Marcus Stoinis smacked a quick-fire unbeaten half-century and claimed three wickets as Australia began their T20 World Cup campaign with a comprehensive 39-run victory against Oman at the Kensington Oval on Thursday. Stoinis helped Australia recover from a top-order slide with a brutal unbeaten 67-run knock off 36 balls to help them post 164/5 in the company of David Warner (56). He then produced figures of 3-0-19-3 as the 2021 champions grabbed two points. Oman tried to take the fight to the opposition but their lack of experience showed as they could manage only 125/9 in 20 overs. Oman were pegged back when Nathan Ellis (2/28) and Mitchell Starc (2/20) struck once each inside the first three overs. Starc produced a vicious inswinger on the third ball of Oman's innings which hit Pratik Athavale (0) on the pads, but Australia were forced to take a DRS review after their appeal was declined on the field. Oman then reviewed unsuccessfully when Ellis pinned Kashyap Prajapati (7) in f
Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis on Thursday said low scores and slow pitches seem to be "the theme" of the ongoing T20 World Cup but he is hopeful that wickets will improve as the tournament progresses. Australia defeated Oman in their tournament-opener here by 39 runs after posting a relatively high score, by tournament standards so far, of 164/5 with Stoinis smacking a 36-ball 67 and grabbing three wickets to be the player of the match. Speaking to the media in the post-game press conference, Stoinis was asked if the low scores in the tournament, a far cry from the regular 200-plus totals that fans witnessed during last month's IPL, have shocked him. "Yeah, it wasn't a shock I think from watching the games so far, it seems like that's going to be the theme of the tournament. But it's one thing watching it from the side and then another thing to adapt yourself while you're out there. "So, it was fine. It just took some getting used to, I guess," he said. To the world, it might be perceived as extreme arrogance but when Riyan Parag looks into your eyes and tells you that "I am going to play for India no matter what", it is extreme self belief in one's own skill-set and abilities. "At some point, you'll have to take me, right? So that is my belief, I'm going to play for India. I don't really care when," Parag would sound bullish yet confident during his exclusive interaction with PTI on Wednesday. No youngster has polarised opinions in a short span of time as the 22-year-old from Assam, who enjoyed a breakout IPL season with 573 runs at a strike-rate close to 150, coming in at No.4 for the Rajasthan Royals. In five previous years of IPL, Riyan, a 2018 U-19 World Cup winner didn't even enjoy a 200-run season and a vicious social media was more than unkind to a youngster who was making a transition from boyhood to manhood. "When I was not scoring runs I said this in an (earlier) interview as well that I am going to play for India," Pa

A four-wicket burst by pacer Dilon Heyliger powered Canada to a smooth 63-run win over Nepal during the first-round warm-up matches ahead of the T20 World Cup here on Tuesday. Asked to bat first, Canada, who are set to make their debut in the marquee ICC event, made 183 for seven aided by Nicholas Kirton's 51 and Ravinderpal Singh's unbeaten 41 off 17 balls. Heyliger (4/20) then ripped through the Nepal line-up as they could only make 120 before getting bowled out with three balls to spare. After the early return of Aaron Johnson, Kirton and Navneet Dhaliwal revived their innings with a half-century stand for the second wicket. Heyliger (13) also chipped in with the bat, helping Ravinderpal to make 48 for the unbroken eighth wicket partnership. The 34-year-old later returned to rattle Nepal with the ball in a fine spell. Kushal Malla top-scored for Nepal with 37 off 30 balls as they struggled to build partnerships with seven batters posting scores in the single digits. In Trinid

The ICC has granted official List-A status to Major League Cricket matches in the US in only its second season, a move aimed at promoting the game in one of the biggest sports markets. The International Cricket Council's decision comes a week before MLC commences its second season and less than a week before the Americas host cricket's showpiece event, the T20 World Cup. The ICC's move makes MLC as the official T20 league and America's first world-class domestic tournament. "Now, every century, half-century, '?ve-for', run-out, win, loss, and championship will be documented as official career statistics in an internationally recognised format of the game," said MLC in a statement. The official status to MLC means it will provide local US players and upcoming stars of the game the opportunity for international recognition, furthering the development of domestic talent in the country. "The List-A status comes after the MLC's successful inaugural season and underscores its unwavering
The West Indies on Sunday named Obed McCoy as Jason Holder's replacement for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with the latter being ruled out due to an injury which he sustained while playing the County Championship. Without providing specific details of the injuries to Holder, the Cricket West Indies said in a release that the player will require a recovery period and the team's medical staff will provide all support "to ensure his swift and complete recovery". "Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field. We look forward to having a fully fit Jason with us again soon," lead selector and former player Desmond Haynes was quoted as saying in the CWI release. "While it is unfortunate to lose a player of Jason's caliber, we are confident in the abilities of Obed McCoy. Obed has shown remarkable skill and promise in his performances, and this opportunity will allow him to further showcase his talent on the international stage,"
