Chinese aggression another reason to strengthen India-US ties: US lawmakers

The latest Chinese aggression against India is yet another reminder of why a strong Indo-US security partnership is crucial to their national security, top American lawmakers have said. The Chinese and Indian troops were engaged in a fresh clash in Yangtse area of Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang sector on December 9, in first such major flare-up after the deadly hand-to-hand combat in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades. "China's most recent aggression in Arunachal Pradesh is yet another reminder of why a strong security partnership with India is crucial to the national security of the United States and our allies, the India Caucus Co-Chairs said in a statement. "This event marks yet another threat of the People's Republic of China to the Indian territory, including China's premeditated aggression on the Line of Actual Control in 2020 which saw the death of approximately 20 Indian troops, it said. Donald Trump urged to delay 2024 launch after GOP's uneven election

It was supposed to be a red wave that former President Donald Trump could triumphantly ride to the Republican nomination as he prepares to launch another White House run. Instead, Tuesday night's disappointing results for the GOP are raising new questions about Trump's appeal and the future of a party that has fully embraced him, seemingly at its peril, while at the same time giving new momentum to his most potent potential rival. Indeed, some allies were calling on Trump to delay his planned announcement next week, saying the party's full focus needs to be on Georgia, where Trump-backed football great Herschel Walker's effort to unseat Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock is headed to a runoff that could determine control of the Senate once again. I'll be advising him that he move his announcement until after the Georgia runoff, said former Trump adviser Jason Miller, who spent the night with the former president at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. Georgia needs to be the focus of every

US mortgage rates rise 6% for first time since 2008 housing crash

Average long-term US mortgage rates climbed over 6 per cent this week for the first time since the housing crash of 2008, threatening to sideline even more home buyers from a rapidly cooling housing market. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac reported Thursday that the 30-year rate rose to 6.02 per cent from 5.89 per cent last week. The long-term average rate has more than doubled since a year ago and is the highest it's been since November of 2008, just after the housing market collapse triggered the Great Recession. One year ago, the rate stood at 2.86 per cent. Rising interest rates in part a result of the Federal Reserve's aggressive push to tamp down inflation have cooled off a housing market that has been hot for years. Many potential home buyers are getting pushed out of the market as the higher rates have added hundreds of dollars to monthly mortgage payments. Sales of existing homes in the US have fallen for six straight months, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Donald Trump signals he might run for US presidential election 2024

Donald Trump has strongly indicated that he might run for the 2024 US presidential election, claiming that "everyone" wants him to contest the polls once again, a decision he said will make a "couple of people unhappy." The 76-year-old Republican leader who has still not conceded defeat in the 2020 US presidential election to his Democratic Party rival Joe Biden, asserted that "we didn't lose." In an interview to NDTV news channel at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, the former president said, "Everyone wants me to run, I'm leading in the polls...I'll make a decision in the very near future, I suspect. And I think that a lot of people are going to be very happy." "I think so. A lot of people will be (happy); and a couple of people will be unhappy," he said without naming those who won't be pleased with his decision to seek another term in the White House in 2024. While not acknowledging Biden's win and his inauguration as the 46th US President in January 2021,

Issued highest number of student visas to Indians in 2022, says US Embassy

The United States has issued a record of 82,000 student visas to Indians in 2022, highest than any country, the US Embassy in India has said. "We are happy to see so many students were able to receive visas and reach their universities after the delays caused in previous years by the COVID-19 pandemic. We issued over 82,000 student visas this summer alone, more than in any previous year. "This shows that the United States remains for most Indian families the most sought-after country for higher education," Patricia Lacina, Charge d'affaires of US Embassy in India said. "It also highlights the important contributions Indian students make to both our countries as they build life-long connections with American peers to maintain and grow international partnerships, working collectively to address current and future global challenges," Lacina added. Indian students comprise nearly 20 per cent of all international students studying in the United States, with the Open Doors report in 2021

Joe Biden to channel Kennedy in his push for a cancer 'moonshot'

US President Joe Biden next week will highlight his plans for drastically reducing cancer deaths and boosting treatments for the disease in what he has called this generation's moonshot", the White House announced on Wednesday. Biden's speech at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston on Monday will come on the 60th anniversary of his predecessor's speech outlining his vision for putting the first man on the moon. The White House said Biden will outline what his administration is doing to end cancer as we know it". The issue is personal for Biden, whose son Beau Biden died in 2015 of brain cancer. Biden launched the cancer moonshot the following year when serving as President Barack Obama's vice president. In February, Biden, a Democrat, set more ambitious goals for the project, including cutting the rate of cancer deaths in half in the coming 25 years and improving treatments and quality of life for those with cancer and their caregivers.
