Q4 earnings, tariff moves, FII trading likely to drive markets this week

Trading sentiment in the equity market will largely be driven by domestic corporate quarterly earnings, any update related to US tariffs and foreign fund movements this week, analysts said. Investors would also focus on world market trends, movement of global oil benchmark Brent crude and the rupee-dollar trend for further cues, experts noted. "This week, all eyes will be on the earnings reports of companies like HCL Technologies, Axis Bank, Hindustan Unilever, and Maruti. Globally, any updates related to tariffs and their potential impact on world markets will remain in focus," Ajit Mishra SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said. Stocks of India's second-largest IT company Infosys will remain in focus on Monday after the firm reported an 11.7 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 7,033 crore for the March quarter, mainly on account of compensation to employees, and acquisitions during the reported period. "This week, we expect gradual up-move to continue in the Indi

Easing trade barriers to aid Canada more than US tariffs hurt, says Carney

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday eliminating trade barriers within Canada would benefit Canadians far more than US President Donald Trump can ever take away with his trade war as he made his case to retain power at the last debate ahead of the April 28 vote. Carney has set a goal of free trade within the country's 10 provinces and three territories by July 1. Canada has long had interprovincial trade barriers. "We can give ourselves far more than Donald Trump can ever take away," Carney said We can have one economy. This is within our grasp. Carney said the relationship Canada has had with the US for the past 40 years has fundamentally changed because of Trump's tariffs. If reelected Carney plans to immediately enter into trade walks with the Trump administration. We are facing the biggest crisis of our lifetimes. Donald Trump is trying to fundamentally change the world economy, the trading system, but really is he's trying to break us so the US can own us. They want our la

US tariffs to weaken global economy, trigger inflation, not recession: IMF

Surging US tariffs will weaken the global economy and push up inflation this year, according to projections to be released next week by the International Monetary Fund. The IMF's Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, said Thursday that the Trump administration's sharp increases in duties have caused global uncertainty to spike. The import taxes will slow global growth, but not cause a worldwide recession, she added. The details of the IMF's outlook will be issued Tuesday. The world economy's resilience is being tested by the reboot of the global trading system that threatens to cause turbulence in financial markets, Georgieva said. That turbulence has been playing out in financial markets for weeks now, especially on Wall Street, which has experienced wild swings from day-to-day and often times even hour-to-hour. The IMF chief also echoed some Trump administration concerns. She called on countries to reduce their tariffs and lower other barriers to trade, a process that she said

In 'no rush' to end tariffs, says Trump in talks with Italy's Meloni

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is in no rush to reach any trade deals because of the revenues his tariffs are generating, but he suggested while meeting with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni that it would be easy to find an agreement with the European Union and others. Trump played down the likelihood of an accelerated timeline to wrap up deals, saying any agreements would come at a certain point. We're in no rush, said Trump, hinting that he has leverage because other countries want access to US consumers. Meloni's meeting with Trump is testing her mettle as a bridge between the EU and the United States. She is the first European leader to have face-to-face talks with the president since he announced and then partially suspended 20 per cent tariffs on European exports. Meloni secured the meeting as Italy's leader, but she also has, in a sense, been knighted to represent the EU at a critical juncture in the fast-evolving trade war that has stoked recession fears.
