Lanka's bowlers with an unbeaten 264 Monday before the tourists' top order failed again, leaving them on the verge of a heavy first Test defeat in Wellington. Latham walked off to a standing ovation at the Basin Reserve after carrying his bat and helping New Zealand to 578, a commanding first-innings lead of 296. Seamers Tim Southee and Trent Boult then combined to remove Sri Lanka's top order, reducing them to 20 for three at stumps on day three. Boult dismissed Danushka Gunathilaka on three, while Southee snared Dimuth Karunaratne for 10 and Dhananjaya de Silva for a duck, taking his tally for the match to eight. The pair, along with short-ball specialist Neil Wagner, will be relishing the prospect of having two full days to attack Sri Lanka's misfiring batting line-up. But the day belonged to Latham, who added steadily to his overnight total of 121, offering no chances to the frustrated Sri Lankans. It was the sixth best Test score by a New .

Teen Spirit: Young guns call shots in Indian shooting

As the year grew old, the ages of India's shooting champions got younger and if the medals won and world records owned by the incredibly talented teenagers are anything to go by, better days await the sport. While the podiums and records are a fair reflection of shooting's unprecedented upswing over the last 12 months, the soaring expectations from its young guns speak volumes about the talent at its disposal. Manu Bhaker won almost everywhere, the rare blip being her inexplicable meltdown at the Asian Games finals. The 16-year-old girl was favoured to beat women double her age and experience in the showpiece and when the script did not unfold on expected lines, she exited the 25m range teary-eyed. Heightened expectations from a teenager competing in a top-flight senior event is rare, but the breed that Bhaker belongs to is also rare. Teen pistol sensation Saurabh Chaudhary, who can now do without an introduction, is a shooter of Bhaker's ilk. Out of nowhere, Esha Singh, 13, announced

Paine, Khawaja extend Australia's lead to 233

Captain Tim Paine and Usman Khawaja frustrated India with an unbeaten 70-run stand, helping Australia extend their lead to 233 after a wicket-less morning session on day four of the second Test here on Monday. Australia reached 190-4 in their second innings at lunch on day four. At the break, Paine was batting on 37 not out while Khawaja was unbeaten on 67 runs after a session in which Australia scored 58 runs in 30 overs. Starting from overnight 132-4, the two batsmen negotiated the first hour in a sedate manner. They didn't look in any rush as only 19 runs came forth. India started with their strike bowlers Jasprit Bumrah (1-36) and Mohammed Shami (2-30), but barring a close call for run-out if it had been a direct hit, the visitors never came close to taking a wicket. Bumrah was pick of the bowlers once again, getting the ball to rear up from length and beating the batsmen on many occasions, in particular Khawaja. But the outside edge continued to elude him. The duo stepped up on ..

Messi hat-trick restores Barcelona's La Liga lead

Lionel Messi continued his sublime form by netting his 31st La Liga hat-trick as Barcelona thrashed Levante 5-0 to regain their three-point lead at the top of the table. The 31-year-old Argentinian arrived in Valencia having scored two free-kicks in last weekend's derby thumping of Espanyol. He took his goals tally for the season to 20 after a virtuoso display, while also teeing up Luis Suarez's 35th-minute opener and Gerard Pique's late fifth. Barca were under pressure after Atletico Madrid and second-placed Sevilla had both moved level on points with the Catalan giants. But after resting his key stars for their final Champions League group-stage match against Tottenham in midweek, coach Ernesto Valverde saw his refreshed side cruise to a third straight league win without conceding a goal. "At the beginning it was difficult, they squeezed us and had a chance that hit the woodwork," said Valverde Sunday. Levante started the game brightly and visiting goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen ..
