US, British leaders discuss Ukraine's push to ease weapons restrictions

US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are meeting Friday amid an intensified push by Ukraine to loosen restrictions on using weapons provided by the US and Britain to strike Russia. The talks come amid signs that the White House could be moving toward a shift in its policy. Ukrainian officials renewed their pleas to use Western-provided long-range missiles against targets deeper inside Russia during this week's visit to Kyiv by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Minister David Lammy. Blinken said he had no doubt that Biden and Starmer would discuss the matter during their visit, noting the US has adapted and will adjust as necessary as Russia's battlefield strategy has changed. The language is similar to what Blinken said in May, shortly before the US allowed Ukraine to use American-provided weapons just inside Russian territory. The distance has been largely limited to cross-border targets deemed a direct threat out of concerns about ...

US House clears bipartisan package of bills to counter China's influence

The US House this week approved a sweeping package of bills to counter China's influence, shoring up a largely bipartisan push to ensure America comes out ahead in the competition between the world's superpowers. The efforts would ban Chinese-made drones, limit China-linked biotech companies from access to the U.S. market, strengthen sanctions and deepen ties with Asian countries. The campaign to target Beijing this week shows how curbing China's power has emerged as a rare issue of political consensus. But some measures did pass along party lines, with Republicans arguing the need to protect national security when it comes to everything from education to farmland, and Democrats raising concerns about discrimination. The advocacy group Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote also warned about overly broad anti-China rhetoric. One contentious measure seeks to revive a Trump-era program to root out Beijing's spying in American universities and institutes. The bills all still need ...

Anti-war protesters clash with cops outside Australian weapons convention

Anti-war protesters clashed with police Wednesday outside a military arms convention in the Australian city of Melbourne. Protesters hurled bottles, rocks and horse manure, a police statement said. Protesters had also sprayed officers with liquid irritants, some of which had been identified as acid, police said. Police retaliated with pepper spray, flash distraction devices and by foam baton rounds. These rounds are designed to inflict pain without penetrating skin. At least 24 officers required medical treatment. Police had arrested 33 protesters for offenses including assault, arson and blocking roadways. Victoria Police is appalled at the behavior of some of the protesters, the statement said, referring to the Victoria state force. Around 1,800 police officers have been deployed to a Melbourne convention center where the Land Forces International Land Defense Exposition is taking place through Friday. US commemorates 9/11 attacks with victims in focus, but politics in view

The US is remembering the lives taken and those reshaped by 9/11, marking an anniversary laced this year with presidential campaign politics. Sept 11 the date when hijacked plane attacks killed nearly 3,000 people in 2001 falls in the thick of the presidential election season every four years, and it comes at an especially pointed moment this time. Fresh off their first-ever debate Tuesday night, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are both expected to attend 9/11 observances at the World Trade Center in New York and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania. Then-senators and presidential campaign rivals John McCain and Barack Obama made a visible effort to put politics aside on the 2008 anniversary. They visited ground zero together to pay their respects and lay flowers in a reflecting pool at what was then still a pit. It's not yet clear whether Harris and Trump even will cross paths. If they do, it would be an extraordinary encounter at a somb

We will think of scrapping reservation when India is a fair place: Rahul

The Congress Party will think of scrapping reservations when India is a fair place, which is not the case right now, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition has said. Gandhi made these remarks while talking to students at the prestigious Georgetown University. We will think of scrapping reservations when India is a fair place. And India is not a fair place, Gandhi told students at the university here in response to a question on reservation and how long it would continue. When you look at the financial numbers, then tribals get 10 paise out of 100 rupees; Dalits get 5 rupees out of 100 rupees, and OBCs get a similar number. The fact of the matter is that they're not getting participation," Gandhi said. "The problem is that 90 per cent of India is not able to play. Go through the list of every single business leader in India. I've done it. Show me the tribal name. Show me the Dalit name. Show me the OBC name. Out of the top 200, I think there's one OBC. They're 50 per cent of India. But
