Kohli master-class keeps India alive, 252-7 at lunch

Captain Virat Kohli scored a masterful 25th hundred and helped India to 252 for seven at lunch on day three of the third Test against Australia here Sunday. The Indian skipper scored 123 runs, facing 257 balls, inclusive of 13 fours and a six, the first hundred in Perth since Sachin Tendulkar's effort back in 1992 (114 at WACA Ground). Thanks to his efforts, India now only trail by 74 runs. At lunch, Rishabh Pant was batting on 14 not out with Ishant Sharma yet to face a ball as India lost three wickets for 29 runs in the second hour of play this morning. From overnight 172 for three, India made a torrid start to the day as Ajinkya Rahane (51) was caught behind off Nathan Lyon (2-50) on the fourth ball of the first over. The ball didn't turn as much as he anticipated and only managed to edge it behind. India had added only one run at that moment, which put an end to the 91-run partnership between Kohli and Rahane for the fourth wicket. Hanuma Vihari (20) though was up to the task of ..

Qatar unveils 2022 World Cup final stadium design

Qatar revealed the design for the stadium that will in four years' time host the first ever World Cup finals game to be played in the Middle East. The 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium -- also the venue for the 2022 World Cup final -- was revealed in an elaborate ceremony attended by the country's ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and other dignitaries, including the United Nations' secretary-general, Antonio Guterres. Hassan al-Thawadi, the head of the country's World Cup organising body, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, called the unveiling a "significant milestone". "Every milestone for us is always important," he said. "The announcement of the design of the stadium is very, very important... it's the last stadium as well." The Lusail Stadium is the eighth and final venue to be revealed for the Qatar World Cup. Designed by British architects Foster and Partners, the stadium is said to take its inspiration from Arab craftmanship, said the committee. It also stands close

Ronaldo penalty sees off Torino

Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the spot as Juventus saw off city rivals Torino 1-0 to hammer home their domination in Serie A. Juventus travelled to the Stadio Olimpico after their year-long unbeaten record away from home ended with a shock 2-1 Champions League defeat by Young Boys in Bern. But Ronaldo slotted in his 11th league goal this season, and 5,000th for Juventus in Serie A, after 70 minutes after Torino goalkeeper Salvador Ichazo fouled Mario Mandzukic. Juvenuts are now 11 points ahead of second-placed Napoli, who travel to Cagliari on Sunday. Inter Milan are third, 14 points behind the leaders, after Mauro Icardi's 76th-minute penalty sealed a 1-0 win over Udinese on Saturday. Torino's hopes of a rare 'Derby della Mole' victory took a knock when goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu hobbled off injured after 20 minutes, to be replaced by Ichazo. Sirigu had hurt his hip and aggravated it further by pulling off a save of a Ronaldo volley. The 31-year-old tried to continue before being ...

Real Madrid, Atletico close in on Barcelona

Karim Benzema shot Real Madrid to within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona with the winner in a scrappy 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, while countryman Antoine Griezmann fired a brace in a 3-2 win over Real Valladolid to take Atletico Madrid level with Barca. Benzema's 13th-minute strike was enough for Real to move up to third on 29 points, two behind Barca, who travel to Levante on Sunday evening, and second-placed Atleti. Sevilla have the chance to move back above Real and level with the leading pair when they host mid-table Girona early on Sunday. However they were made to sweat for the victory points by plucky Rayo, who are second-from-bottom but would have snatched a point in stoppage time had Sergio Ramos not cleared the second of Thibaut Courtois' double saves, from Alex Alegria and Emiliano Velazquez, off the line. "That's football," said relieved Madrid coach Santiago Solari. "That's why it's such a beautiful game. When you're not playing great, when nothing's going ...

Liverpool are the 'lucky ones', moans Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has claimed Liverpool are "the lucky ones" as they bid to end a wait of nearly three decades to win the English league title. Mourinho and his Manchester United side visit Anfield on Sunday with Liverpool 16 points ahead of their bitter rivals. But Mourinho points to perceived good fortune enjoyed by Liverpool in recent victories over Everton, Bournemouth and Napoli as evidence they have lady luck on their side as they challenge for their first championship since 1990. "Of course, they are very confident about themselves," Mourinho told reporters. "They are top of the league, they have this feeling of - I know that feeling well - the feeling of the lucky ones where everything goes in your direction. "They know how they beat Everton, they know that the last match, the opening goal was offside, and they know that against Napoli in the last seconds they could be out. "They have this feeling that I also had when my teams were top of the league and it looks like everything ...

Williamson, Latham lead New Zealand charge

Skipper Kane Williamson and opener Tom Latham both scored half centuries as New Zealand closed in on Sri Lanka's modest first-innings total of 282 at tea on day two of the first Test in Wellington on Sunday. New Zealand were 175 for one at the break, with Williamson unbeaten on 71 and Latham 57 not out. Williamson made a statement of positive intent when he smashed successive boundaries off the first three balls he faced, giving Lahiru Kumara no chance to find his range after lunch. Kumara responded with a maiden over but Williamson continued to pick off any loose deliveries as the Black Caps look for a big first-innings lead. The pitch flattened out after troubling the tourists' top-order batsmen early on the opening day and offered little encouragement to Sri Lanka's bowlers. Suranga Lakmal extracted some bounce to give Latham a few uncomfortable moments on the way to his 16th Test half century, but Sri Lanka's attack was unable to exert sustained pressure. Latham patiently grafted .

Australia cricket chief open to four-day Tests

Australia's new cricket chief says he is open to the idea of trialling four-day Test matches to boost waning popularity of the red ball game. The International Cricket Council approved the experimental concept last year in a bid to ensure the future viability of Tests in the face of an explosion in the fast-paced Twenty20 format. South Africa played Zimbabwe in the inaugural four-day Test last December in Port Elizabeth, winning inside two. A minimum 98 overs had to be bowled each day, as opposed to the regulation 90 in a five-day game. Another match is scheduled for July next year when England take on Ireland at Lords. "There's a bit to be said for it," Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts told commercial sports radio station SEN late Saturday. "It's certainly something we need to be open minded to down the track." Roberts assumed the reins at CA in October from James Sutherland, who stood down after 17 years in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. He ...

Da Costa stars for BMW in Ad Diriyah

BMW i Andretti Motorsport's Antonio Felix da Costa won the very first race of the new season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne finished second and Jerome d'Ambrosio came in third Saturday. This marked the competitive debut of 22 new Gen2 cars here. This season, despite the cars lasting the whole length of the race, the introduction of a range of new power modes made the racing more unpredictable as all 22 drivers battled it out to the finish line against the 45-minute ( plus1 lap) race countdown. The focus was on energy management. Alongside a dramatic new look of the cars, there were wholesale changes to the components underneath the bodywork. "Formula E broke the mould by being the first to go electric so it's clear we aren't scared of trying new things," said Formula E Founder and CEO Alejandro Agag. Six fresh faces faced their first Formula E race Stoffel Vandoorne and Gary Paffett for HWA Racelab, Max Gunther ..

Jesus fires as Man City snatch top spot from Liverpool

Pep Guardiola welcomed Gabriel Jesus's return to form as the Brazilian struck twice in a 3-1 win over Everton as Manchester City leapfrogged Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League. Jesus hadn't scored a Premier League goal for four months before opening the scoring midway through the first-half and bulleted home a header to double City's lead early in the second-half. Dominic Calvert-Lewin briefly gave Everton hope, but Raheem Sterling came off the bench to make the game safe with his first touch and move City two points ahead of Liverpool, who host Manchester United on Sunday. "Strikers need to score goals," said Guardiola of Jesus's man-of-the-match performance. "The difference today was that he scored as he was in better positions." Guardiola could even afford the luxury of leaving Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero on the bench on their return from injury as the Catalan coach again shuffled his pack for the busy festive period.
