Two held for preparing fake ATM cards

Police arrested two people, including an engineer, on charges of preparing fake ATM cards and using them for withdrawing money from ATM kiosks. The police seized electronic devices, fake ATM cards, Rs 4 lakh in cash, gold jewels and a few computers and accessories all worth Rs 31 lakh, according to an official statement released here today. A special team was constituted on instructions from Director General of Police (DGP) S K Gautam. The sleuths attached to the special team were on routine rounds in different parts of the town and its neighbourhood to prevent the menace. A tip-off was received by the team bringing to the notice of the police that some persons have been making fake ATM cards at a computer browsing centre in the heart of the town, the statement said. Acting on the tip-off, the special team conducted raid at a computer centre and arrested two people -- Balaji and Jayachandran -- with some fake ATM cards and electronic devices. The duo used to collect data of ATM cards .

SC website down amidst fears of hacking, restored hours later

The official website of the Supreme Court, which was suspected to be hacked today, was restored late in the evening after several hours of fire-fighting by information technology experts. The website, which had turned "non-functional" from 11.35 am, became accessible only at around 7.50 pm. One of the screen shots of the top court web page circulating on some social media sites showed signs left by some Brazilian hackers who may have targeted it. An image of cannabis leaves, with a message saying "hackeado por HighTech Brazil HacTeam", could be seen. Later in the day, when attempts to reach the website at supremecourtofindia.nic.in was made, the result read: "site under maintenance". Scientists have developed hi-tech clothes using strain sensing textile fibres that can keep track of the wearer's movements. Researchers at Deakin University in Australia said the strain sensing textiles could be used to produce compression garments that monitor professional athletes during competition, or to allow patients to track and compile data while undergoing physical rehabilitation. The devices could also be applied to virtual and augmented reality technology, providing more thorough feedback and accurate movement within VR games and simulations, according to the study published in the journal Applied Materials Today. Get commitment that FB, others will not manipulate polls: par panel to IT ministry

A parliamentary panel today directed IT ministry officials to get a "written commitment" from Facebook and other social networking sites that their platforms would not be used to manipulate Indian elections, a member present at the meeting said. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT, headed by BJP MP Anurag Thakur, also told officials of the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) to furnish all written communication and queries sent to Facebook and its response, a member of the panel told PTI on condition of anonymity. "The chairman told the ministry officials to get a written commitment from Facebook and other social media platforms with an influential market share in the country that their platforms would not be used to manipulate Indian elections," he said. Airtel likely to offer free subscription of Netflix on TV app

Telecom major Bharti Airtel is in advance talks with video streaming giant Netflix to offer free access of its content to Airtel TV App users. "Netflix and Airtel are in advanced discussions for an exclusive tie-up to offer Netflix content to Airtel mobile customers. Several rounds of discussions have been completed between the two companies and the deal could be announced in the coming weeks," sources privy to the deal told PTI. Fine balance must for data availability, innovation and privacy: Prasad

The new data protection law will be finalised soon, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today, asserting that India must strike a fine balance between data availability, innovation and privacy issues.
