Experts in Singapore have urged India to build a strong cyber security system for its shipping sector, saying the country is investing billions of dollars in maritime infrastructure but the enforcement of anti-cyber attack rules is not as per the need of the hour. Geoff Leeming, partner at Singapore-based cyber security consultancy Pragma, said cyber attack was a mega problem for every industry but the shipping sector has just "woken up in the last couple of years". Anti-cyber attack rules and regulations enforcement in countries like India, which is developing multi-billion dollar maritime infrastructure, is lower than the need of the hour, he said. "Don't just wait for a cyber attack on your ships and maritime infrastructure, for it may be worse than the 26/11 attack in Mumbai," Leeming said, referring to the November 2008 terror attack in Mumbai and the September 2001 attack in New York. "The shipping industry has to wake up to what they can do about these threats from cyber attack

India's Aadhaar technology does not pose any privacy issue and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has funded the World Bank to take this approach to other countries as it is worth emulating, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has said. The 62-year-old multi-billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist said Nandan Nilekani, Infosys founder who is considered as the chief architect of Aadhaar, was consulting and helping the World Bank on the project. Asked if India's Aadhaar technology is worth emulating by other countries, he replied, "Yes". "The benefits of that (basic ID -- Aadhaar) are very high," he told PTI. More than a billion people in India have enrolled in Aadhaar, the world's largest biometric ID system. A newly updated version of the humble glass microscope slide can now enable scientists to see tiny objects while also measuring their temperature, a study has found. The advance, made possible by a new transparent coating, has the potential to streamline and enhance scientific research worldwide, from clandestine government biology labs to high school chemistry classes. The finding, published in the journal Nature Communications, may also have implications in other industries, such as computers and electronics, which require measurement and control of heat in highly confined spaces. "We have instruments that magnify incredibly small objects. And we have tools that measure heat, like infrared thermometers," said Ruogang Zhao, an assistant professor in the University at Buffalo in the US. "But we haven't been able to combine them in a low-cost and reliable manner. This new coating takes a big step in that direction," said Zhao. For decades, researchers have tried to combine thermal ...

Astronomers have detected helium gas in the atmosphere of a planet that orbits a star far beyond our solar system for the first time. An international team, led by Jessica Spake from the University of Exeter in the UK, discovered evidence of the inert gas on 'super-Neptune' exoplanet WASP-107b, 200 light years from Earth and in the constellation of Virgo. The breakthrough, made from observations using the Hubble Space Telescope, revealed an abundance of helium in the upper atmosphere of the exoplanet, which was only discovered in 2017, according to the study published in the journal Nature. "The helium we detected extends far out to space as a tenuous cloud surrounding the planet," said Tom Evans from the University of Exeter. "If smaller, Earth-sized planets have similar helium clouds, this new technique offers an exciting means to study their upper atmospheres in the very near future," Evans said. The strength of the helium signal detected was so large that scientists believe the ...
