Tripura CM maintains his stand on Indians inventing internet

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Wednesday reiterated his statement, where he claimed that internet and satellites existed since the Mahabharata era.Speaking to ANI, the Tripura chief minister said that only the narrow-minded people will find it difficult to believe the facts stated by him."They want to belittle their own nation and think highly of other countries. Believe the truth. Do not get confused and do not confuse others," Deb said.Earlier while speaking at a Regional Workshop on Computerisation and Reforms at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala, Deb said that the internet was invented by India lakhs of years ago."Internet and satellite communication had existed in the days of Mahabharata. How could Sanjaya (the charioteer of King Dhritarashtra) give a detailed account and description to the blind king about the battle of Kurukshetra? It means internet was there, the satellites and that technology was there in this country at that time," he said. The BJP leader said that the ...

New system to spot fake Facebook, Twitter accounts

Scientists have developed a new algorithm that can spot fake accounts on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The method is based on the assumption that fake accounts tend to establish improbable links to other users in the networks, according to the study in published in the journal Social Network Analysis and Mining. "With recent disturbing news about failures to safeguard user privacy, and targeted use of social media by Russia to influence elections, rooting out fake users has never been of greater importance," said Dima Kagan, lead researcher from Ben-Gurion University in Israel. "We tested our algorithm on simulated and real-world data sets on 10 different social networks and it performed well on both," Kagan said. The algorithm consists of two main iterations based on machine-learning algorithms. The first constructs a link prediction classifier that can estimate, with high accuracy, the probability of a link existing between two users. The second iteration ...

World's largest superconducting camera can spot nearby exoplanets

Scientists have developed the world's largest superconducting camera that can spot planets around stars near our solar system. Distinguishing that planet's light from its star can be problematic, researchers said. The team from California Institute of Technology and Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the US created a device named DARKNESS (the DARK-speckle Near-infrared Energy-resolved Superconducting Spectrophotometer), the first 10,000-pixel integral field spectrograph designed to overcome the limitations of traditional semiconductor detectors. It employs Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors that, in conjunction with a large telescope and an adaptive optics system, enable direct imaging of planets around nearby stars. "Taking a picture of an exoplanet is extremely challenging because the star is much brighter than the planet, and the planet is very close to the star," said Benjamin Mazin, from University of California, Santa Barbara in the US. DARKNESS is an attempt to overcome some of .

AI system can create road maps from aerial images

MIT scientists have developed an artificial intelligence system that can automatically trace out roads from aerial images of a city. Mapping roads for navigation apps can be tedious. Even after taking aerial images, companies like Google still have to spend many hours manually tracing out roads. As a result, vast majority of the more than 20 million miles of roads across the globe have not yet been mapped. Gaps in maps are a problem, particularly for systems being developed for self-driving cars. To address the issue, researchers have created RoadTracer, an automated method to build road maps that's 45 percent more accurate than existing approaches. Using data from aerial images, the team says that RoadTracer is not just more accurate, but more cost-effective than current approaches. "RoadTracer is well-suited to map areas of the world where maps are frequently out of date, which includes both places with lower population and areas where there's frequent construction," said Mohammad ..

Junk food TV ads more frequent during kids's peak viewing times

Junk food advertisements are shown more frequently on TV at during children's peak viewing times, according to a study. The research also showed that children were exposed to twice as much unhealthy food advertising as healthy food advertising. Researchers from University of Adelaide in Australia found that children would view more than 800 junk food ads each year, if they watched 80 minutes of television per day. By building a TV monitoring system, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, researchers were able to capture an entire year's worth of television and ads from one free-to-air commercial TV network in South Australia. "This is the most robust data we've seen anywhere. It is the largest dataset ever used by health researchers for examining food advertising in Australia, and probably the world," said Lisa Smithers, associate professor at University of Adelaide. "Most research in this area is based on only a few days of data, and there are no Australian studies taking
