UP govt declares 4 villages near Nepal border as revenue villages

The Uttar Pradesh government declared four villages located near the Nepal border in the district as revenue villages, an official said on Sunday. District Magistrate of Bahraich, Dinesh Chandra Singh said the decision was taken before the announcement of the general elections to the UP Legislative Assembly. These four villages are Bhavanipur, Tedhia, Dhakia and Bichhia located in Mihinpurwa tehsil of the district. All these villages are Vantangiya villages. The Vantangiya' community comprises people brought from Myanmar during the colonial rule to plant trees. A revenue village is a small administrative region with defined borders. One revenue village may contain many hamlets. A village administrative officer is the head officer of a revenue village. Singh said the decision in this regard was taken on January 3 at a meeting presided over by the chief secretary, and the letter was received on January 8. Elections in five states from Feb 10-March 7; results on March 10: EC

Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa will be held between February 10 and March 7 in seven phases, the Election Commission announced on Saturday. The counting of votes will be held on March 10. With the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic unfolding, the commission has set new protocols to ensure "Covid safe" elections to 690 assembly seats across the five states, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra told reporters here. He was flanked by election commissioners Rajiv Kumar and Anup Chandra Pandey. In Uttar Pradesh, elections will be held in 403 assembly seats in seven phases from February 10 to March 7. Elections in 60 constituencies of Manipur will held in two phases on February 27 and March 3, while polling in Goa (40 seats), Punjab (117 seats) and Uttarakhand (70 seats) will be held on February 14. The Model Code of Conduct has come into effect in the five states with the announcement of elections.

Over 14 lakh names of people in18-19 age group added in UP electoral roll

Over 14.66 lakh voters in the age group of 18-19 years will be exercising their franchise for the first time in this year's Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, officials said on Wednesday. A total of 52,80,882 voters' names have been added during revision of electoral rolls. The figure comprises 23,92,258 men, 28,86,988 women and 1,636 transgenders, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ajay Shukla said, while releasing the final electoral rolls here. A total of 14,66,470 names were added in the age group of 18-19 which comprises 27.76 per cent of the total names added, he said. At present, the total number of voters in the 18-19 age group in the electoral roll is 19,89,902 10,62,410 men, 9,26,945 women and 547 transgenders. A total of 21,40,278 voters' names of different categories have been deleted during this revision.
