Novel portable device can sniff out' trapped humans

Scientists have developed a light and portable sensor that can detect even the faintest signs of life, and could be used to rescue people trapped in rubble after an earthquake or bombing. The first step after buildings collapse due to a disaster is to rescue people who could be trapped in the rubble. However, finding entrapped humans among the ruins can be challenging. Scientists from ETH Zurich in Switzerland and University of Innsbruck in Austria developed an inexpensive, selective sensor that is light and portable enough for first responders to hold in their hands or for drones to carry on a search for survivors. In the hours following a destruction-causing event, the survival rate of people stuck in the rubble rapidly drops, so it is critical to get in there fast. Current approaches include the use of human-sniffing dogs and acoustic probes that can detect cries for help. However, these methods have drawbacks, such as the limited availability of canines and the silence of ...

Russia adds Google IPs to registry of banned sites

Russia's communications watchdog agency says it is adding some Google IP addresses to the state register of banned sites, as a dispute over a banned messaging app intensifies. Russia has ordered the popular Telegram messaging app to shut down because it won't share its encryption key with intelligence agencies. Communications watchdog Roskomnadzor then blocked 18 networks that are used by Amazon and Google and host sites it believe Telegram is using to circumvent the ban. That move blocked access to millions of sites, including many Russian businesses. Today, Roskomnadzor raised the stakes by announcing it had added an unspecified number of Google IP address used by Telegram to the register of banned sites. Google has long ignored a Roskomnadzor demand to store personal data on Russian servers.

IIITD students develop app to help resolve civic issues

Raising civic issues with government departments and getting them resolved has been perceived as a cumbersome process by the public, but the students of Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology-Delhi might have a solution to this. A group of M.Tech students of IIIT-D has developed a mobile application that would help general public to file complaints on public grievances on a simple, short and interactive interface. The app named NoWhinge avoids the confusion of how and to which department one should raise the grievance. "One can simply register one's complaint, the content of which would then be analysed by the software and forwarded to the concerned department," Aakash Deep, a member of the team said. Besides Deep, the other team members are Ishbir Walia, Karan Dabas, Manshul V Belani and Raunak Sinha. "Coming from a technical background, we thought there should be an easy-to-use app to speed up the complaint process. The app also comes with a tracking option so that one ...

Novel robot can assemble 'build-it-yourself' furniture

Scientists have developed a robot with a 3D camera and two arms equipped with grippers that can autonomously put together ready-to-assemble furniture without interruption. The robot assembled a 'build-it-yourself' chair in 8 minutes and 55 seconds. Prior to the assembly, the robot took 11 minutes and 21 seconds to independently plan the motion pathways and 3 seconds to locate the parts. "The job of assembly, which may come naturally to humans, has to be broken down into different steps, such as identifying where the different chair parts are, the force required to grip the parts, and making sure the robotic arms move without colliding into each other," said Pham Quang Cuong, assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. "Through considerable engineering effort, we developed algorithms that will enable the robot to take the necessary steps to assemble the chair on its own," said Cuong. "We are looking to integrate more artificial intelligence into this approach .

CPWD to monitor projects, works through web-based software

To bring in more transparency and expedite implementation of projects, government construction agency CPWD will monitor utilisation of funds and progress of projects on a real-time basis through a web-based system, a senior official said. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) executes around 15,000 projects and works, involving payments of Rs 15,000- 20,000 crore, every year through its 400 field offices, including those in remote and hilly areas and north-eastern parts of the country. The CPWD, which functions under the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry, has launched a web-based system, e-MB (electronic measurement book), to monitor both financial progress or utilisation of funds and the physical progress of projects, Chief Controller of Accounts at the ministry, Shyam S Dubey, said. How cancer-causing virus clings to our DNA decoded

Scientists have unveiled how a cancer-causing virus anchors itself to our DNA, paving the way for doctors to treat incurable diseases by flushing out viruses that permanently embed themselves in human cells. The researchers used a microscope built by them to unveil the structure of the tether used by a virus called Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). Until now, such tethers have largely eluded scientists because they are so diabolically small, defying even the most high-tech approaches to determining their form. "We're seeing things on the order of 8,000 times smaller than a human hair," said M Mitchell Smith, from University of Virginia (UVA) in the US, who built the microscope piece-by-piece. "The reason we can't get rid of these viruses is because we can't figure out a way to get their DNA out of the nucleus, out of the cell," said Dean H Kedes, UVA researcher. "They depend on this 'tether' to remain anchored to the DNA within our cells, and to remain attached even as ..

Millennials switching jobs fast, techies lead the way: Study

There has been an upswing in switching jobs swiftly and aggressively in last 16 years, especially by the millennial workforce in technical roles like data scientists, software engineers and product managers, according to a study. Millennials these days are more ambitious, restless and are less afraid to take chances because of so many options at hand, a study by global predictive outbound hiring solution provider Belong has revealed. "People are hopping jobs in search of larger ownership and learning opportunities. That is also a reason why the younger generation is opting to work at startups. The belief in the world of open source and internet is that learning happens while doing more things. "This is in contrast to joining a large organisation where there would be lesser ownership, and therefore, lesser learning," Belong's chief technology officer (CTO) Vinodh Kumar Ravindranath said. For this study, the team considered those born between 1977-1994 as Millennials. Of the entire data
