The 29-year Harmanpreet reached the three-figure mark in 49 balls, punishing the Nerw Zealand bowlers with eight sixes and seven fours. The skipper led by example after India were struggling at 40 for three. Opting to bat after the coin landed in her favour at the Providence Stadium, Harmanpreet was required to walk into the middle early, at the fall of debutant Dayalan Hemalatha's wicket in only the sixth over. Jemimah Rodrigues too struck a brisk 59 off 45 balls with the help of seven boundaries. In the process, Rodrigues, just 18, became the youngest player to score a fifty in Word T20 tournament. Katerina Siniakova, the world number 31, will then face 63rd-ranked Alison Riske in Saturday's second rubber. Kalu ruled out for six weeks

Prolific ATK forward Kalu Uche was Friday ruled out for at least six weeks with a grade three qaudricep tear, leaving a "big hole" in the squad, coach Steve Coppell said. The coach said the Nigerian forward has gone back to Barcelona to receive medical treatment and the ATK think tank has sought for a replacement. Kalu is unlikely to be available for six matches. "He had an extensive tear in his quadriceps muscles. It is grade three which is quite bad. We expect Kalu to be fit around Christmas so we are really looking for a player to fill in for what could be five games after this game," Coppell said on the eve of their match against FC Pune City. "We got league approval only last night so we could not get anyone in for this match. He obviously leaves a big hole in our squad. We have requested the ISL whether we can replace him in the short time. "They have said yes we can but that creates problems in itself because trying to find someone for a short period of time is very difficult. .

Only winning title will silence critics says Klopp

Jurgen Klopp admits he is frustrated that the high expectations surrounding Liverpool's Premier League title bid have overshadowed their strong start to the season. Klopp's third-placed side have won eight of their 11 matches in an unbeaten opening to the league campaign. But despite their position among the leading title contenders, Liverpool have endured criticism of late after some erratic displays both domestically and in the Champions League. A midweek loss at Red Star Belgrade was especially underwhelming, but Reds boss Klopp believes the doubters are wrong to question his team. Aware that champions Manchester City and in-form Chelsea -- both also unbeaten in the league -- have garnered more praise than Liverpool, Klopp launched a passionate defence of his side on Friday, claiming only winning the title for the first time since 1990 will be enough to silence the critics. "The season so far-wise, points-wise in the Premier League, has been really successful," Klopp told ...
