Trump repeats claim India, Pakistan 'made peace' after trade threat

US President Donald Trump has said that India and Pakistan "made peace" in May after he threatened the two nuclear-armed neighbours to snap trade deals with them if they continued their military conflict, a claim he has repeated several times since then. In eight months I ended eight wars, including Kosovo and Serbia, and Congo and Rwanda, that were going on for a long time... Pakistan and India, Trump said in his address at the America Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday. You know, I was in the midst of a trade deal with both of them (India and Pakistan), and then I read on the front page of a certain newspaper... I heard they were going to war. Seven planes were shot down, and the eighth was really badly wounded... Eight planes were shot down essentially," Trump said. He added, I said, this is war, and they are going at it. And they are two nuclear nations. I said, I'm not going to make any trade deals with you guys unless you agree to peace'. "The two nations said 'No way. This

Mamdani announces veteran transition team for ambitious NYC agenda

Fresh off his historic victory in New York City's mayoral election, Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday announced a slate of seasoned officials to help lead his transition to City Hall, offering an early glimpse at how he intends to turn his ambitious campaign promises into reality. In the coming months, I and my team will build a City Hall capable of delivering on the promises of this campaign, Mamdani, a democratic socialist, said at his first news conference as mayor-elect. We will form an administration that is equal parts capable and compassionate, driven by integrity and willing to work just as hard as the millions of New Yorkers who call this city home. That transition team will include two former deputy mayors, Maria Torres-Springer and Melanie Hartzog; former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan; and Grace Bonilla, the head of United Way of New York City, a nonprofit focused on low-income residents. Political strategist Elana Leopold will serve as executive director of the ...

Trump pressures GOP senators to end govt shutdown, now the longest ever

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday lashed out at Senate Republicans to end the government shutdown, now the longest ever, blaming the record-breaking impasse for the party's defeat in closely-watched elections while Democrats emboldened by their off-year victories dug in for a fight. Trump, whose first term at the White House set the previous government shutdown record, said this one was a big factor, negative in Tuesday's races. He repeated his demands for Republicans to end the Senate filibuster as a way to reopen government -- something senators have refused to do. Buoyed by their electoral wins, the Democrats also hardened their resolve. The Democratic leaders said it's time for Trump to get serious about negotiating an end to the stalemate. They demanded he get off the sidelines and meet with the congressional leaders to resolve the problem of expiring healthcare subsidies that are central to the debate. The election results ought to send a much needed bolt of lightning to

Trump feels very positive about future of India-US ties: White House

US President Donald Trump feels "very positive and strongly" about the future of India-US relationship, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said. I think he feels very positive and strongly about it. As you know, he recently, a few weeks back, spoke to Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) directly when he celebrated Diwali in the Oval Office with many high-ranking Indian-American officials at the White House, Leavitt said on Tuesday during a press briefing in response to a question about the future of India-US ties. She also said that in Sergio Gor, the US has a great Ambassador to India who will represent Washington very well. The president and his trade team continue to be in very serious discussions with India with respect to that topic. So I know the president has great respect for Prime Minister Modi, and they speak pretty frequently, she said. Last month, Trump hosted a Diwali celebration in the Oval Office that was attended by Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra

FBI fires additional agents who participated in investigating Trump

The FBI has continued its personnel purge, forcing out additional agents and supervisors tied to the federal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 US presidential election. The latest firings took place despite efforts by Washington's top federal prosecutor to try to stop at least some of the terminations, people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The employees were told this week that they were being fired but those plans were paused after DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro raised concerns, according to two people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to publicly discuss personnel matters. The agents were then fired again on Tuesday, though it's not clear what prompted the about-face. The total number of fired agents was not immediately clear. The terminations are part of a broader personnel upheaval under the leadership of FBI Director Kash Patel, who has pushed out numerous senior officials and agents involved in ...

Trump admin faces deadline to decide on use of contingency funds for SNAP

President Donald Trump's administration faces deadlines on Monday to tell two federal judges whether it will comply with court orders that it continue to fund SNAP, the nation's biggest food aid programme, using contingency funds during the government shutdown. The US Department of Agriculture planned to freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (SNAP) starting November 1 because it said it could no longer keep funding it due to the shutdown. The programme serves about 1 in 8 Americans and is a major piece of the nation's social safety net and it costs about USD 8 billion per month nationally. The situation leaves millions with uncertainty about how they will feed themselves. Benefits will be delayed in November regardless of the outcome of the court cases because many beneficiaries have their cards recharged early in the month and the process of loading cards can take a week or more in many states. Trump cuts US refugee limit to 7,500, mostly white South Africans

The Trump administration is restricting the number of refugees it admits into the country to 7,500 and they will mostly be white South Africans, a dramatic drop after the US previously allowed in hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and persecution from around the world. The administration published the news Thursday in a notice on the Federal Registry. No reason was given for the numbers, which are a dramatic decrease from last year's ceiling set under the Biden administration of 125,000. The Associated Press previously reported that the administration was considering admitting as few as 7,500 refugees and mostly white South Africans. The memo said only that the admission of the 7,500 refugees during 2026 fiscal year was justified by humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest.

Marco Rubio visits US-led coordination centre in Israel amid Gaza ceasefire

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio toured a US-led coordination centre in southern Israel Friday, as the Trump administration pushed forward with plans to set up an international security force in Gaza and shore up a tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Rubio was the latest in a series of high-level US officials to visit the civilian military coordination centre and the country. US Vice President JD Vance was there earlier this week, where he announced its opening, and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, were also in Israel. Around 200 US troops are working alongside the Israeli military and delegations from other countries at the centre, planning the stabilisation and reconstruction of Gaza. On Friday, an AP reporter saw international personnel there with flags from Cyprus, Greece, France, Germany, Australia and Canada. Rubio had been expected to name a civilian coordinator who would work alongside a commander from the US Central Command, bu

Tech leaders, mayor changed mind about using troops in San Francisco: Trump

President Donald Trump was geared up for a show of federal force in San Francisco, a city he's blasted as everything wrong with liberal governance. Then conversations with some of the Bay Area's most prominent tech leaders and the mayor changed his mind. I got a great call from some incredible people, some friends of mine, very successful people, Trump told reporters Thursday at the White House, specifically referencing Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, one of the world's most valuable tech companies, and Marc Benioff, CEO of software company Salesforce. He said they told him San Francisco was working hard to reduce crime. So we are holding off that surge, everybody. And we're going to let them see if they can do it, Trump said. He said he could change his mind if it doesn't work out. Trump said the increased federal force had been planned for Saturday. He didn't specify whether he was just referring to National Guard troops, which he had threatened to send in, or if he would also ha

Trump names new Army vice chief with current general just 2 years into role

President Donald Trump has nominated Lt Gen Christopher LaNeve to serve as the Army's second-highest-ranking officer, according to congressional records. Gen James Mingus is currently vice chief of staff and has not publicly said he plans to step aside. He has been in the job less than two years, and it is typically a tenure that lasts at least three years. The move, which was posted in congressional records on Monday, is the latest in a series of surprise and unexplained firings, reassignments and promotions that have been transforming the senior ranks of the military under Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. Officials in the Army and Hegseth's office would not offer any details on Mingus' apparent ouster and the effort to promote LaNeve, who is now Hegseth's top military aide. Maj Peter Sulzona, a spokesman for Mingus, told The Associated Press by email that he would not comment on pending nominations but that Mingus will continue to execute the duties and responsibilities
