Facebook's upcoming dating service won't have ads

At the annual F8 2018 developer's conference, one of the most interesting announcements to come from Facebook was the launch of a new dating service within the social network. This announcement raised many eyebrows as online dating service comes with its own set of privacy and security concerns and people are bound to have reservations after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.Nonetheless, Facebook plans to roll out the purported service after testing it in a few months time.Given that the main Facebook is overloaded with ads based on user preference, one might expect the dating service to be the same. However, Facebook clarified that it does not plan to run ads alongside the profiles of potential matches, Recode has reported. The company has also promised that the user data it will collect to find the potential match for you will not be used to throw targeted ads on other Facebook properties such as Instagram or Messenger.

Smart microchip can power sensors for 'Internet of Things'

Scientists have developed a novel microchip that can function under dim light using a very small solar cell, an advance that could power sensors to support Internet of Things. The Internet of Things (IoT), while still in its infancy, is shaping the future of many industries and will also impact our daily lives in significant ways. One of the key challenges of moving IoT devices from concept to reality is to have long-lasting operation under tightly constrained energy sources, thus demanding extreme power efficiency. IoT devices - such as sensors - are often deployed on a massive scale and in places that are usually remote and difficult to service regularly, thus making their self-sufficiency essential. Currently, batteries in IoT devices are much larger and up to three times more expensive than the single chip they power. Their size is determined by the sensor node lifetime, which directly affects how often they need to be changed. This has an important bearing on maintenance cost and

Iran president criticizes blocking of Telegram messaging app

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is criticizing the blocking of the popular Telegram messaging app in the Islamic Republic, saying those in his administration weren't the ones who shut off access. The app, believed to be used by half of Iran's 80 million people, was crucial in fanning nationwide protests in December and January. Authorities temporarily blocked the app to calm the demonstrations, but Iran's judiciary on Monday ordered internet service providers to block access to the app. Since then, users largely haven't been able to access it. In a post on photo-sharing app Instagram, which isn't blocked in Iran, Rouhani said late Friday: "No social network or messenger were blocked 'by this government' and won't be blocked." The semi-official ISNA news agency also reported his remarks.

US military bans Huawei, ZTE phones

Personnel on US military bases can no longer buy phones and other gear manufactured by Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE, after the Pentagon said the devices pose an "unacceptable" security risk. Concerns have heightened at the Pentagon about consumer electronics being used to snoop on or track service members. "Huawei and ZTE devices may pose an unacceptable risk to (military) personnel, information and mission," Pentagon spokesman Major Dave Eastburn said today. "In light of this information, it was not prudent for the Department's exchanges to continue selling them," he added, referring to the military-run shops on US bases around the world. Eastburn said the order to pull Huawei devices was given on April 25. "Given security concerns about ZTE cell phones and related products, the (Pentagon's) exchange services also removed ZTE products from their stores," he said. Eastburn could not discuss the technical aspects of the potential threats, but The Wall Street Journal said the Pentagon .

"Our work on elections goes far beyond improving policies for advertising," Google senior vice president Kent Walker said in a blog post. "We're investing heavily in keeping our own platforms secure and working with campaigns, elections officials, journalists, and others to help ensure the security of the online platforms that they depend on. " Google promised last year to make political advertising more transparent. New policies for US election ads were a 'first step' in fulfilling that vow, according to Walker. Google said that it will require anyone seeking to buy election ads in the US to prove they are legal residents, as required by law. "That means advertisers will have to ...
